Going out to New York for the first time next week, want to take my Canon 350d, but not sure how to pack it etc.

Think I'll only take the kit lens to cut back on kit (I'll leave the 70-300 and 90 Macro behind, unless anyone suggests otherwise). Not going to get a huge amount of time for photo's anyway (work stuff), but it will be fun showing the other half photo's of my trip (oh look, there's the tiffany's store, didn't go in though...)

Advice greatly appreciated...

Take it on board the plane in your hand luggage. They're not funny about DSLRs.

I've been told before that you need to take proof of purchase with you for electrical items etc that could have been purchased out there on the cheap to make sure customs don't think your trying to pull a fast one if they stop you on the way back in?!

To hell with that - innocent until proven guilty... I'm not going to take proof of purcase for every electrical item in my bag out with me! If it bothers them that much, they can check the serial numbers.

Its not 100% proof but ought to cover the unlikely eventuality they get funny.

It is a good idea to take receipts for expensive items.
Have never been stopped but it instantly solves the problem.
Receipts don't weigh much.

Remember that UK airports have a 1-bag rule for handluggage which they're very strict about. It's OK to stuff your camerabag into your hand luggage bag as long as it's all within the overall size limits.

Not sure when you last flew but parents went away a few weeks ago and said the airport really didnt give a f. Everyone had lighters, loads of bags in their hand luggage, etc etc... just seems like a joke after previous "issues"....

Cheers guys, haven't flown for almost 2 years and what with all the fuss in the last few months I thought I'd better check it out.

Now, any recommendations for places to visit/avoid in New York? :D

I have flown to the US with a Lowepro Computrekker AW containing my 350D, several lenses, a tablet PC and my video camera - never had a problem with either customs or the airlines.

Cheers
