This is one of my most eagerly anticipated albums of the year and i've not got long now to, it's out on 9th July. Anyone heard it yet? Is it as good as 'Turn On The Bright Lights' & 'Antics'?

New single, 'The Heinrich Maneuver' can be heard here:

Excellent - hadn't heard the release date for this yet, so I will go off an place an order right away. Haven't heard any tracks from it yet...there was even talk that they'd split up towards the end of last year, so it's good to see the new album coming out.

Can't wait for this.

New track doesn't sound like a massive departure - but that aint a bad thing.

Gutted they haven't announced a night in Manchester yet though. :(

I'm really looking forward to hearing this. I don't think Interpol have ever done a duff track and they're amazing live:notworthy

I'll be interested in giving this a listen when it comes out. I'm not their biggest fan, but I do like some of their previous output - new track sounds like they're still on form anyway.

Somebody wrote in the NME that the new album is "unmitigated dog****".

Although I'd normally ignore such pathetic, lazy journalism (it is the NME after all) it does sound a little worrying for somebody to feel that strongly against it. Especially in an article about Editors. :help:

The new Editors album is pretty damn close to dog poo. Perhaps he got confussed?

Any leaks yet? Someone tell me if there's anything on the new album closely resembling Obstacle 1, or Narc. If so, they'll be no need for me to worry.

After one listen i'll say Interpol fans will be very happy with the new album.

I'm getting all giddy.

The lads are doing a one off gig at the Astoria on 2nd July, to coincide with the release of their new single.

Very disappointing, their poorest album to date. Editors have nothing to worry about, their 2nd album is vastly superior to this. A shame as it starts off well but dullness sets in quickly. :|

Now for me it's the exact opposite and i thought the Editors album was a right load of pony.

Are you going to review it?

Hoping so as I thought your Antics review was spot on. Great review.

Blimey - can you only like Interpol or Editors and not both?

I missed that memo.

FWIW - IMO they're both pretty good efforts.

No, liked the first Editors effort but the new ones seems to have droped tunes for over earnest angst.

It's like a gothic version of Blur v Oasis.

Seriously, I don't think anybody has said that you can't like both. But when two similar bands release albums at the same time - then comparisons of quality are going to be inevitable.

What mystifies me is how anybody can think that Editors are better.

 .... Seems like it's just me so far. I will give Interpol several more listens as their previous albums were slow growers for me. Both Editors albums are better IMO than anything Interpol have done. Much more melodic.

Hopefully will be doing yes. Now I'm back in the motherland I can start contributing to CDTimes again. For the record, I like Editors and Interpol. BUT... Editors are sounding a bit Stipe these days.

Well I've listening to this all week and have to say they haven't disappointed again. It's a stunning album that just gets better every time I hear it.

Pioneers, Threesome, Mammoth, Pace is the Trick, Chemistry, Who Do You Think, Wrecking Ball - All of which are outstanding tracks.

I like the new Interpol album a lot. After hearing some rumbles that it was bad and that they need to 'change their sound', I don't agree with either point. To me this is the transition of sound we were waiting for when we heard Antics. It's punchier, more upbeat and generally sounds good.

Also, I really like the slightly odd artwork. It doesn't say what museum it was taken in, though. I presume the big one in New York that's the subject of Night at the Museum?

The concept was inspired by the Natural History Museum in New York but it was actually shot in a museum in LA. :dork:

I was reading an interview the other day where the band were talking about how some music mag journo asked them recently "Why do you have a picture of two animals mating on the album cover?"

I agree, but what about this album? I guess I still think the first album's better but I know it more so I listen to this one more often at the moment.

I've given this album a few goes now, but unfortunately it's not happening for me.

Loved the early EPs, Turn On The Bright Lights was possibly my favourite album of the last 10 years, Antics was a pretty good follow-up and they're a great live band, but this new album just doesn't seem to have the depth or power to me. Older songs like Precipitate or The Specialist sound so much more sophisticated and exciting whereas they just seem lacking in ideas now to me.

Fingers crossed that the next release is more to my taste as I do love this band!

I love the highlights of the first album intensely, but do find it a bit uneven in places - Antics and Our Love to Admire seem more consistent and I probably listen to them more. I favour Antics high drama, but the pop push of the new one is running it close. Great band and, yes, lots better than Editors to these ears.

As much as I love Turn On The Bright Lights, it isn't a patch on this album in terms of sophistication. The band, themselves, have even said publicly that there are songs on this album they just weren't capable of writing 5 years ago. TOTBL appeals to me because of it's rawness and power but this album just seems like a natural progression and has more textures and creative writing.

I don't want to be patronising but maybe this album is, maybe, a little too sophisticated and you're missing the subtleties? Not sure, I guess it's either that or it's just a matter of personal taste. It's the only reason I can think of as to why an Interpol fan wouldn't like this album. :D

Anyway ....

One of the main reasons I love Interpol is they have conquered that wonderful ability of being able to produce songs that sound melancholy but, at the same time, remaining up-tempo. The last band I can think of who mastered that so well was ... The Smiths.

Well, perhaps you're right, but at the moment I disagree. Maybe I should stick with it a bit in case I am missing something.

To clarify though, I don't dislike the album. I just love the earlier material to pieces and much prefer it to this.

Yup love it. Great album. But agree the first is still the best.

The first song is so cool "Here comes the fall..... walalalalalaallalalalaaalalalal la lallllalaa" awesome.

It's different enough to me for this to not be a surprise. The first album is a very atmospheric and moody piece while this one is far more about the songs. Antics is sort of midway between the two I'd have thought, though more like Turn on the Bright Lights to be sure.

You presumably prefer atmospheric albums :). That said, it's probably worth giving it a few more listens. :D

I prefer their LP's from new->old.. Was a relative newcomer starting on Antics so I guess I'm not suffering from 'best=first LP' syndrome ;)

Listened to "Admire".

My favourite tracks are:

The Skale
Pace Is The trick
All fired Up
Rest My Chemistry
Lighthouse.

I'd say the album is pretty decent.

Brilliant, brilliant record. My favourite of theirs by some distance. I like how they've abandoned some of the frantic scurrying of yore and the songs now breathe more easily, sit looser. 'Pace is the Trick' is breathtaking - when the band slide in, whoa ...

Also, crucial this, Paul Banks has a fabulous singing voice, melancholic and rich. Whereas that knob from Editors, with his second-rate Joy Division pilfering, sounds like he's trying to do a scary giant's voice for an amateur pantomime.

Hey, for balance, here's a pretty well written slagging off. :D

Does Paul sing the intro to Mammoth? I love it when the real Paul voice kicks in. And the energy at the end of the song is so intense it has me exploding.

Since writing my last comment, in less than 24 hours i've listened "The Scale" no less than 75 times, my second ever most listened to song or so Itunes tells me. :| I don't know what it is about that song.. but I'm hooked.

Fever Dawg
11-09-2007, 05:32
Strangely, the 3 songs on the album that I'm not as keen on are The Scale, All Fired Up & Lighthouse and you list all of them as your faves

Guess it goes to show that different things appeal to different people. Which is no bad thing of course.

I really can't see the point in 'Lighthouse'. Wrecking Ball seems like such a perfect closing track to the album .... and then it's immediately followed by another slow, inferior song. I almost get the feeling they had two slower songs that they wanted to finish the album but couldn't choose between either so put them both on.

I'm with GK on this one. Pace is the Trick is an amazing song. As well as Threesome and Mammoth and Who Do You Think and Rest My Chemistry and and .... :D

Pace Is The Trick is probably coming my 2nd favourite, but it's very close with that an All Fired Up.

Infact, in gerneral the more I listen to the whole album, the more it all grows on me further.

Great set list and so refreshing to see a band that isn't just there to promote their latest album - They played the same amount of songs off 'Bright Lights' as 'Admire'.
