Anyone else really looking forward to this ?

Basically it's a 4 player co-op game where you are trying to move from destination to destination whilst continuously fighting hordes of zombies.

It looks fantastic but I think that it will probably be unfortunately stamped on during the xmas period when it's due out.

Yea, remember seeing this on The 1Up Show a few weeks back, looked really good. Just waves and waves of fast moving zombies coming at you all the time, and the game judges how well you're doing, and throws more zombies at you if you're doing good, and slows the pace down a little if you're struggling.

looks like fun. Seems frantic at the best of times and the vomit on the screen is a...erm...nice touch!

I did not watch the video but the premise sounds similar to Zombie Master which is an HL2 mod.

If you are playing the human survivors, you have to work together to complete objectives to escape the zombies. If you are the titled zombie master, you can spawn different types of zombies and move them around RTS style.

This sounds like it's shaping up nicely:

Who among us doesn't love killing zombies? Maybe it's due to the fact that the walking dead used to be our friends and neighbors, but there's no denying that zombies make great videogame villains. Apparently Valve Software feels the same way, as its next game is shaping up to be one of the finest zombie titles in quite some time. We've done numerous previews of Left 4 Dead over the last few months, but we only ever saw the PC version of the game. That is, until now. We had a chance to spend some time with the Xbox 360 game at Valve's offices in Bellevue yesterday, days before it was to be shown at this weekend's Penny Arcade Expo.

Before we leapt into the fray and started blasting the undead, however, we sat down with David Speyrer, the game's Engineer and Co-Project Manager, to take a look at the matchmaking system. He explained that, since Left 4 Dead's action is so heavily focused on the cooperative experience, they wanted to make it easy for friends to find each other online, both on Xbox Live and Steam. Both versions of the game will feature a built-in friends list in the main menu that will tell you what sort of matches each of your buddies is currently in. If they have a free slot open in their match, you'll be able to hop right in at any time, replacing whichever character is bot-controlled at the time. You'll also have the option of partying up with your friends and searching for maps, as well as hopping online with a friend who's playing splitscreen with you, regardless of whether or not they have an Xbox Live Gold account.

If you don't see anyone online or don't feel like joining a match that's currently in progress, you can easily and quickly create your own match, setting it up to be available to the public or making it invite-only. You'll also be able to tweak a few other options, including the difficulty level (easy, normal, hard, and impossible are your choices) and the map you'd like to play on. It was explained that, since Valve will be running the servers for both the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game, they'll be able to track a bunch of different statistics that will make it easier to match similar players together. The amount of damage you take, the number of headshots you pull off, and the time it takes you to play through the levels are just a few of the determining factors here, although they said that they'll also have the ability to tweak the matchmaking system at any given time.

Left 4 Dead is comprised of four different and distinct campaigns, each of which is presented as a horror movie of sorts. The loading screens will feature movie posters complete with cheesy taglines like "Curing the Infection... One Bullet at a Time" and titles like "No Mercy" and "Blood Harvest". Writer and Co-Project Manager Chet Faliszek explained that the development team looked to movies like "Dawn of the Dead" for inspiration, so the movie theme could be viewed as an homage to the films of George Romero. Since Left 4 Dead has a built-in "director" (more on that later), this seems fitting.

Although we spent the majority of our day at Valve playing with three other people, we started out by playing through the first part of the "No Mercy" campaign with a few bots. You'll always be playing the game with three other characters, be they bots or humans, and, as we mentioned above, players can hop in and replace one of the bots at any time. Speyrer also mentioned that the game will have a "get up and make a sandwich" feature, allowing you to step away while a bot takes over your slot. If what we've seen of the bots (and what we know about our friends' skills) is any indication, sending all our friends off to make sandwiches could prove to be a winning strategy.

As the action kicked off, one of the first things we noticed was the fact that little hints will pop up from time to time, giving the player information on everything from how to open doors (and which ones will actually open) and when to reload or heal. We were told that, rather than put the player through a tutorial level, they'd learn the gameplay basics on the fly. Once you've done an action a few times, many of the hints will stop appearing, although there will still be on-screen indicators. You'll be able to see your teammates and their status (a blue highlight during normal moments, red when they are being attacked or have fallen), as well as the location of weapons, ammo, and health. Since most of the game takes place in the dark, these come in quite handy.

This was our first chance to go hands-on with the Xbox 360 version of the game, and the controls feel like they are pretty solid, although it did take a little time to get used to some of the difference between Left 4 Dead and other shooters. The sticks control your movement and aiming, while the right trigger is used to fire your equipped weapon. Hitting the left trigger will pull off a quick melee attack, while pressing the B button will allow you to reload your weapon. When you need to open or close doors, pressing the X button will perform that action, while you can use the Y button to switch weapons (you can carry either one or two pistols as your secondary weapon, and they'll never run out of ammo). Finally, the A button will make your character jump, and clicking the right analog stick will allow you to zoom, although the hunting rifle is the only weapon that supports this.

The one feature that comes in most handy is the quick spin-button, which is mapped to the right bumper. Since the game is so dark and your enemies are so numerous (and fast!), there will be a lot of moments when they'll get the jump on you. As the PC version's mouse-and-keyboard control scheme makes it much easier to turn around, the developers wanted to ensure that Xbox 360 owners would have the same ability. It wasn't long before spinning around with the right bumper was second nature, especially when we couldn't see where the threat was coming from. And make no mistake, there are a lot of threats to deal with as you play through the game.

While the majority of the enemies you face are your garden-variety zombies (referred to as "the common horde" by the developers), you'll also run into some special enemies from time to time. The first one we came in contact with was the Hunter, which is able to jump from far away and pin you down while slashing away. The Smokers, on the other hand, have the ability to grab you from a distance with their long tongues and pull you away from your compatriots. Boomers can vomit all over you, which not only dramatically blurs your vision, but also acts a pheromone that attracts any nearby zombies. The Tank is exactly what you'd expect, a hulking zombie that won't go down without a fierce fight. If he gets too close, he'll knock you to the ground and pound you into a pulp.

Once we were done with the first of five chapters in the "No Mercy" level, we took some time to wipe off our sweaty palms and chat about achievements. As was the case with The Orange Box and the Steam versions of the games available in the pack, you'll be able to look at your achievements at any time from the start menu. The developers saw the achievements (which are the same for the Xbox 360 and PC games) as a way to reward players for learning deeper tactics and valuable skills, rather than throwing them out there for simply finishing the levels or killing a certain number of zombies.

Many of the achievements can be viewed as challenges that will fundamentally change the way that you play through the game, similar to those seen in Half-Life 2. For instance, there's one that rewards players for making it through a level without taking any damage, which seems completely insane to anyone who's played the game. Some of the others include Tongue Lasher, which you'll earn for killing a Smoker that's grabbed you with his tongue, and Towering Inferno, which is given for hitting a Tank with a molotov cocktail. Then there are the "rite of passage" achievements, which reward players for performing certain (and highly dangerous) actions. For instance, Fill Up the Tank gives you an achievement for taking down a Tank without any help from your fellow survivors. You'll need to go for this one with three buddies, since the bots will automatically try to chip in.

With that, we decided to take a look at a new level that has only been glimpsed in screenshots. Called "Blood Harvest", this level leaves the urban environments far behind and heads out into the country. While it might seem to be safer in an area with a lower population density, it quickly became apparent that this wasn't the case at all. The level began in an abandoned railway car that was being used as a safehouse, and we loaded up on ammo and health packs in preparation for the upcoming battle.

Taking a look around the safe area revealed a number of different weapons, each of which was suited for a particular type of play. For instance, while the shotgun was perfect for the up-close-and-personal style of combat found in the urban environments, the hunting rifle worked a bit better out in the country, since there was a much longer line of sight. It seems like the assault rifle will be the best all-around weapon, although the SMG actually felt a bit more powerful than one would expect. The safehouse also had a bunch of graffiti and messages scrawled on the walls, which is how the developers will be fleshing out the story and giving players a glimpse into what is happening to the world.

By far the coolest element of the game is the virtual director, which will ensure that the game never play out the same way twice, by changing where items can be found as well as where and when enemies will appear. For instance, the first time we played through the "Blood Harvest" level, we came to a large field that was full of head-high cornstalks and had to deal with a bunch of common zombies, then make our way into an abandoned farmhouse to grab some health packs. However, the second time we played it, we ran into a pack of zombies before getting to the field, and found that there weren't any health packs inside the house at all. This is a fairly simple example of how the director system will work, but we noticed dozens of other instances as we played through the game.

Above all, the development team has done an excellent job of creating a foreboding atmosphere, and it always feels like danger is just around the corner. Since there aren't any scripted events and the director has control over what appears and when, you'll never know when you'll turn a corner and run into a pack of the flesh-eating undead. The battle in the cornfield was one of the most intensely terrifying experiences I've ever encountered in my years of gaming, especially the time when we heard a witch (the most powerful of the zombies, she won't attack unless provoked) crying somewhere in the dead stalks. Knowing that a single stray bullet could bring her wrath down upon us was particularly harrowing, and we tried our best to sneak through the field undetected. There are also what the team is terming "Crescendo Moments," during which you'll be able to prepare for the coming attack before doing something (such as answering a rescue call on a radio) that will trigger it.

Amazingly, the three-plus hours we spent with Left 4 Dead went by far too quickly, and I found that my hands were trembling when I put the controller down. We even had a chance to talk about the competitive multiplayer, which will feature four-on-four action, with one team being comprised of survivors and the other of special zombies (as well as the rest of the horde). As the zombies, you'll be able to work together to separate the survivors in an attempt to keep them from getting to the next safehouse. For instance, one player might grab another with the Smoker's tongue while another blinds a second player by vomiting on him or her with the Boomer. Once the survivors are confused and separated, it's much easier for the horde to take them out. We can't wait to check out this mode, which sounds like extra frosting on an already-delicious cake. Left 4 Dead is proof that when it comes to gaming, zombies are still at the top of the food chain.

Slightly disappointing those gameplay clips - theres no body dismemberment - with a shotgun you should be abel to take legs/arms/heads off. Also is there team damage ? as on console with the slower/less precise aiming its going to be hard not to hit your teammates.

Probably far too fast paced to handle full body dismemberment though saying that the engine is quite old now. Heads definitely explode though which is at least something :D

There is team damage but from what I can gather it's not going to be easy to kill each other unless you stand still and let a team mate pump 2 - 3 clips into you. Valve are being very particular about not letting griefers be able to ruin the game though I'm sure there's always something they haven't thought of.

The release date is November 18th (well in America at least but I assume it's worldwide) to coincide with Half Lifes 10th Anniversary.

Ars Technica aren't keen on the 360's controls:

I've read on various sites that the controls are supposed to be fine and even pretty good. One of the PC guys at 1UP who is more or less only a PC player, especially for FPS, said the controls felt very good for the 360.

Of course I haven't played it yet but I'm sure Valve would take any negative feedback very seriously and here's hoping they provide fully customisable controls in the final retail.

Some news:

If you're still bummed about the delay of Valve's upcoming zombie masher, Left 4 Dead, cheer up a bit as company co-founder Gabe Newell confirmed with Videogamer that a demo of the title is coming our way. Newell said on the report:

"We will be releasing demos for both the Xbox and for the PC. I don't know what the date is for release on that, though. I think it's going to contain the first part of one of the campaigns. I think it'll probably be Hospital [level] but I'm not sure."

Oh, and don't worry, you'll be able to share the fun with or without your buddies as Newell adds, "Oh yeah...You'll be able to play single-player and co-op in the demo." However, Newell didn't specify any release date for the demo. Check out the latest details on the game and make sure to hit the jump for the latest video.

Yes, it sucks waiting two more weeks for Valve's Left 4 Dead after it was slightly delayed. However, game writer Chet Faliszek did give us more info on this anticipated, zomber fodder-filled title through 1UP's report.

According to the report, the DLC content in Left 4 Dead will be "rolling much more quickly" than in the FPS hit Team Fortress 2. Released in October 2007, one of the initial content updates to TF2 (not counting interface/Steam changes) was the Gold Rush content released this recent April. Faliszek explained that DLC plans for Left 4 Dead include more campaign missions, levels, enemies and to the delight of the zombie pyros, a flamethrower will be added "not long after launch".

Also, according to the report, the Xbox Live support of the title will be running on dedicated servers, which means there would be a high chance of having no lag interruption during your online zombie fragfest. Valve didn't really disclose how many servers they would have running, the report said that they company implied that "they'd have everyone covered".

The demo has been announced officially for 11th November with early preorders on Steam (and on 360 in North America) getting early access to the demo next thursday.

There doesn't seem to be any early access to the demo for 360 owners outside of North America though I'm not that bothered since next weekend I'm pretty sure quite a few people will be playing Gears Of War 2. November 11th is perfect timing for the demo.

Well the early access to the demo of this goes live today so impressions if anyone gets to try it :)

Apparently over at Gamestop if you fill out this page (http://www.gamestop.com/gs/landing/l4dearly/default.aspx) leaving the transaction id blank but putting in a valid email address you will get a code (for either 360 or PC depending on what you chose. They apparently don't check for transaction ID and lots of people have said they've been getting codes through to their email.

I got it on Steam and just completed the demo (single player with AI. Not ready to join strangers on that game).

Wow. Talk about intense.

I still think that zombies shouldn't run. But this is crazy. They come left, right, centre, up top and from below (seeing them clamber over half collapsed walls to reach you is scary). Your team shoots a passage into the zombies with shouts of "Reloading!" or "Hunter!" to let you know when not to rush into the fray or when you are about to be pounced on by a scary zombie. And when a Boomer barfs on you, all bets are off! Your sight goes gooey and zombies from all over the place suddenly find you even more appetising. :help:

I don't play shooters and I'm a scaredy cat. But this has got the mood and the grainy (configurable) look of a zombie B movie down to a tee.

Fun times.

Graphics are not showcase graphics. But they make up for that plenty with the atmosphere, shadows and smoke and grainy scary looks. Also, by having all those zombies rush you at the same time. Besides, you don't have too much time to sightsee. :)

Well that gamestop link actually worked (they must have crappy programmers if they don't even check for transaction ids!) and i've been playing it online for most of the night.

It's absolutely fantastic and I really can't wait to get my hands on the full game.

I played about 6 - 7 games at least and there was no lag at all during any of the games, smooth as butter.

Each game was different too, the AI Director is an evil *******, the way you hear sounds from one direction and then have zombies either appear behind you/from above you etc. No game's been the same so far.

The demo goes public worldwide next tuesday (people who preordered only get it early for a few days) and I highly advise anyone to give it a go, it's a blast and it will be more fun to play with forumite/friends than random americans. Though funnily enough every single random person I met was actually pretty cool. One guy even said something like 'I've been waiting for this game my entire life!' The way the game makes you work together doesn't give you time for any messing around/griefing. Really well thought out design.

Excellent demo, was expecting a really short level to play on but it's actually bigger than I imagined it to be. It's alot of fun really, everything feels smooth and well thought out, lovely graphics and sound, hectic game play and everything I came to expect basically.

The hunters are proving to be a real pain at times, leaping about like they're spider man or something :p difficult to nail them, and the gooey-vision after being sicked on is really disorientating, I can see that scaring the pants off you when you're really in the thick of it.

I played on normal difficulty which so far is proving to be a litle too easy in singleplayer at least, pistols had unlimitd ammo, and I even picked up an extra pistol at one point which meant I could pretty much fire off rounds like crazy into crowds without having to reload too much, 30 bullets per clip you see.

Can't wait to try it out co-op next, this is easily matching any expectations I had. Great fun.

Loving this so far. Had some cracking games earlier.

Playing with MattKB and a random (who was a decent chap) on Expert. We'd just gotten outside, "This is pretty easy for expert" Matt says at which point approx 300 zombies break through the closed door he had his back to and nearly gnawed his face off.

Then at the end I was about to enter the safe room on the second floor balcony, when just as I was about to put my foot through the door a smoker grabbed from the floor below and dragged me back down there. I got saved and limped back into the safe room with a sliver of health when the last survivor got jumped by a hunter right outside and I got killed by friendly fire while trying to save him.

You may have to pay for 1st class to get it on day of release - I recently ordered GOW2 with them and my estimated delivery date changed quite considerably when I upgraded from the free delivery option, with the game turning up on release day. Had a game with 2 friends tonight (PC) and it was a blast. my take after 1.5 hrs play on 360:
the music makes this. incredibly atmospheric, the sense of creeping dread is real.
graphics are a bit of a timewarp. including the old counterstrike "legs visible though a door" thing.
but hats off to them for trying something new. played the same level 3 or 4 times and it was totally different each one. online a bit hit and miss with some guys rushing ahead, or setting off the car alarm for fun etc.
but that pre-order is solid. and with some decent friends in tow, essential.

was surprised how good offline with bots is tbh, but is true the real joy is playing online, as long as you have a like minded team.

there were times last night I was getting v hacked off, guess some ppl just don't get what co-op means, was better with just 2 of us & bots.

Played some online demo last night with Mr Woo and others, it was quite a blast and certainly has me interested in getting the full game.

I do wonder though - are there many alternative routes to the save checkpoints? After playing some more I thought perhaps a drawback of the "No Mercy" level was it's linearity (which it disguises well) but it's still a direct route down the subway and into the depot.

I think we could see many add-on levels, and maybe extra character skins and weapons with future DLC perhaps.

Also, gameplay advise please - but what is so dangerous about Witches that you should turn off your flashlights? And why do some players have a yellow glow around them sometimes?

These are just guesses, but I think the yellow glow means that character has been vomited on by a Boomer? Might be wrong, unless it's purely a health thing.

As for the flash lights/witch, as far as I can tell she's just a pain in the arse to kill (at least on the harder difficulty), and you have the option of bypassing her altogether if you wish by turning off the torches and not shooting at her.

Thanks for that.

I wonder, can you get bitten and turn into a Zombie, or is it just a case of being ripped apart on the floor "Day Of the Dead" Style and sitting out until (if) your team reach a checkpoint?

ajr90
12-11-2008, 22:37
As I recall from playing earlier, the yellow glow means the character in question has been jumped on by a hunter, or constricted by a smoker, so they're in need of rescuing by you or another player.

So I just grabbed a gas cannister and blew it up near them.

RomerojpgX
16-11-2008, 14:13
Yup the control thing still gets to me, how anyone can think for a heartbeat a pad is better (more controlable, effective, precise, accturate, quick) than mouse and keyboard is beyond me.
Still I guess my PS3 would be better for most people as barley noone I know plays games on a PC :( shame they cannot link up all versions online and let us all play, but if they did that the PC players would decimate all the console gamers as they have the mouse advatage. There must be some way to get us all online on mixed formats at level pegging, well you would think.

Can you play it on PS3 with a mouse? or is that a silly question?

toffee
16-11-2008, 14:20
romero - well its not coming out on the ps3 anyhow. and no, you can'y play 360 with a mouse.

i used to play pc shooters, but much prefer to play on the 360 now. reasons:

1. not as much cheating (tho I accept this has improved on PC now)
2. i can sit on the sofa
3. Most people use the headset, and it works well
4. I gave up on PC games cause I was sick of upgrading the PC every year

Everyone is on a level playing field when it comes to using the pad, and thats the important thing to me
