It's about time I replaced my aging Canon Ixus v3. Was tempted by the new Ixus 70 as I really wanted something a bit more slimline and like it's design simplicity, but the Image Stabilization on the Ixus 850IS has lured me. From what I can gather from reading around it does a really good job and coupled with their Face Recognition feature makes for a great little camera.
Have yet to handle either of these cameras so will be checking them out before deciding. On paper the 850IS is about the same size as the v3 and the 70 comes in slightly smaller and lighter (and obviously cheaper).
It'll mainly be used for point and shoot photography, I'm no professional, but would at least like a little flexibility if I decide to dabble with anything more. They key things for me in order of importance would be image quality ( ), ease of use (fast, simple setup), size (smaller the better), price (~£200). I'm also keen that both of these models retain an optical viewfinder.
Have owned various Canon products over the years and always liked them, their range of (ultra) compact cameras still seems strong hence being the obvious choice. Have looked around at other makes but nothing really grabbed me enough to investigate further. Am I missing a potential candidate?
So I guess the questions are:
- Is the Image Stabilization really worth spending the extra on? I know some implementations aren't as good as the manufacturer claims.
- Is the 850IS really pocketable? Anyone compared it to an Ixus 70 is there much in the size difference?
- What other alternatives should I be considering?
