A college has just purchased a D50 with 18-55mm kit lens he's after a telephoto zoom to complement it. What's the recommendations? I remember people having good things to say about the Sigma 70-300mm macro but which the DG or the APO? or what about a Nikkor lens? I know nothing about sigma lenses or Nikons.

Depends on your budget. The Sigma 70-300 DG APO is a decent lens (nearly every Sigma lens is now DG, it just some marketing about being suitable for digital but makes hardly any difference, the APO is the important one to get, as the non-APO Sigma zoom is pretty poor), but if you can stretch to a Nikon 70-300 VR (£330) it may be worth it.

I should have thought that £330 is over the budget. Thanks for the info on the APO. Just looked up what the APO is looks like it's worth it.

I've got the Sigma 70-300 for my D50 and I'm pleased with it. That said I've just ordered a Tamron 90 for the macro side of things :)
