View Full Version : Is there an easy way to (batch) edit the timestamps in EXIFs?

I went away at the weekend and did my usual trick of forgetting to change the time on my camera, resulting in my taking pictures with timestamps two hours out of sync.

Is there an EXIF editor that will allow me to easily change the time each photo was taken? Ideally in one go - i.e. I'd like to be able to shift the timestamps each two hours forward without doing them all individually.

If possible I'd like to change the EXIF information in the RAW image files - can I do this?

I think this will work. I'd be interested if there is a free tool to do this, as I've done the same thing more than once

Exifer (http://www.exifer.friedemann.info) will do the job - and other things too. Very handy bit of software.

Just out of curiosity, does it matter if the time is only 2 hours out? Unless the content requires you to know the exact time of taking in the future?

Or is it just one of those things that bugs you because you know its wrong (I'm guessing its this, because I get annoyed by things like that too sometimes) :)

what you need is Jhead (http://www.sentex.net/~mwandel/jhead/)

then you just need to do a

jhead -ta+2:00:00 *.*

Exif Farm will also do batch EXIF changes, although it costs..

Thanks for the suggestions everyone - I'll have a look at those now.

Silverpenguin - it is indeed one of those things that bugs me because I know it's wrong! Ordinarily I wouldn't be too bothered further than this, but the photos were taken in Finland, where it doesn't get that dark overnight at this time of year, and it would be good to see what time each picture was taken without having to remember the clock was set on UK time.

I give you a  and raise it another .

However that's for JPEGs. I've never tried it with RAW files. Technically I don't think all raw formats use the 'EXIF' standard. Though I only mess with EXIF once I've converted to JPEG.

It seems that Exifer gets good reports all round, but as you say DK it doesn't appear to work with anything but JPEGs. I'll bear it in mind though.

In the end I used Microsoft Photo Info (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/prophoto/photoinfo.mspx)*, which works with RAW no problems. I couldn't get it to batch edit though, which was frustrating; that is, it would edit the EXIF data for a batch of files together, but when I tried adjusting the time (selecting to use the capture time plus 2 hours) it altered the timestamps on each and every photo to exactly the same time, being two hours after the first picture had been taken - some use that is!

However, I didn't have a huge number of photos to alter and so did them individually, which didn't take too long, and I figured I might spend more time finding a suitable alternative program than it would take to do it individually. But if anyone finds something that will work on a batch of RAW files (or manages to get Photo Info to work sucessfully), I'd definitely be interested to know!

(Exif Farm mentioned above looks like it would do my batch time-change properly, and similarly Jhead and Power Exif, but only for JPEGs - thanks for the suggestions though.)
