I'm after a new amp and have narrowed it down to these:

STR DB 1070
STR DB 930
STR DB 925
STR DB 870

Leaning towards the 930, but any feed back on any of these models would be great! Cheers all.

Tob mate, the 930 was replaced two years ago with the 940, which itself was replaced last year with the 1070. The 925 is obsolete too. :D

For the money you'll have to pay now for a 1070 £400+ there is pleny of other amps that offer more for the money. Marantz & Denon would be worth adding to your audition list.

I have a 1070 which (can you believe it) I got for 300 quid. For that price it is knockout with more woof and gadgets than bond and his women!

However, at 400+ I would not have been so eager, it is certainly not a 600 (rrp) pound amp.

I saw one on ebay or yahoo the other day for about 340-350 which if it stays at would be a reasonable buy. The 100watts on every channel and the very lively feel it has are my two favourites.

I've got a 930, used it for nearly 3 years and I'm very happy with it. I'm only using it for centre and rears, the front L+R pre-amp outputs go to my hi-fi setup. It was £450 when I bought it and definately worth it.

I've had a 925 for over 3 years and I've always been happy with it. I did have a 1070 for a short time but I preferred the sound of the 925. I know that goes against accepted wisdom but there you go. Perhaps I didn't give the 1070 enough time to run it in properly.
If you see a 925 cheap enough then snap it up. Its not been improved on by much in subsequent models.

Hi Baps, I know they are older models but I have been offered them very cheap if it is a Sony (don't ask!). Thinking on getting the 930 as it is supposedly the same as the 1070 but with an inferior remote.

Thanks for all your feedback, keep posting!

Anyone here replaced a 940 with a 1070?

Much difference?

Not at all mate. The 1070 has 6.1 channels for a start.

The 930 is very similar to it's replacement the 940, maybe that's what you were thinking of. You should be able to get a used 930 for under £200 and a 940 for not much more...

Hmmm, was thinking of the 870 I think Baps, was told they are quite similar. I have been offered a 930 at about £200, may well take it. Does it really matter it is an older model? 6.1 is irrelevant to me at the moment as I can hardly afford 5 peakers let alone 6!

Hmmm.....what to do?!

I have the 930, remote isn't great but a Pronto fixed that. Apart from below average stereo performance, its brilliant.

Yeah, I had the 830, essentially the same as a 930 but different remote and whilst the 2ch stereo is a bit crap, it was great for movies.

The 1070 is also crap for two channel music.I am sceptical about Sonys claim of 100w as well.I had a NAD which was on a different planet sound wise with supposedly less power. If you value stereo performance look else where!

i had a 930 for 2 years and was very happy with it - but as my listening has changed to 95%movies i got the 1070 at xmas for £400 new ( richer sounds price match) - the 1070 is an amp made for homecinema definitely - its layout and sound is made for homecinema and is very precise - probably too precise for music - if you listen to alot of music go for a marantz - the sony rocks in movie mode tho and has all the top end movie sounds ( DD-EX, DTS-ES matrix, DTS-ES discrete)- for movies i thought the sony won over the marantz - hope this helps :)

Cheers for all your replies. Don't think I can afford a 1070 so think I am going to get the 870. Cheers again peeps.

I have a Sony 840, which I've had for just over 2 years now. At the time it was the mid-priced amp. Nowerdays, it's successor the 1070, has better rivals for similar money.

This range doesn't sound good with 'lightweight' speakers & the plain stereo mode is OK(ish) - but no-where near as good as my good old Yamaha DSPA...

I'm more than happy with it & will suffice until my next bout of upgrades.....

How comes nearly everyone has slated the 1070 for it's poor 2 channel sound. I own one and am using it with Wharfedale 8.2 speakers. It sounds fine to me. Don't I know what I am listening for?!

Relax Craig - if you like it then it doesn't matter what most think.

IF, however, you had, say a Denon 2802 or Marantz 6200/7200 (or even the lower models) I'm confident you'd hear the difference. The Sony can sound a bit harsh and shrill with stereo, whilst the Denon/Marantz's are designed by manufacturers who place more emphasis on stereo sound. The 1070 is a fine amp for AV use, but for those using for stereo there are better for the same money.

Incidentally, I was quite happy with my old Yamaha A5 for stereo until I got my Marantz 7200 at the weekend - the difference is astounding.

The main diffs (for 2-ch) are:

Better separation
Better imaging
Basslines are easy to track, rather than just being there in the music
Vocals have a much lighter and airy quality
Soundtaging is markedly improved
Notes begin and end with precision, rather than hanging in the air.

But then my system is built for both AV and hi-fi, with music accounting for about 70% of its use. You may well be the other way round....

You're right - I have nothing to compare it to and it is in a bedroom so I will carry on being contented! :D
