"Sexy!"

"Within her secret life... lived a hidden desire for passion!"

"Erotic masterpiece!"

All these (and more, probably) are used to describe Belle de jour on the cover of the imminent R1 release... now, it may be ten years or more since I last saw this film, but I can't say these tag lines accord with my recollections!

Still, brownie points to Disney (of all people) for releasing it!

Maybe Deneuve tells you in her interview...

I was involved with the 1992 theatrical revival, and we took a calculated gamble that if we marketed it as some kind of porn film (“The Rolls-Royce of sex films” was our tagline), we’d attract a new audience without alienating people who knew very well what it was.

And it paid off spectacularly – it smashed the Everyman Cinema’s house record when it opened, and I think it did something similar at the other venue. Of course, the fact that the only other major film opening that week was My Cousin Vinny didn’t exactly hurt – newspaper picture editors were faced with the choice of Joe Pesci in a leather jacket or Catherine Deneuve wearing rather less, and the result was free advertising of a kind we could only dream of!

As for the Chinaman’s box, Bunuel’s answer was: “whatever you want there to be”. (He didn’t have the faintest idea!)

Nice one - I'm surprised RR didn't sue you....

It's not out yet and if the release schedule is anything like it has been in the past don't hold your breath for it.

I think both the US and Canadian DVDs are the cut/incomplete version. Also, the Canadian release is one of those nasty bi-lingual sleeves with, ridiculously, the title being twice on the spine - once for the English language market and again for the French Canadians... - both times saying 'Belle De Jour'.

Fantastic film though, shame the DVD releases so far haven't done this masterpiece justice.

I didn't think that these were cut? Does anyone else have more info?

I agree, though, absolutely wonderful movie, deserving a better release.

Interesting film, can be quite funny as well as sexy, particularly the necrophilic customer and the scene under the table where they refer to the broken bottle and sesame (? cardamom mebbe) seeds. At the same time its quite cold so the erotic potential is muted.
Under no circumstances order the R2 release (unless you're french) as I ordered the UK edition last year and gave up sometime earlier this year.
Belle de Jour was already out as R1 but apparently a bad transfer
with plenty of picture damage but hopefully this release makes up for it.
Catherine Deneuve mmmmm:luv:

(22 posts ? They reset my post count after changing my email address (old one was employer who made me redundant) !!!

You missed my point - it didn't matter whether or not the critics liked My Cousin Vinny (as it happens, they generally did): the fact is that if you're a picture editor looking for an eye-catching still, there's not much contest between Joe Pesci and a twentysomething Catherine Deneuve regardless of how good or otherwise their respective films are!

There's not much contest between a twentysomething Catherine Deneuve and pretty much anything else on the planet...

I last saw this film about 10 years ago and still remember
(a) a twentysomething Catherine Deneuve
(b) the line 'Sperma retentum venenum est'

Yes her sister. Unfortunatly she died before having the time to become really famous.
