Seriously its been number one for like 3 months yet I still havent heard it :D
I blame this fact on the demiss of TOTP which i used to regularly tune into even though the majority of chart stuff these days is pap.

Mr Majestik

I've heard it once.

Mrs M had Radio 1 on in the car. It didn't seem a bad pop ditty.

I'm sure if i regually listened to Radio 1 and had to listen to it 12 times a day fot the last 12 weeks i might have a diffrent view.

Phew I was probably 100% right in the opinion that I am not missing anything then but its just goes to show you how pointless the singles chart is these days, I wonder who is actually buying it?

Umbrella. Clue 1.
its been number one. Clue 2.

Work it out you clever people. ;)

I'm cooler than all of you and I've heard it

Which tells you 50% about me and 50% about the state/pointlessness of the charts these days

I think it's an alright pop song. But that's all it is, a pop song. Nothing more, nothing less. Plus, I just keep singing "Ella, ella, eh, eh, eh" to annoy the girlfriend whenever she's getting on my nerves. Works a charm ;)

Johnny Vodka
13-07-2007, 12:47
I hadn't heard it *much* until I went to Zante at the beginning of June, where it was played non-stop (practically) in the bars, etc. Guess what my least favourite song was by the time I got home?

Probably something by Fergie.

Nah, it gets on my tits, but so does most daytime radio stuff.

As soon as she starts injecting additional syllables in her robotic monotone (UM-Ber-ra-reLLA!) I want to engage in foot-teeth interface.

Bleucccch. Almost as annoying as that J. Lo song with the looped sax sample. De-ne-NAH-NAH! De-ne-NAH-NAH! De-ne-NAH-NAH! De-ne-NAH-NAH! De-ne-NAH-NAH!

I don't listen to any radio anymore (haven't done for 2 years now for some reason).
I didn't hear Umbrella until it had been No1 for about 5 weeks then thought "I'll check out the video on youtube". At first I hated it. Heard it again, it started to attach itself to my brain.
Heard it again, loved it. Weird how that can happen!
Had it on repeat all of last weekend. :help:
It's just a great pop song.
and I, er, like the sentiment of the song too.

OH, you cool indie kids sitting at home in your darkened rooms listening to German minimalist techno!

I'd agree, it's a song that's best heard sparingly, but unfortunately the mainstream radio industry seem intent on sticking it on maximum rotation - I bet people like Radiohead are absolutely fed up of hearing the tune.

And don't get me started about the various 're-e-e-e-mixes' that have come out with some buffoon rapping extremely badly over the top of the song.

Like this:

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/oObwv52OuOw"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/oObwv52OuOw" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

In conclusion - great pop song, given to artist who's not entirely liked in her own genre, which has been ruined by overplay - I was in our local Tesco's the other day, and they had the song on repeat - I bet that must have driven the workers near it absolutely bonkers.

I didn't think I would know it but I have heard this a few times on Radio 2 judging by the YouTube video. DJs often don't give credits nowadays so that's my excuse. I had no idea it had been number 1 at all, let alone setting a record for the decade!

The cynic in me thinks that if it was some whiteboy indie band setting a record for the decade, Radio 2 would be mentioning it a lot...but then that would be a reflection on its demographic/DJs as much as anything.

It's not as bad a song as I was expecting (given my general dislike of R'n'B) but I'd never knowingly heard it until now. Is this the same girl that did that 'One Thing' song that sounds exactly like 'Crazy in Love'?

Nope, that's Amerie.

Radio 2's about as indie as my arse. It's filled with the sort of people who think they deserve cred for playing Snow Patrol or Keane. ;)

Unfortunately that's such a vague statement I'm not sure what it implies. :D

Are you saying Snow Patrol / Keane aren't Indie...or that they like pop so much that's really them being edgy? I don't know Radio 2 much but when I last heard it it seemed to be like Radio 1 10 years ago.

Johnny Vodka
16-07-2007, 12:43
Snow Patrol / Keane are hardly cutting edge, but a 45 year old accountant might mistake them as such. ;)

Take Mark Radcliffe - he used to be good on radio 1 (especially at nights) and introduced me to some decent music at the time. If you look at the sort of stuff he plays now, it's far more conservative. And worst of all he seems to be happier now, or at least that's what he says.

Another good (or bad) example are Chris Coco's occasional, watered-down chill-out shows - nowhere near the breadth of stuff he used to play on The Blue Room.

Well, they could be classed as indie when they started out, but they're mainstream now - and that's the problem. Indie as a term died out years ago, it's been absorbed much more into the mainstream than people give it credit for.

A point well made by the last episode of 'Seven Ages of Rock'; those 'experimental independent bands' have grown up and put their dad's cloth cap and slippers on.

*sigh*

Due to the wondefull world of downloading singles sales are up again.

Only heard the song a few times and it's a perfectly good slice of R N B pop.

Dosen't deserve to be No1 for 10 weeks but it is better than Wet,Wet,Wet and Bryan Adam's efforts.

Depends, as Mr Majestik says this single also set some sort of record on the number of downloads it received in the first week - surpassing Gnarls Barkley - and that's what's driving sales, it's downloads and the constant remixes that are being released (the latest being a Seamus Haji dance remix).

Can't wait to see some of your jaws drop when you hear the new Girls Aloud single though...

It had to happen...

Rihanna has launched her own range of umbrellas, following the success of her song 'Umbrella'.

As previously reported, the singer scored the longest-running Number One single in decade after claiming a tenth week at the top of the chart with the track yesterday (July 22).

Now the singer has teamed up with clothes company Totes to bring out a collection of umbrellas.
