Just noticed the Link are giving away a 32" Samsung LE32R88BD TV when you sign up to an 18month Orange contract. The contract is £75 per month but surely you'll be able to change this after x months??

Sounds an expensive way of getting a £500 TV

You can't change down on an Orange 'Animal' 18 month contract for 9 months.

surely it's a bargain though if you are a high user and would spend that anyway on line rental? it has 1500 anytime anynetwork mins and unlimited texts... that's quite a lot

I wish I did, then I could justify it :D.

Just below there is the option to pay £99 for the handset and go on the £55 a month contract, so saving £120 over the first 6 months in rental - not much of a saving I know but depends how long you want to keep the contract before changing down - thats a significant saving over 18 months... if that is you need that sort of a contract anyway.

Ill stick with my Genie £10 a month trick from 1998 - bargain of a lifetime that is :P

Ah - well let me enlighten you. Basically its £10 a month, you get unlimited free texts (actually unlimited) and 50mins a night to any other Genie (then BT Genie, now O2) phone or landline in UK. After that its 2p per min off peak. Just don’t try to do anything on peak. 20p per min 02/landline, 50p per min other networks. This combined with 18185 means my total cost for all phone usage is generally under £15 per month and I use my phone a LOT.

Secret is don’t have any friends not on 02, sort out life by text and refuse to call before 7, haha. Downside is you don’t get a mobile with the contract, but to me that means I get free reign on what type of phone I want and when I want to get it. Generally buy something not quite cutting edge on eBay and as long as my phone costs less than £10 a month I think I’m still doing pretty well out of it. Had a nice SE W850i for 3 months now. Unfortunately think this all finished before 2000 so not really a current bargain. I get a phone call a month from 02 trying to get me off the contract offering me all sorts of gubbins but it’s well worth hanging onto it for me.

Are some people still mad enough to think that these "free" PS3s, HDTVs etc really are actually free with mobile phone contracts?

I experimented with one site today. The standard phone with line rental and talk/text bundle cost £15 per month for an 18 month contract. But if you selected the "free PS3" option, the same phone and package suddenly became £75 per month. You do the math.

There are some decent ones. I've seen a free XBOX360 core on a £35 a month contract (for 18 months). If you're going to go on a 18 month contract anyway it pays to get a free XBOX in the deal.

Obviously you won't get the latest and greatest handsets.

Xbox 360 deal my brother got. It was about the same per month as he was paying on PAYG a month anyway and he got the 360 free.

These schemes are designed for poor blokes who have been denied permission to buy new toys such as PS3s and the like. As in "look darling, I got a free PS3 with my new mobile phone contract".

Yup, very perceptive there, as its the only way I could get a PS3 past the missus. 'oh, but I didnt even want it but since we do....etc etc'.

got a link to that as I can't believe the exact same option jumped up £60 :suspect:

The networks set the line rental prices, the retailers give the free gifts out of their commission, so yes they are actually free to the customer.

As an example, if you buy the 6300 from orange direct on panther 75 the phone is free and the line rental is £75 a month on an 18 month contract

Buy from the link it is exactly the same, free 6300, £75 a month, 18 month contract. You also get the 32" TV and it doesn't cost you anything extra. So hows that not free

Yeah, I completely agree. I bought my phone through dialaphone and got a free psp giga pack and £150 cashback (this was 12 months ago)

If thats not free I don't know what is? I pay £35 per month which is the standard T-Mobile Flex 35 contract and there wasn't any hidden charges (free phone as well).

I just checked their 360 deals and you can get one free on a 12 month contract (maybe not so good now you pickup a 360 for £150 nowadays)

Man! I wish I hadn't cancelled that contract. I ended up binning it about 3 years ago because there wasn't an O2 mast anywhere near where I worked so I couldn't get a signal. Cancelled it, took out an Orange contract and the next day (well almost!) an O2 mast went up outside the office!!!

For those of you who don't know, Genie were the online only arm of BT's mobile service. Which eventually all got merged into O2. £10 a month for 200 x-network minutes and unlimited free text messaging. Although, I guess you can't get that upgraded to support MMS and 3G now tho, but definately worth having if you just use the basic phone functions.

Well, O2 seem quite good at keeping cheap customers happy. I started on a £20 per month contract plus free new V3.
One year later, asked for PAC code, got given £9 month contract, same mins & text (about 100 mins 250 texts I think, but hardly use any) and a brand new Samsung E900.

Now it's time to change again they're offering me a Samsung u600 to keep £9 per month. Can't complain.
Worth talking nicely to the people at O2.

I just wish I could get a signal at home! :brickwall
