I might have to find the time to listen to this as I missed this as well but did see the various performances when they were on the "Red Button".

"When I'm Sixty Four - Russell Brand"
Surely this is a joke? To me its just lost most of its credibility with that.
I think its an interesting concept - making some modern bands use 4 track recording. In a way I think the real magic of Sgt Pepper is the fact it was so ground breaking at the time - esp they way it was recorded. Nowadays even the latest throwaway single from any pop/zlistceleb is over produced with layer after layer.
I was born in 71, so I just missed out on the Beatle era, but I remember my dad telling me about listening in awe to Sgt Pepper in headphones, and hearing a trumpet move thru his head from one ear to the other. The wonders of stereo eh? Funny how we all take it for granted now.

The NME version from the 80s has dated terribly. Only The Fall and maybe Billy Bragg still stand up.

Herd a bit of that track last night and actually quite liked it.

Did no-one do A Day In The Life?
Is there any program to download that stream? I want to listen to it on my MP3.

Saw the thing on BBC2 the other week.
Dull, insipid and unimagnative covers the lot of them.
Although it did prove the point that the drummer in Razorlight is the only one with any talent.

I thought the Kaisers and Travis covers were very good.

I love the Kaisers version of 'Its Getting Better' and, although I'm not a huge Razorlight fan, I like their cover of 'With a Little Help from my Friends"

I amended your post for you, Majestik. ;)
Honestly, I thought it sounded quite a good idea until I saw the list of bands asked to do it.
Of course the 20th anniversary event was very high profile and resulted in a no 1 - Wet Wet Wet's - with a little help from my friends.
I think the album release was called Sgt Pepper knew my father - depressing to think we r as far on from then as then was from the original release! If that makes sense.

It was commisioned by Radio 2. There hardly likely to sign up the Aphex Twin and Dumpy's rusty nuts.
Oh God, I remember Seargeant Pepper knew my father!
Thanks for making me feel old

The bands were really limited by what they could do apparently though, as the Beatles-whore-machine wanted pretty much clinically identical releases rather than re-workings, which would have been far more entertaining.

Sorry it's a bit OT, but it was interesting to see a Paul McCartney advert for iTunes, yet they still won't allow any Beatles tracks on there.

They are scheduled for release very soon according to Sir Paul.
Probably allowed his new album on there to allow it all the help it could get, as drunken itunes purchases might help it shift a few copies.

A deals been done between apple(Beatles) and apple (Computers for Graphic designers) and Beatles tracks should be available soon. Hopefully they'll get remixed to the standard of the Love album.

It's on E music as well. He's in thier top ten alongside Dan Deacon!
Macca signed up with Starbucks for an album. Obviously there keen to prove they can shift cd's as well as coffee.

So everyone's favourite Captain Jack Sparrow lookalike has legwayed into music now as well as film.
My my, what a media whore.

that's a shame, I was looking forward to hearing the bands bring their own style to the songs.
I do like a couple of the bands (Athlete, Zutons, Fratellis) so I'll definatley be having a listen.

I only really liked the Oasis one, and the Brand cover was nice (And its only about a minute long anyway).
I liked the Travis cover.
Athlete was poor, pretty much identical.
Russel Brand was a joke.
The Zutons wasn't very good.
and the Jazz take on Mr Kite was good until it went all crazy.
I didn't bother listening to anything else, the banter in-between the songs was the best part.
