There seems to be a lot of praise on the forums of late for that sub-standard, derivative, boy racer's wet dream "The Fast and The Furious".

Apparantly the DVD is selling like warmed baked confectionery in the states, and I just don't get it. The film had no plot (well not an original one - or interesting), acting was atrocious, direction was basically arse (quick cutting - internal shots) and worst of all it was interminably boring.

Maybe it's because I don't own a (slightly) souped up Nova with MAX POWER stickers on the back window and drive continaully through the town center, but I just don't get it.

People - listen to reason - THE FILM WAS REALLY PANTS. In a year which brought us Tomb Raider and The Mummy Returns; the Fast and The Furious excelled in being last years worst film - THAT is the only commendation I can give it.

FATF is great:D

OK it's no Citizen Kane but it beats watching Eastenders on a soggy wet Sunday afternoon.

I love my copy and it seems FATF and my Digitheatre DTS were made for each other. Long may their marriage last.

I loved this movie :)

I too would rather watch this than Eastenders....and Corrie!

I own a souped up boy racers car and thought the film was dire.

I didn't mind this film either. Good two hours to switch off and just enjoy some popcorn . The DTS soundtrack is brilliant.

I don't own a Nova either.

Well, I didn't think it was that bad, but I still couldn't figure out why it was so popular in the states.

A lot of people said it was like Point Break with cars instead of surfboards, but quite frankly, I thought it made Point Break look like Dr Zhivago!

The script was terrible, the acting was atrocious (was Paul Walker doing a Keanu impression, or is he really like that?), the music was pretty bad for the most part, and all the stunts were in the trailer.

But the worst thing about it was the total lack of any feeling of speed. In the first race scene, it was so obvious they were sitting on a green screen stage & everything around them was fake. The racing scenes in Driven were better, & that's saying something.

I guess it helps if you like those types of cars (I don't). The only one I liked was the Black Dodge at the end.

The final stunt was pretty cool though. In fact, the best thing on the disc is the easter egg. Didn't think it was worth keeping for 42 seconds of footage though :D

I agree some shots did look blatently composited (mainly the first race) But i do think it is one of the better films for conveying speed of the cars. Most Blockbusters think if they edit chase scenes within an inch of it's life it's suppossed to portray some sense of speed. When IMO it only serves to confuse the viewer. MTV style editing is fine for some things but car chases it isn't. For example, the chase sequence in the 'Rock'.

I thought FATF at least tried to rebalance this trend. It wasn't cut, cut, cut. So you had a feeling and a sense of where the cars where and what they were capable of.

I'm not saying it's the best examples of car chases but that it could have been much worse.

Why not just watch the car race through Paris in Ronin.

If high speed car action floats your boat (so to speak) you could do a lot worse than look out a copy of Taxi which is available on R3 with a DD5.1 soundtrack (and English subs) for about £10 delivered. The picture isn't anamorphic but it's good enough for the money and the car chases are spectacular and manage to convey a decent sense of speed too. What more could you ask for? :)

got agree... FATF is dire... really really awful.

I was feeling pain not unlike having my teeth drilled (without anaesthetic) after about watching it for 20 minutes.

dont think I saw a worse film/ DVD all last year.

stick to Ronin or the French Connection for a car chase.

You're just jealous! How much for your copy? (or put it on ebay and flog it to the yanks as they have run out of copies haven't they?)

hmmm I seem to be in the minority for having liked the movie. Its a popcorn movie, how seriously can you take it. It had plenty of action and heavily tuned cars. Maybe tuned cars are not your thing. The only thing I disliked was the gaudy paint jobs. But I guess that is what americans like. I saw the star Supra in the flesh and the engine tuning is truly a marvel.

Yeah, it was pretty dire, but I can think of 10 worse films of last year. For starters, Jeepers Creepers and Planet of the Apes are the 2 worst films of ALL TIME.

Surely there must be counselling for people like you;)

I recommend Dr. Brooke's "Neo-Russian/Modernist Japanese/Afghan Sheepherder Cinema Course for People with Low Entertainment Values" - a fascinating course that could just cure you of the socially corrupting condition from which you suffer.

FATF was cack. Almost as bad as Gone in 60 seconds but it's one saving grace was that there was no Vinnie Jones. I can see that it might have some appeal if you're a gear head . Which I'm not.

I honestly though TFATF was a great film. Fair enough some of it was a bit obvious, but in the same veign as say...MI2 its a turn off and enjoy the action with popcorn flick. I thought Paul Walker was pretty good, and the scene where him and Vin race the ferrari was great imho. :)

i'm also someone who is finding it hard to see why it's appealing so much to some.

GOOD POINTS --
The DVD is Excellent!! the transfer, and the soundtrack are really reference material, and in this respect i can understand the high DVD sales. Also the extra features are pretty decent.

The Cars are sexy, and look (and sound) great. The actresses are almost as sexy, and the guys ain't ugly. The car sequences are cool, even when they are clearly SFX, and the 3rd act with the whole chase is pretty good, especially the final stunt, which is probably the only 'PURE' stunt in the film ?!! That said, i've certinaly seen more exciting car chases etc..

BAD POINTS --
The plot isn't interesting, the acting isn't so good, and i'm sure the actors have talent, because i've seen them do better elsewhere, but it seems as though it's Cohen's fault as a director, because i've seen many actors underperform in his films. The characters are very straight forward, and no-one really stands out. The script is also poor. And i just want to say, i've actually enjoyed Cohen's previous films to a certain extent -- even 'The Skulls' :o

Apart from the car sequences (which there aren't that many), i can't really think of any particularaly memorable sequences (except maybe the two women kissing [PERVERT ALERT!!]). I mean look at a film like 'Bad Boys', clearly not a cinematic masterpiece, but perfect popcorn entertainment -- if anything it's the non-action scenes which people actually remember more. Which in my mind makes a film truly re-watchable.

I'm glad the film appeals to people. But in my mind, if it weren't for the 3rd act, i would have seriously considered this film as one of the worst of 2001. :(

And i agree with Analog Kid, Taxi is a cool movie!! If you liked TFAFT, then check it out :)

the acting was pretty bad and the dialogue was diabolical but it had nice cars and an even better soundtrack, and yes it is a blatant rip off from point break but so what a lot of filmmakers(not all!) these days are so bad that they have to rehash old stories.

I race cars (on purpose built circuits NOT roads) and found this to be trite and insulting. The bits that were cut from the movie (deleted scenes) should have been left in. Whilst not breath taking additions it may of made a bit more sense. The cars were the stars and I'd prefer to watch the dukes of hazzard just for the realism. Popcorn yes but a better example would of been days of thunder which whilst soggy still had some great racing shots. I am a complete car nut and just could not find anything here at all. In fact I had to watch it to two sittings.

Best chase sequence, what about Bullet, Steve McQueen!

Mr Stanton watched this at the weekend.

It's a rather lame piece of brain rot that's dosen't amount to much.

Although it is nice to know that if you hit a truck doing 80mph you'll walk away from the wreck with just a scratch on your shoulder.

TFATF i found to be one of the better no-brainers of last year...

Much better than Charlie's Angels, Mummy Returns and Tomb Raider. Whilst having a poor story line, the other three mentioned make it look like an ingenious work of art.

I have seen TFATF 3 times since buying it and thoroughly enjoyed it each time. The lack of story is probably what gives the tacky no-brainers such a high re-watch value, as there are not really any spoilers ruined for you the next time round. Just mindless action.
