The R1 Criterion is the Director's Cut; there's quite a bit of "new" stuff in there, invariably involving more blood and guts. Very good it is too (although non-anamorphic).

This is in its original 1.66:1 uncropped ratio, full violence, no (non-?)seamless branching as its the one version. See this thread (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=48236) for some queries about the R2 version.

The bare-bones R1 isn't the Director's cut no.

It IS anamorphic and in 5.1, but I wouldn't recommend buying it (however cheap you find it) as the English track sounds really compressed and has sadly been botched-up somewhere along the line. No doubt there'll be a trilogy set for the U.S later this year (although the R2 set is out in Feb).
