I "Obtained" the new Stars album this morning then noticed it's available for download now

"Friends, fans and supporters of Stars... - July 10th, 2007

On September 25th, We will release Stars' fourth studio album, In Our Bedroom After War.

We love it and are excited and proud to be bringing it to the world.

We enlisted Joe Chiccarelli to mix the album. He finished in early June, passing the tapes along to Emily Lazar at the Lodge for mastering. Last Friday, July 6th, a final master was delivered to us.

Traditional music business practice says we are to begin sending out copies of this album now. We give advance copies to print publications in hopes of securing features that coincide with our September date. We meet with radio stations in hopes of securing airplay. etc, etc.

Inevitably someone will leak the album.

Throughout this process, the most important people in this value chain, the fans, are given only two options - wait until September 25th to legally purchase the new album or choose from a variety of sources and download the album for free, at any time.

We hope you'll choose to support the band, and choose to pay for their album. However we don't think it's fair you should have to wait until September 25th to do so.

We believe that the line between the media and the public is now completely grey.
What is the difference between a writer for a big glossy music magazine and a student writing about their favourite bands on their blog? What differentiates a commercial radio station from someone adding a song to their lastfm channel? or their myspace page?

As such, we are making the new Stars album available for legal download today, four days after it's completion. The CD and double vinyl versions of the album will still be released on our official release date, September 25th. We hope you will continue to support music retailers should a physical album in all it's packaged glory be your choice of format.

It's our hope that given a clear, legal alternative to downloading music for free, you will choose to support the creators.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
Sincerely,
Stars and Arts & Crafts "

I originally thought bit was a free download as on first listen it deserves to be but it's probably just available from the regular mp3 sellers rather than on the site.

I saw Stars tonight and was totally blown away - They were just superb :D

Apostle of Hustle were the support and were introduced by Torquil, they were a bit random but the crowd liked them sure enough.

Stars came out early, played late and were excellent. They played a good mix of songs as I was concerned that there would be enough from Set Yourself on Fire. The best past of the evening was after they finished Personal where there was a moment of silence that lasted for several seconds and the band clapped the crowd :D

I was disappointed by the show in Manchester, just couldn't hear the vocals properly... did you get the third support act too - he died on his arse in Manchester and knew it.

AFAIK no 3rd support last night. No problems with sound either :)

I was thinking about this last night - as soon as I saw the lamps - Feist, seriously how on earth is she playing RAH?!

I saw the London show at KOKO. Stunning, sold-out gig. Torquil's vocals were mixed way too low at first but the sound guy spotted it by about the 3rd song. Apostle of Hustle were grand and came on for Stars encores as well. The other support The Thurston Revival or something was ok -- it's a hard gig being on so early... they got enough applause that they probably felt ok ; )

It's always great to have new music but with an EP, it just gets going and then it ends. It's very 'Stars' though :notworthy

It looks as if a new album is comimg out next year, I hope they manage to squeeze in a few more UK dates before then.

Stars are going to start writing their new album in the next few days but have a slight problem:

hello!
stars are writing our new album in vancouver starting on wednesday and we find ourselves at the last minute bereft of the tools necessary to come up with some more sadomasochistic m.o.r. goodness for y'all. here's the pitch: we are looking for two really good guitars, a really good bass guitar, a two channel bass amp, two 2 channel guitar amps, a p.a., a microkorg and a moog odyssey type deal...should anyone of our beautiful western listeners own such things , and feels inclined to lend them to us from the 8th of april til the 18th, you will forever be on the vancouver guest list and receive one of Amy's beautiful smiles of gratitude. help! indie rock is scaring us! if you think you can lend us any of this and get it to our jamspace by wednesday morning, write us back and leave a contact. thanks in advance....bands...those funny little plans...that never seem quite right....

What's that all about?

In typical disorganised Stars fashion they're going to start writing their new album but have no instruments so they've asked their Myspace people to loan them the gear.

In the past they've asked for 'Jazz cigarettes' to be brought to shows :nono:

They did that at the last Manchester show.

They really have no shame do they?

They might need that Special K when the get the munchies.

Hmmm, just noticed this thread getting resurrected, and by a weird coincidence I picked up Amy Millan's album yesterday. Must confess I did this more off the back of the Haines/BSS connection and haven't heard much of Stars' stuff, but will try to rectify that before too long.

I've just bought that on Amazon, like 2 hours ago, great minds and all that!

Stars are great, probably more how Metric would have sounded if Emily hadn't banned Jimmy from singing anything other than backing vocals.

Their last 2 albums (Set Yourself On Fire and In Our Bedroom After The War) are the best for ones for me.

Indeed :) I was very surprised to find it at Bluewater shopping centre.

Will try to catch up with one/both of those. Arts & Crafts do have some really interesting artists, so I'm usually happy to give anything they put out a try.

Thanks for the link, Mike. I've been to both of the Newbury Comics shops in Boston - really good places to shop for music & DVD.
