Oh my god!
New Zealand's fourth most popular folk-parody duo have only got a show on HBO starting in a few weeks.
It sounds a little like their radio2 show set in New York.
I can guarantee it will be hilarious.
Can't believe this has totally slipped past my radar.
Anyone else a fan of these guys?

God yes - saw their HBO one night stand and their Texan Odyssey recently - really looking forward to a full series. About time they got recognised properly.
Never heard of them before, but just checked out the first episode on HBO's site here. (http://www.hbo.com/conchords/index.html) Will have to check out the radio show.

That first episode was great - a couple of FOTC classics and a new song or two as well. Good to see Arj Barker and that woman from Peep Show too.
Just caught the first episode from th HBO site. This could be great!! :D
If you ever get the chance go see them live they are amazing. I have seen the quite a few times and it's always brilliant.
Alfie the racist dragon is a classic
I just watched the first episode and I found it very unfunny. There songs work so much better live when they fill in the details rather than tacking a sitcom round them.
Also they are really bad actors.

Of course they're bad actors. That's half the point. They're not supposed to be acting. Seen them live quite a few times and that's just supposed to be their "personas".
I watched it again last night and forgot how funny "I'm Not Crying" was....
never heard of them before, but watched the first ep this morning
pretty damn funny - I'll be sticking with it
ah hang on - rings a bell now
did these two used to be on Sat afternoons on Radio 2, and they always ended phoning up that bloke from Crowded House??

Watched this today and was very impressed. I really think they've got something here - like a New Zealand Mighty Boosh without the weirdness that ruins some of the Boosh stuff for me. Can't wait to see more of the series.
For new fans: give them a search on YouTube for plenty more fantastic material.

Me too, but i'm trying to figure out how they'll crowbar that one into a plot. Mind you, they got away with putting Rhymenoceros vs Hiphopopotamus in this one so anything's possible.
Loving this series - Murray ("ginger balls") is a star...
So there are only 3 episodes out so far?
The 3rd ep definitely was the funniest but I still don't think it works very well. Rhymenoceros vs Hiphopopotamus is a lot funnier live for example when Germaine say "my rhymes are bottomless" fell flat on TV but live it's the best line of the song.
I have seen the live loads and live they are brilliant and I really wanted this to do well (I don't know if it's doing well or not) but I don't think it's funny enough. It would work better if they had the sitcom bit and then a gig at night to do their songs.
Although I am in the minority in this thread.
And just to back up my fruitless argument:

As a long time fan of them too I somewhat agree with you.
I haven't been too impressed with the versions of the old classic songs.
"Think about, think, think about it!" - one of my favourites just didn't work as well as it does live or on that clip just posted.
Although their new songs have been great so far.

Yeah, I agree. I watched the Rhymenoceros vs Hiphopopotamus clip on the HBO site today and felt that although it was still funny, it didn't live up to the live versions. It's difficult to judge though, and I wonder if I'd never heard the song before whether I'd even have a problem with it.

The thing is if you had never seen them before that line would have meant nothing to you on TV.
I had never heard of them before I started watching, and I think the TV versions are better than the live.

Never heard of it until I read this.
Flight of the Conchords: best new sitcom in years?
By Guardian Unlimited / Television 09:08am
The top brass at the BBC are currently under fire from accusations of vacuous ageism, making decisions like Vicky Pollard (whatever the hell that means), and even faking footage of the Queen having a tantrum.
But at least one of the suits at the Beeb seems to know what they're doing - because BBC4 has just landed the rights to Flight of the Conchords, the best new sitcom to emerge for YEARS, writes Scott Murray.
Flight of the Conchords started its 12-episode run in the US last month on HBO, and already the show should be considered right up there with the channel's other stone-cold classics, Larry Sanders and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
The series - a spin-off from the BBC Radio 2 programme of the same name - follows the efforts of New Zealand's "fourth most popular digi-folk parodists" Jemain Clement and Bret McKenzie as they attempt to break their band in the States - all the while "trying to get with some very hot women".
They're never very successful at achieving either of their goals, thanks to the total ineptitude of their manager Murray, and their habit of following each other around when they go on dates. As a result, their conversation at times reaches Peep Showesque desperation:
"Man, back in New Zealand I was getting it on with lots of chicks."
"Who?"
"Sarah Fitzpatrick. Michelle Fitzpatrick. Claire Fitzpatrick. The list goes on."
"That was all of them."
"Triple figures."
"That's not triple figures, that's three."
Risible failure awaits round every corner. One particular date goes pear-shaped after Jemain helps Bret turn his two-hour ballad ("I'd solve the hardest puzzle / Race the fastest animal / Eat the biggest meal / Just to be with you") into the breezy If You're Into It, a cute love song which degenerates into an offer of a threesome involving the lewd use of foodstuffs. (The arrival of the glockenspiel at the end is pure Vic Reeves, you'll note.)
Meanwhile the Conchords' other musical pastiches are uniformly excellent - there are too many to mention, but the "motherflippin'" Hiphopopotamus should suffice for now. The Conchords currently have a fanbase of one, the besotted and borderline-deranged Mel, but back in the real world, Mighty Boosh levels of cultdom surely await.
BBC4 aren't going to air any of this until the autumn. But if you can't wait til then, new episodes are posted on the HBO website every week for a limited period. Exactly when I can't figure out though; that site's all over the shop.
Episode 4 .... another good one.
Not really much you can write for shows like this, probable reason for lack of posts in this thread :D

Episode 4 was the funniest yet. It has settled into the quirky sitcom mode and it's starting to work. The songs fitted in better in this episode than previously.

Ep 4 was the best so far - "If You're Into It" was the funniest yet, and I even enjoyed their adaptation of "Pencils In the Wind" for the TV - even if they did have to change the lyrics thanks to Americans not using "sellotape". "Scotch Tape of Love" just wouldn't have worked...
Their blank looks at the end when they realise they're on a crane are classic....
Bit of a poor ep this week but they did shoehorn in 'Business Time'

Caught up with this series over the weekend and although iniially abit lukewarm really liked it by the time I got to episode 5. Having not even heard of these guys before all the songs are fresh to me. :D
Wasn't that long ago that the BBC used to turn their Radio 2 comedy shows into top series, seems they're more interested in churning out woeful Little Britain/Catherine Tate style catchphrase and not a whole lot else comedy, lcuky HBO was there to pick up the slack with this.

Just watched Episode 4 (I'm a little behind) and really enjoyed it - I think it's my favourite since episode 1. The songs really worked and there were tons of funny deadpan lines and moments. Plus, I hadn't heard the second song at all this time, which was nice.
Already can't wait for the DVD of this series to get a release - will be on my Christmas list for sure.

Of course she is. She plays Nancy in season 2 onwards. Oh, and anyone who was watching "Mad Men" last week will have noticed that Mel (Kristen Schaal) played one of the telephone operators.
Just been reading about Jemaine's starring role in the Kiwi movie "Eagle Vs Shark" - out here 17th August.

Only up to ep 3 so but just decided this is genius. Jermaine is cracking at the dead pan comedy.

Believe it or not, they pitched it to the BBC as a TV show and they turned them down. So HBO picked it up. Now the BBC have purchased the rights to show it in the UK from HBO...

...and the actress playing Sally looked like she was struggling not to laugh most of the time...
She visibly smiles in the first scene of the Business Time sequence, just before she exits shot - Jemaine looks like he's going to crack too, but holds it together. Problem is it's a long single-shot scene and the rest of it is so perfect (including Bret's appearence), so I guess they had to use it.
Just finished this episode and enjoyed it as much as the previous ones. Business Time felt a little bit stale but I thought the new song was great. Plus the banter was on form - especially the conversation about Coco dumping Bret through Jemaine right at the end.
The latest ep was good especially the "flipping the bird" section but they way they shoehorned in Albi was crap.
The song at the end with Murray was brilliant though.

They must be starting to run out of existing FOTC songs to crowbar in to these episodes - I personally really enjoy figuring out how they're going to do it. As soon as Bret started talking about racism you *knew* "Albi" was on its way...
Surely we've got to have "Something Special for the Ladies" at some point - the next episode looks like it's called "Girlfriends" so maybe...? Surely "Mermaids" will make an appearance somwhere down the line?
I'm personally looking forward to them shoehorning in the "Bus Driver's Song" somehow. Somehow.
Ok, maybe they're not running out of songs after all...:D

They did the "Kissing" song in the latest episode and changed one of my favourite lyrics  -
"Just because I'm in an acoustic folk band...."
to
"Just because I'm in a 2-man novelty group..."
:nono:
Thought that was the weakest episode of the series so far.
cockbongo
07-08-2007, 17:34
Yeah, it wasn't brilliant, although i'm a sucker for schoolboy French so I enjoyed the first song a *lot*.
What I find a little frustrating is the way the characters change, albeit only a small amount, from week to week. Especially in terms of their personality around women.
Makes the show very disjointed in my opinion.
Perhaps it's all filmed out of order? I say this as it's weird that Murray couldn't email Quincy Jones because he had an archaic computer, yet a few episodes ago he got a new one.

Perhaps it's all filmed out of order?
Almost definitely. The only episode to back-reference (that I've seen) so far is 'Sally Returns' - and they only referenced the first episode (through Sally herself, and mentioning their 'Humans are Dead' music video), because episode 1 was the pilot and the only 'fixed' episode.

Just watched episode 7 tonight (the racism one). It wasn't quite grabbing me until Murray got his own song at the end which was fantastic - and really well put together too: with a long single shot, followed by the photocopier paper bit which I thought looked ace. Still loving this series.

You are not kidding - they better get songwriting.
I can only think of a couple of their regular songs that didn't make it into the series.
For the most part, their songs are not that great. I find the characters provide the most comedy, not when they sing.
Well you learn something new every day.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Figwit
In New Line Cinema's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy based on the book of the same name by J. R. R. Tolkien, Figwit is the fan-derived name for an unnamed Elf extra played by Bret McKenzie of Flight of the Conchords fame. "Figwit" is derived from "Frodo is great…who is that?" This is in reference to the distraction viewers may experience due to Figwit's physical appearance and demeanor.
Figwit is seen in the first movie during the council of Elrond. He sits next to Aragorn until they all stand up to argue. After Frodo shouts "I will take it!" and everyone turns and looks at him, Figwit is standing on the far right. He is standing in the background for only a fraction of a second.
Bret McKenzie is also seen in the third movie (credited as "Elf Escort") in the scene where Arwen is leaving for the Grey Havens and has the vision about her future son Eldarion. He is the one who tells her to get back with the others. He has two lines: "Lady Arwen, we cannot delay!" and then "My lady!"
Figwit's rise to fame began shortly after the first movie. Peter Jackson, who directed the trilogy, stated in the DVD commentary for The Return of the King that he was given dialogue in the third movie because Jackson became aware of the attention given to this extra. Jackson mentions the phenomenon in the commentary track on the extended version of the Return of the King DVD: "the decision to give him a speaking role was developed after the scene was scripted. Originally just a random cast extra was to give the lines, but it was decided that it would be fun if the Figwit actor was brought in to deliver them."

So do I really, especially when the guys get together with Murray, but I suppose that the songs are an integral part of what makes the show unique, so they have to get them right.
The Figwit story is pretty funny - Bret McKenzie talks about it here (http://www.figwitlives.net/edin.htm#ian) in an interview about the subject. I'd like to see the documentary that is knocking around about the whole Figwit phenomenon.

Flight of the Conchords fails to soar
John Plunkett
Wednesday September 26, 2007
MediaGuardian.co.uk
Much-anticipated HBO comedy Flight of the Conchords made a low-key debut on BBC4 with 161,000 viewers, a 1% share of the audience.
The Kiwi comedy, which stars Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie as a pair of musicians struggling to make it in New York, has been described as "Peep Show meets the Monkees" and first aired on BBC Radio 2 two years ago.
Its first episode had 161,000 viewers at 9.30pm last night, a 1% share, according to unofficial overnight figures.
It beat More4's Antony Sher documentary, True Stories: Murder Most Foul, which had 44,000 viewers between 9pm and 10.35pm.
But it lost out to BBC3 documentary Lucy: Teen Transsexual in Thailand, which averaged 393,000 viewers, a 2% share across the hour from 9pm.
BBC4's most watched programme of the night was the first in a new series of Charlie Brooker's Screen Burn, which had 197,000 viewers, a 1% share, from 10pm.

161k for BBC4 doesn't sound bad at all to me
Thing is unless they add up every viewer for every screening of each episode across a week it's hardly representitive of who is actually watching, plus it's only a guess anyway. BBCFour is a niche channel why have a headline like "fails to soar" when it was never going to be "massive" anyway!

Saw the HBO One Night Stand and the first episode of the series on BBC Four a couple weeks ago. Love 'em, genius. Went and 'acquired' the whole first season straight away. I agree about them/their songs working much better in the live show, but it's still one of the best comedies in a long time imo. Reminded of me The Boosh as well but Conchords are much better i reckon.

All the listings for this (R1 and R2) seem to indicate absolutely no extras which is slightly disappointing since I was looking forward to some commentaries or deleted scenes for this series. First TV show DVD I'd considered pre-ordering for ages - but that's slightly marred by a bare-bones set.

The radio show people mentioned is being replayed on BBC7 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/mainframe.shtml?http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/index.shtml?button) as of 11:30 tonight.
Also I heard Colin Murray mention that they'll be on his show on Radio 1 in the coming weeks as part of his "In the Company Of...." shows which are either on a Monday or Thursday, can't remember right now. Hopefully they'll have some new stuff.

Great that the radio series is getting a replay, although it is 'available' other ways for those who are interested.

Just started watching this. Absolutely love the songs but the rest is all a bit :|
They definiteley need to work on the sitcom side of it as it just seems like they pad everything aroung 2 songs per episode with next nothing in the way of a script or story.
It could be sooooo much better.

Wonder if they'll come over and do some shows here?
I wish they'd shown the One Night's Stand show as an hour long, as it seemed fairly evident to me that they'd filmed a lot more than 30 minutes worth of material but it was largely edited down.

I'm sure they'll be back over here eventually (i've seen them quite a few times as they were pretty regular at the Edinburgh Fringe for a couple of years) when the album is out.

I think the problem could be that the songs are so blatant and instant whereas the sitcom stuff is very subtle.
Personally i love the sitcom stuff more now i've got used to the concept. This weeks was great with the whole Yoko thing. In fact i forgot about the music this week until it happened. The bit in the managers office with the sandwich throwing was superb.

R2 DVD slipped out today with (very disappointingly) no extra content at all. Just the episodes in 1.78:1 and a DD2.0 audio track.
Booo! This series deserved a quality release and now I'm all angry at HBO Home Video (I guess?) for letting me down. Special Edition in the future? I doubt it.

I'm trying to listen to the radio series at the moment, but hearing Murray being referred to as 'Brian Nesbitt' is killing me. I'm glad I saw the show first, because I might be irritated by 'Brian being called Murray', when Murray is obviously much better :D Radio show is fun enough tho.
The TV eps get better as it went on, the early episodes simply aren't as good (tried rewatching them after finishing the series in case I warmed to it, but nope.. simply not as funny.)

Although it's not released until November 6th, all signs point to 'Yes'. Except that the episodes may be given the 5.1 audio treatment according to the HBO store (http://store.hbo.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2831563&cp=2764177).

There was certainly an ad before the series started airing, but whether this has continued week on week for each episode I have no idea. Probably not since you undoubtedly watch more BBC4 than I do.

BBC4's most watched programme of the night was the first in a new series of Charlie Brooker's Screen Burn, which had 197,000 viewers, a 1% share, from 10pm.
How can we trust an article by somebody who gets the name Screen Wipe wrong (especially since Brooker writes for the same paper!)?
I came to FotC from the Bowie episode, and am rewatching them all on BBC4 now -- they're utter genius. I hadn't seen them live before so I have no problem with "crowbarring" songs in. It's all brilliant.

I really wanted to like this. Quirky, original and totally off the wall.
It's the sort of show I'd normally like, but I watched three episodes and gave up because the two main characters are totally irritating. Also, the song bits do have some very funny lines but on the whole they got on my nerves.
I was quite taken with the concept and story until the ludicrous gooseberry sequence in ep 4. Then it got all too silly, and I gave up.

Seems that the R1 is 2.0 as well if this back cover scan (http://www.dvdempire.com/Exec/v4_item.asp?userid=99366055445116&item_id=1365489&tab=5&back=1&anchor=1#topoftabs) is correct. The only review online (http://uk.dvd.ign.com/articles/834/834217p1.html) doesn't help clarify.

Grrrr... HBO store lied to me!!
I was holding out for those 5.1 tracks - now I may as well get the R2 version. Having said that, it can be extremely expensive on the high street - the copy I saw in HMV the other day was £21.99!
I can't put into words how disappointed I am at the bare-bones release for this series.

Slight strange question but does anyone here know where to buy some of the Jumpers that Bret wears? You know those cheesy animal print type jumpers. I've checked ebay and google but just get camouflage type prints :(
thanks
p.s, I know no one could pull those jumpers off but Bret which is why I want to buy one for a friend :)

Bret scores success with recently purchased jersey.
The stripey jersey (’sweater’ for Americans and ‘jumper’ for the British) that Bret bought just over a month ago has turned out to be a very succesful purchase. Bret has had 5 compliments on it so far, including three from women. It has also appeared in a photo in Rolling Stone Magazine and also on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Bret said about the jersey "it’s a great jersey".

Yeah, HBO have said "let's do it" and the guys have said "We've used all our stuff!". I'm glad that they don't want to rush into another series though and I'm hopeful since I really enjoyed the original songs in season one.
I hope HBO's punishment for having to wait wasn't issuing that terrible season one DVD - I'm know, I know: that's the last time I'll mention it.

I was hoping to buy this for someone for Christmas but couldn't find readily available stock anywhere, even online. I wonder if the series is selling much better than expected, or whether the DVD was produced in a relatively small run.

Thanks for the info - I'd love to think that the DVD is selling brilliantly, but it's more likely to be a limited production thing. There are still plenty of copies in stores (HMV, Zavvi etc.) in central Manchester and at the Trafford Centre.

Aw, man. I was just thinking this evening about how long it'll be until the second series (I had self-predicted some kind early-summer start after deciding that the March start date mentioned above seemed too soon).
A whole year though? I guess I'm not that surprised - disappointed, but not surprised.

Feedback isn't great, a lot of people preferring the raw versions as opposed to the studio shiny ones. In all fairness, I can see their point.. they've been using the same material for so long now, it really is time to break out some quality new jams.

Like previously released studio versions of the tracks, they're not as good as the live ones. I think the best tracks came from their one-off HBO show, particularly Think, Think About It.
I prefer the studio versions because they can't play very well.
