Looking for a shiny new DSLR. I haven't had a proper camera since my Canon T90 was stolen two years after it was released.
Been looking at D80 or a Canon solution ideally and the 18-200mm VR lens is selling the Nikon to me. Although I'm interested in tinkering with time lapse photography - I'm not going to always be able to connect a DSLR up to a laptop and would ideally like one with onboard time lapse - do these exist? failing that what's the smallest time lapse controller available? I'd appreciate any recommendations or feedback.
Have a look into one of these:

You'll want a large memory card and sturdy tripod. Also bear in mind that the budget Canon SLRs don't take this kind of cable release so (in terms of current models), 30D and upwards.
You could use the burst mode of the 20d or 30d if you're wanting to make a time-lapse film like this:

I dont think anyone would want an 8mp+ per frame time laps movie?
Would most likely downsize the image to small or medium I guess , that'll save on memory card.

Cheers for the replies.
Just treated myself to a D200 with the 18-200 VR while I was in the US last month. (and the MB-D200, US prices and the $'s current value led me horribly astray)
I appreciate the D80 and D200 are in different leagues when it comes to cost but the D200 does have an Intervalometer feature built into it. Set the start time, set how often it takes a shot and how many shots to take, and away it goes. Haven't actually used this feature yet.
I upgraded from a D70, and while I know in my heart that I didn't need to upgrade to the D200 (I only wanted the lens, as I mentioned US price lead me astray) the D200 does feel and behave much better then my old D70. Loved my D70, love the D200 more, but it was a silly purchase.
