What sort of features are you looking for?
You can get a PC for like £75 but it will be crap! :)
with £600 you could get a pretty OK spec PC. more details needed

heh i didnt know what a 'workstation' was until i looked it up.
"A type of computer used for engineering applications (CAD/CAM), desktop publishing, software development, and other types of applications that require a moderate amount of computing power and relatively high quality graphics capabilities.
Workstations generally come with a large, high-resolution graphics screen, at least 64 MB (megabytes) of RAM, built-in network support, and a graphical user interface. Most workstations also have a mass storage device such as a disk drive, but a special type of workstation, called a diskless workstation, comes without a disk drive. The most common operating systems for workstations are UNIX and Windows NT. "
Hi, still not really answered my question.
Please list the kind of spec that you are after, or don't you know? I know what a workstation is btw I have built many :)
Are you looking for a Athlon or Intel CPU what is it for? if it is video encoding then P4 is best best everything else is better with an AMD.
Please write spec list or do you just want a web site to go look at PC?

TopCat is right, we really need to know what you want to do with it before we can make suggestions. What is the assignment?

sorry !
can be athlon or pentium, but preferbly pentium.
i just want a general workstation that isnt considered obsolete today, for under £600
im not gonna buy one, so all i need are links
do u know any good retailers who specialise in Server and Workstation systems ?
ive been to Dell but they are over £1000
A workstation is pretty much the same as a home PC just usually without things such as DVD drive or 5.1 speakers and sound card.
It all depends on what you want! If you are not going to be doing Video/multimedia encoding then the Athlon XP is a FAR better processor, the P4 is not anywhere close to it in all benchmarks.
As for people to buy from, you have two choices really. If you want one of the big companies (you will pay extra for the name) then Dell, or Mesh
if you are not bothered about the name then try some of the companies such as Aria.co.uk, Evesham.co.uk (?)
I would say you are looking for at least:
17in Monitor,
256mb DDR RAM at least (make sure you get DDR not SDRAM)
Athlon 1gig (if you can streck to it get an Athlon XP start speed 1.5Gb)
CDRW 16x upwards (if needed but they are VERY cheap now!)
Matrox or ATI graphics card (if you are not playing games then don't get an Nvidia)
Case with 350W or 400W power supply (AMD Approved)
If you have any more queries then please post them, and I will try to help. I build my own systems so should be able to answer anything.

Hi,
You can easily get a system for under £600 if you look in the right places.
Try this company, I have used them a lot in the past and the are really very good and nice prices. I have never had any problems with them.
Here is a system spec I would recommend

GIGABYTE DDR SOCKETA MAINBOARD
ULTRA FAST 40GB HD 7200RPM
128MB DOUBLE DATA RATE RAM
16X DVD-ROM DRIVE WITH SOFTWARE ENCODER

64MB GEFORCE MX400 3D GRAPHICS CARD
ONBOARD 3D SOUND
56K INTEL V.90 MODEM

GENIUS NETSCROLL MOUSE
650WATT SUB WOOFER SET
2X USB PORTS
ONE YEAR RETURN TO BASE WARRANTY

Tell them though to Swap the DVD player for a CDRW 24x (is the same price!) and the keyboad and mouse for Microsoft one (they will cost a little extra but believe me you will be SO grateful after you have been typing for hours at Uni!)
