View Full Version : New CD player for CD-R & CD-RW
I'm looking to replace my ageing Marantz CD-63 Cd player, mainly to play CD-Rs and CD-RWs.
My only concern is that I recently bought a JVC CD alarm portable thing (RD-T7RGN). In the instructions it states that it plays CD-Rs and CD-RWs, but upon burning my first CD-RW tonight, I find that it simply won't play.
As a result of this I don't want to buy a new CD player that won't play CD-RWs either.
Has anybody got any advice
BTW: the same CD-RW disc plays fine in my Sony 535 DVD player.

While most CD players (even older ones) will play CDRs OK, relatively few will deal with CDRWs, unless specifically designed to do so. There are some more recent players which will quite happily handle both - Richers had some Philips models on offer recently at £60 (CD713), £80 (CD723) and £100 (CD753) which handled both (no idea if they are any good though, but Marantz used to base all their CD players on Philips units - might not be true any more though).
As for your alarm thingy saying it will play CDRWs and then refusing to do so........er dunno - I suspect, from what you've said, that it's actually not CDRW compatible at all.
However, it may just be the disc, in that some disc brands are problematic on some units.

Cheers Mike,
Found a few more players from Marantz and Sony that play CDR/CDRWs.

Probably down to the CDRW disc (free one with my LITEON drive) with regards to this as you mentioned.
The whole CDR / CDRW on cd players seems very odd at times. I have a Samsung 709 DVD player and an ageing (but still rock solid :D ) Pioneer CD player (circa 1992). The pioneer has always played any CDR I have chucked at it until the other week, when I put a Vivastar in it and it flat out refused to even pick up the TOC. The Samsung would you believe plays only one type of CDR - you've guessed it; Vivastars!

CDRs are so cheap now, I can't understand why you're even bothering with CDRWs. :p
