View Full Version : Best year for games ever? Where's the time/money?

I realised today that the second half of this year sees the release of a ridiculous amount of games that I am interested in. Could this possibly be the best year on record for potential games releases?

I'm a little worried, because I figured out how much I could be spending just on games in the coming months. To break it down, these are the games that have piqued my interest:

PC
Crysis, Bioshock

DS
Jam Sessions, Zelda Phantom Hourglass, Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings

Xbox 360
Mass Effect, Rock Band, Guitar Hero 3, Assassin's Creed, Half-Life 2 Orange Box, Halo 3, Grand Theft Auto 4, The Simpsons game, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Star Wars Lego Complete Saga, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Now, the majority of these games are being released in the months towards the end of this year. Let's say, for arguments sake, the PC and DS games are £30 each, and the 360 games are £40 each (with Rock Band maybe being £100).

That's like, around £700 I'm planning to spend on games. Over the course of a few months. And there's probably other ones I've forgotten about.

This has never happened to me before.

Anyone else in a similar situation?

Well I wouldn't buy Blue Dragon for a start based on the demo, I just saved you £40 :D

Anyone else in a similar situation?
:help:

There's a ridiculous amount of games that i'm interested in that are out between now and the end of the year. Even narrowing that list to the ones i know i'll almost certainly purchase, it's still large:

PS3
Heavenly Sword, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Singstar, Burnout Paradise, PES 7 (brother has a ps3 and not a 360 - plus controller preference!), Lair, Eye of Judgement (Eyetoy)

PS3 PSN
Warhawk, Wipeout HD, Echochrome, Everyday Shooter, Boo Boo Cocorecco! (Loco Roco 2), Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Socom Confrontation

360
Bioshock, Beautiful Katamari

Wii
Super Mario Galaxy

DS
Elite Beat Agents

PSP
Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars

PC
Football Manager 2008

Undecided Formats
Rock Star, Guitar Hero 3, Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty 4

And then of course theres Time Crisis 3, Halo, GTA, Zelda, Haze, UT3, Sega Rally, Ratchet & Clank, Stranglehold and so on and so on that could get purchased to. I can't even remember some of the other Wii/DS titles that i'm interested in. There's so much across all formats now, it's just getting silly.

Spread the releases out a bit, please!!

so far I think it's been a bit poor to be honest, there's been a load of good releases at once and then nothing for a few months. I think once the PS3 picks up then it will become more steady.

Blue Dragon will be ******* mint.

Blue Dragon gets boring very quickly tbh.

Fable 2 (2008?)
Assassin's Creed
PGR4
Mass Effect!!!
HL2: Orange Box

Blue Dragon gets boring very quickly tbh.

Depends what you like I guess? Right up my street, so I'm in no doubt I'll not be bored any time soon when playing it...

Where's the TFC2 love? Or has it been pushed to '08...

But yea, hella expensive final 6 months coming up, i'm not even gonna bother listing , cos its basically the same as Mr M0by

What's TFC2?

Reading this thread makes my credit card shudder!

Certainly a lot of good games to come this year. Personally looking forward to GTA IV, PES 2008, Zelda on the DS.

19-07-2007, 20:01
TFC2 = Team Fortress 2? That's part of the Half-Life Orange Box, which is definitely on my list.

ShakeyJake
19-07-2007, 20:02
I hope it's more of a Team Fortress sequel than Team Fortress Classic, TFC ruined a perfectly good game.

I'm so glad I'm a student now and have time to play these games :)

But no money to buy them :(

My 360 is my main gaming machine with the DS a close 2nd. My PS2 is gathering dust...tho I still have Resident Evil 4 to play on it and I want both GOW games.

It's a good time to be a gamer  ....even at my advancing years

Is that (TFC2) just an online thing?

Doesn't float my boat that kind of nonsense :)

Reading this thread makes me realise how much I have lost touch with gaming. I've hardly heard of any of them

i was only thinking this the other day, august end onwards looks stupid.

i can forsee the girlfriend get chopped in, a few very late nights and a few sick days.

so wish they would spread them out through the year but that is'nt going to happen unless we have Christmas 2 end of june!

ShakeyJake

I desperately want a HDTV before GTA4 but with all these games I'm going to find that very difficult :D

RobDickinson
19-07-2007, 21:17
Not sure how I'm going to survive the second half of 2007, especialy as come September/October I'll be back to surfing again.

Oh and who missed off Speedball II, possibly the best sports game of all time?

stormywhether
19-07-2007, 21:17
who on earth has the TIME to play all these games? Is it just me being realistic here?

I sound like my dad.

It's time.

Mr M0by
19-07-2007, 21:39
who on earth has the TIME to play all these games? Is it just me being realistic here?

Nowhere near enough time to ever complete a few of them, let alone them all. That's why i won't be buying GTA/Mass Effect/Zelda etc... i'm still plowing through Okami, about an hour and a half a week!

sleep4ever
19-07-2007, 21:51
But we have had a huge lull in anything decent coming out

The last game I bought was Crackdown and have been waiting ever since

There have been similar times in past years, and then in December I was buying 3 or so games a week

RobDickinson
19-07-2007, 21:55
So you missed Overlord!!!

cluderi
19-07-2007, 22:29
Finished the Darkness, I've nearly finished Rainbow Six Vegas and I'm rushing through Overlord as fast as I can so I get finished in time for Bioshock.

After that I've no idea how I'm going to find the time or money to buy all the games I want from now until Christmas.

Just on the 360 I want

Bioshock
GTA IV
Halo 3
Call of Duty 4
Oblivion - Game of the year edition (never got this the first time out)
Stranglehold
HL2 Orange box
Lost Oddessey
Eternal Sonata
Mass Effect
Star Wars - Force Unleashed

Last I checked these were all Q3/Q4 2007 releases and there are more I want in Q1/2008.

charlie angel
20-07-2007, 08:37
Zelda Phantom Hourglass - DS
Mass Effect - 360
Metroid Prime Corruption - Wii
Guitar Hero 3 - multi
Super Mario Galaxy - Wii
Smash Bros Brawl - Wii

That's about all I want for the rest of the year - if Heavenly Sword is good, then that too.

KRW
20-07-2007, 08:40
There are too many games out and I've come to the conclusion that I'm never going to load up Oblivion etc while stuff just keeps on getting released. I'm playing The Darkness, Forza and R6Vegas at the moment. Only just finished GRAW.

And i know once GTA4 comes out, that'll be the only thing played for weeks.

mikegray

PC:
Hellgate
UT3
Crysis

Xbox360
Assassin's Creed
PGR4
Burnout
Bioshock
Mass Effect
COD4
GTA IV
Virtua Fighter
Halo 3
Tony Hawks
Skate
Guitar Hero
Rock Band

DS:
Zelda
FF Revenant Wings

Wii:
Metroid
Mario

That's an insane line up for the next 6 months of gaming. No chance I'll get round to play it all! Christ, I'll need a month or more just to get through Mass Effect with the amount of gaming time I get these days.

KRW
20-07-2007, 09:40
I forgot about COD4 and didnt know anything about Star Wars Force Unleashed. :(

From the end of August onwards it's going to be a nightmare to keep up with the new releases, even for me if I just stick with the 360. The timing sucks as the US TV season starts in September & i'll have to juggle watching that & gameplaying. The only good thing is that i'll have no time to even consider buying a PS3, even if the price drops.

Essential 360 purchases...

Bioshock
Blue Dragon
Tiger Woods '08
Stranglehold
PGR4
Halo 3
Eternal Sonata
Mercenaries 2
Half Life: The Orange Box
GTA 4
Guitar Hero 3
Call of Duty 4
Assassin's Creed
Mass Effect
Burnout Paradise
Rock Band

For me

Bioshock
PGR4
The Simpsons Game
Assassin's Creed
PES7
Halo 3
GH3

All on 360

I'm pretty good at waiting for reviews for games before I buy them so the only definites for me are COD4 and Halo 3.

I'm also good at finishing games, then trading in for new ones so I don't spend that much really. I only keep 5 or 6 games at a time.

Only games I'm looking forward to for the rest of the year are;

Football Manager 2008
GTA IV
Pro Evo 7

I've been on the verge of upgrading my PC for about 12 months now, waiting for that killer game that my current PC won't handle, but I just haven't fancied it.

How much of a benefit to FM 2008 would a Quad Core rig be?

Mr Nice
20-07-2007, 22:10
Hadn't realised that Bioshock finally has a release date, just in time for my traditional triannual PC upgrade, so that's nice too.

I've been surprised that there's been so many already, the excellent Darkness & the oh-so fun Overlord have managed to drag me away from GOW, not too sure about some of the upcoming titles, but looking forward to
Stranglehold
Halo 3
BioShock (although I have a feeling I might not like it, not sure why) Assassin's Creed
Splinter Cell: Conviction (2 wishes, 1: It'll be out this year, 2: It won't be as badly realised as the last one)
GTA IV (finally a proper sequel to GTA III and not an overhaul with bits tacked on)
Chronicles of Riddick (sure it's a rehashed last gen game, but what an incredible looking gam it was, one of Xbox's finest ever)

Sure there'll be more I've not listed, pretty sure I'll get HL2, but only if it really seems worthwhile....enjoyed the Xbox conversion, but it seemed lacking at times. I'd also love to see Conker's Bad Fur Day released on download (sizeable game I know) & the original uncensored N64 version at that(unless it already has, in which case I'm going off to hide).

Slender

I'm planning to buy (all for XBOX 360):
-Bioshock
-Rock Band (with all instruments)
-Guitar Hero 3
-Mercenaries 2
-Mass Effect
-GTA IV
-Stranglehold
-Burnout Paradise
-Call of Duty IV
-Assassin's Creed

And I'm waiting for reviews to decide on the following games:
-Two Worlds
-Splinter Cell Conviction
-Clive Barker's Jericho
-Blacksite: Area 51
-Ace Combat 6
-Kane and Lynch
-Conan (single player game)

It's surely going to be an expensive period for me. :) It's been years since there have been this many games I'm interested in. Last time was 1998 with Half Life, Thief and Grim Fandango among others.

Mr M0by
21-07-2007, 14:26
I forgot about the new Civ expansion pack out this month and PGR4 plus i'll probably pick up a DS/PSP game or two for my holiday in September.... so about 20 games in the next 5 and a half months and then the PSN/XBL stuff on top.

edit: that's a lot of money! (Thank heavens for staff discount).

Alan Wake

Don't forget Left4Dead - looking very promising.

I'm still trying to catch up with all the games on the shelf, barely started Crackdown/GRAW/LP/PGR3/Resi4Wii, need to return to GOW to finish off, chugging through hard on GHII and desparately trying to prevent purchases of Darkness/Overlord and others until these are done. This year is looking to be very expensive, but the lack of time is a real killer :(

Spooky_uk
21-07-2007, 20:11
its expensive being a gamer right now (esp if multiple systems), and I really cannot afford them all - so I keep track of my wants list via gamestracker and then when they drop in price snap them up.

I am not in a massive hurry to get all titles straight away, the odd few yes but more than happy to wait however long until they become affordable. Prices do tumble after awhile anyway..

All starts next month, personally i will be picking up the following :-

Bioshock
Blue Dragon
Warhawk
Persona 3
Lair (depending on further reviews)
Metroid Prime 3

Of the games on that list that have come out or were out, i've passed on: Elite Beat Agents [DS] and Crazy Taxi Wars [PSP]. I won't be getting Lair now (Is anyone?!) and Beautiful Katamari isn't getting a PAL release (i've read it can be completed in 3 hours anyway!). I might pass on Eye of Judgement for a while to see if it comes down in price. I have however bought things that weren't on there:

Sega Rally [360], Orange Box [360] & Hotel Dusk [DS]

And there looks like i'll still get another 7-10 'boxed' games before the end of the year.

Wow, missed this thread originally. How can anyone say this is the best year ever? Maybe in recent years but there were more quality games released on the 16-bit platforms (inc Amiga) in a single year than several years on modern machines. IMHO anyway

Come the 2nd November I think the flood of games really starts, seems to be loads released next week and the following weeks
