Any views on how this compares to the Sony at 350 in argos?

Personally would go for the sony alpha than the d40
the d40x more interesting, but probably still side with the alpha

The D40 has the advantage of better high ISO performance, its also smaller, but the Sony has in camera anti shake and you can use it with a wide range of Minolta AF lenses, while the D40 will only autofocus with a few recent Nikon lenses and Sigma HSM lenses. Older Nikon AF lenses are manual only.

I thought the D40 and the D40(X) were different cameras?

Go on then - tell us about these huges differences
One has 6mp one 10mp one 2.5fps one 3fps one starts at iso100 the other iso200 that's about as huge as it gets.
ps The cheaper model actually produces sharper less noisy results as well

The D40x has a sensor cleaner as well, doesn't it?

Nope, but there was a review recently where it found the self cleaning sensors did jack all to keep itself clean.

The D40X has the inferior sensor...
Personally I prefer the lower high ISO noise of the 6MP sensor over the slight increase in resolution of the 10MP. That particular 6MP sensor (a slightly different version also used in the D50) is supposed to be a cracking sensor.

Updated the title to avoid the confusion.
From what I've been told this is a cracking first camera for getting into DSLR (hence why I'm buying it).
