My 8-year old Rotel DVD player has finally given up its ghost. It has stopped working completely with all my DVDs, including those that it played many times before. So, I've given up and decided to go in for a brand new DVD player and need advice on the choice. There are some considerations as follows:

It has to be multiregion; I suppose all new players will be.

It has to recognise DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs and play them.

Most importantly, I have over 600 feature film DVDs (R1,R2, R4 and some R0) collected over the past 8 years and my new player has to be able to play all of them without problems.

A built-in facilty to record DVD movies from the television will be preferred. But I am thoroughly confused with the "DVD-RW" and "DVD+RW" terminology and don't know what to choose to suit my requirement.

I want a good make eg Sony, Panasonic or Pioneer, but it does have to be state-of-the art. My budget is £250.

HELP!!!!

I can vouch the quality for this too (I own the previous model)

Yup, I'd definitely go for the Panny. I have the hard disc version & it's superb  You don't need to worry about all that +r/+rw/-r/-rw/ram stuff, it'll record on them all (even dual layer).

Thanks guys. I checked with the local dealers and found that the Panasonic EZ25 was being replaced with the new EZ27 at £249.99 inc VAT. However, one guy persuaded me to choose the Sony RDR-HX525 on offer at only £10 more than the Panasonic, but with the added bonus of an 80Gb Hard Drive built-in. Since I already have a package with Sky Digital (not the Sky Plus), the Freeview facility of the Panasonic is of no particular advantage to me while Sony's Hard Drive would be useful.
