Justin or anyone else,

As someone who has got his hands on - literally - the various Marantz amps in the SR range, does the build quality improve as the price increases, as well as the functions and facilities? They all look very similar...

The actual build quality is about the same on each model, but internally they change a little as you go up the range, with better quality components and larger PSUs. Plus the remotes get better:)

Thanks

Thanks for that. I've just spent my lunch break down at Curry's fiddling with a Yamaha 620 and Sony 1070 to see what they feel like when you are prodding and switching. Then I crossed the retail park to Courts and found an old Sony 735D DVD player - now you're talking! You could drive a Shogun over it. I know the big manufacturers are striving to build to a price point and that inevitably means corners are cut, but it's not just about sound/picture quality. You obviously rate Marantz for sound, but do they cut the mustard compared to Denon, Yam, etc when it comes to build quality?

Richard,

If anything the build quality of Marantz is better then rival brands for the money, with the exception of Denon and Nad / Rotel. Certinlsy much better built then the sony amps, and the cheaper yams like RXV420 (if comparing against a SR4200 for example). I`d suggest you nip to a local hifi shop and have a look for yourself to help you decide rather then my opinions :)

If you compare similarly specced Marantz and Denon AV amps, you tend to find the Denons are quite a bit heavier. The Denon AVR2802 is about 10kg heavier than the Marantz SR6200 for example. Perhaps Denon have taken the EC ruling on weights and measures too literally and are pricing their amps per kilo?

What you might make from that, I don't know ...

Are you on crack Dave?

:)

I've got the specs of the 2802 and 7200 (£650 and £600 respectively, so comparable kit) - the Denon 2802 is listed at 11.5kg, whilst the Marantz SR7200 weighs in at a beefy 14.9kg....the SR6200 itself is listed at 14.8kg.

These two are in the same price bracket, but specification wise they are miles apart. You need to do more than compare prices to determine the quality of a product!

Interesting - having demo'd and compared the specs at length - I'd say they were very similar.

I would say the spec on those 2 is about as close a comparison as you can get between 2 different brands.

As would I Jon - here they are:

Marantz SR7200:

105w to each channel @ 8ohms
Frequency Range – 20Hz – 20KHz (0.05% THD)

Video Inputs

Component x 2
S-Video x 5
Composite x 5

Video Outputs

Component x 1
S-Video x 3
Composite x 3

Audio Inputs

Analogue x 8
7 Channel Analogue Inputs – 1 set
Optical x 2
Coaxial x 2

Audio Outputs

Analogue Pre-Outs x 8
Optical x 1
Coaxial x 1

----------------------------------------------------

Denon 2802

90w to each channel @ 8ohms
Frequency Range – 20Hz – 20KHz (0.05% THD)

Video Inputs

Component x 2
S-Video x 5
Composite x 5

Video Outputs

Component x 1
S-Video x 3
Composite x 3

Audio Inputs

Analogue x 9
6 Channel Analogue Inputs – 1 set
Optical x 3
Coaxial x 1

Audio Outputs

Analogue Pre-Outs x 8
Optical x 1

Pretty equal I'd say

Yeap, have to agree with Jon :) Denon and Marantz amps / receivers are usually closly matched these days. Be nice to see what the new Yamahas have to offer shortly....
