I am in the market for a digital SLR and have been offered a second-hand Nikon D100 with MB-D100 and AF 28-100mm 1:3.5-5.6G lens. He hasn't given me a price yet but I suspect it to be approx £500.

I currently have a Canon Ixus SD750is but I am wanting to take indoor photos of gymnastics. The Canon does not allow me to fix a high shutter speed that is required for the fast action.

I don't have much experience in SLR's but used to have a 35mm Minolta SLR about 10 years ago.

Will the D100 be a better choice overall compared to the Olympus E-400 kit on offer from eBuyer?

You might be better to get a body and a fast prime for that sort of indoor work. That zoom might be a little slow when fully extended.

A mini review on the lens here > http://www.naturfotograf.com/lens_zoom_02.html#AF28-100G ( Bjorn Rorslett is quite well respected ).

The D100 was a great camera in its time. However, it is now over 5 years old ( as a design ). Not the best low light performer either ( indoor gymnastics? ).

If you decide to go ahead, check out the number of shutter actuations to get some idea of how busy it has been. Open a recent picture in an EXIF utility ( like EXIF Viewer http://www.amarra.de/ ) and look at the picture counter ( in EXIF Viewer click 'More' and scroll down to 'Pictures (total)' ). I'm not sure of the specified shutter actuations of the D100 but it would probably be around 100,000.

Thanks for the advice, I tried to install amarra exif viewer but it failed on my Vista laptop. I installed Panda Exif Viewer but I don't see a field for "Pictures".
Going to try on an old XP machine.

At the minute it's looking like the Olympus may be preferable.

No, just checked and there is no feild showing for Pictures (total).

It may be labelled differently in the Panda viewer. If there's a section on manufacturer info, it may be hidden in there.

Not worth £500. I'd get a 2nd hand 20D for £400 or so.

£500 is overpriced for the D100. You can get a D50 which produces better quality images, especially in lower light when you need a high ISO for £350 with kit lens or around £300 without (refurbed).

I don't think you'll find the 28-100mm zoom "fast" enough for gymnastics work unless you invest in a flash as well.
