View Full Version : Need Widescreen TV - budget £480
Finally decided to get a widescreen set. Have done a little research myself already but now not not sure what to do.
I want a basic widescreen with Nicam and 3 scarts. Not interested in any dolby surround pro-logic etc. I plan to try home cinema at some point (when I have enough money) so will buy an amp then.
Budget is £480 but I could stretch to £550 for the Samsung - anyone got one and say if it's any good.
Costco have a JVC 28" for £480 - is that any good?
Any other ideas gratefully received.

Could do a lot worse than the 28PW6006 by Philips.
Reviewed in this month's 'What TV + Video' mag and gets 4.5 out of five. Even when reviewed at the RRP of £500 they say you'd be hard pushed to find a telly with a better picture even if you spent £200 more. Better still, you can get it from www.unbeatable.co.uk for about £320 + delivery (without the stand, but the stand is pretty naff anyway)
Very nice telly indeed. I've got one and am really happy with it. An absolute bargain.

I've got the JVC that you're interested in.
It's a lovely set with a sharp picture to boot. The only downside is that the sound could be a little better, but as all the sound is sent via my amp then thats not a problem :)
As you say, it's got about three scarts on the back, plus another set of composite inputs on the front. Easy to set up and simple to use too.
A nice set, with some other fans of it on here too I think :)
The Philips 28PW6006 is on sale here (http://www.anything-direct.com/rm_direct/philips_widescreen_television.htm) at £324-00 including delivery (£309 + £15-00). If you require the stand it's an extra £50-00.
It saves you £23-40 over Unbeatable's price, once you take delivery into account. Anyone used this Anything-Direct (R & M Direct) web-site before?

Never heard of them. At least you're guaranteed good post-sales service with Unbeatable, which is definitely worth £20 of anyone's money.
If they're reputable though looks like quite a bargain!

Mr Flibble can you post the model number. JVC seem to have so many models which do slightly different things. Oh can you say if it does NTSC for my R1 discs?
John Jennings - thanks for that I will check this one out. I don't need a stand so It's good to see someone can sell a TV without one. Does anyone ever use the crummy stands that TVs are supplied with nowdays?

Be careful with the JVC product numbers. The JVC AV28WFT1EKS is the superb flat screen model. The JVC AV28WT5EKS is the not so superb curvy screen model
www.storeplus.co.uk are selling the flat screen superb one for £489.99 delivered, and the not so superb model for £403.99. But, interestingly, storeplus allow you to sign up for your own free, fully hosted storeplus internet store, which entitles you to be 'refunded' up to 75% of the profit margin. The whole process takes 5 minutes, costs nothing and works well for my wife! Suffice to say, she could get the superb JVC model for approx £420 delivered. Bargain? What do you think?? :D

I own the lovely flat screen version that TPF mentions :) With the flat screen, you get a cracking picture with no horrible light reflections bouncing off (like I did with my old television)
As for NTSC etc. Well, my player is R2 only, so I don't know. I think that the manual here (www.jvc.co.uk/download/television/ib_av28wft1_32wft1.pdf ) tells you if it can acccept NTSC or not. I think it does, but check out that link first to find out :)
Mr Flibble - thanks will check out the link.
But I'm confused now as the JVC is reviewed in this months Home Entertainment magazine. They've got it as a best buy but then slag it off for distorting vertical lines. The quote goes something like 'once you've noticed it you find it a pain to live with' THEN WHY RECOMMEND IT? (thats directed at Home Entertainment, not you Mr Flibble).
Have you or anyone else with the JVC noticed this distorsion?

Put it this way ZX81 - I certainly haven't got any cause for complaints over the picture quality :) Our Digital TV and DVD pictures come across lovely and sharp. Looking at my old 21" 4:3 telly I don't know how we managed without it!
Certainly no vertical lines on my set (although you just KNOW I'll be watching telly tonight thinking 'that picture looks a bit dodgy, funny, never noticed that before ;) )
Mr Flibble, apologies. I need to concentrate harder when I read an article. The TV they tested was the new model £800 (Sorry can never remember model numbers). So maybe the old one is O.K.

You could always spend £19 more and get the Sony KV28LS35.
Allders will price match www.krishav.co.uk who have it for £499. You should be able to find the thread about it in the bargain forum, it's probably on page 3 or 4 by now.

Thanks mate, I had a look in my local Allders on the way home but as I can't remember model numbers I wasn't sure if they had it. The cheapest Sony was £799. Off to check out the Bargain forum right now.

If the set you saw had curvy edges then thats the one, as the list price in Allders is £799. :D
If you can't find the post, Allders will price match krishav.co.uk @ £499 without a stand, or £599 with. Thats all the info you need, just buy 'What Video & TV' magazine and show them the krishav advert, or print off part of the website with the price & phone number on.
Assuming you decide on that TV of course. :)

I have been told that I can have a JVC AV28WFT1 as part of an insurance claim (to replace my broken Sony 25" 4:3 model)
Is this the JVC model that has been quoted as "superb" in this thread?
I bloody hope so!
Plus does anyone know of any reviews on the net?
Can someone please let me know how to sign up for your own free, fully hosted storeplus internet store on the storeplus website?

I believe this is the model that was superseded by the JVC AV28WFT1, but don't sue me if it isn't!

PS angel, you have to be specifically referred by an existing agent, but as the forums don't allow public referrals I'm not allowed to give you any more details. What a shame the forums don't have their own store and then they could earn lots of referral income. Would prolly pay for that new server in no time...

arggh - so many different model number = much confusion
I haven't got the telly you talk about hongkong - I've got the one that TPF mentions - the 28" Flatscreen model (JVC AV28WFT1)

Thanks for the replies guys. The tv in the review looks the same as the one I should be getting, but it is a Pro-Logic model. As long as the picture quality is good I don't care, as it will go through my amp anyway. When it arrives I will let you know if it is any good.
Cheers.
I am in the process of choosing a new TV around the 500 +/- 50 mark and I have narrowed it down to 4 choices...can you convince me which one to take ?
* drum roll * the nominations for this years TV purchase are...
JVC AV28WFT1 - good review all around
Panasonic TX28PL1 - good review but no anytime soon stock due to fire at warehouse
Grundig MFW70490/9 - currently on offer at unbeatable at 490 - 100Hz but no idea what it is like, can't find a review anywhere
Sony KV28LS35 - price match possibilty as mentioned above
so many choices....which one to buy...and your votes are ?
cheers

My vote is for the JVC - because I've just bought one myself and think it's great :)

I got my replacement tv today, the JVC AV28WFT1. It really is a great tv. Good picture (sound could be better, but that isn't a problem as it is going through the amp) and it's a really attractive set.
I would certainly recommend one, even if it has only been the first day.

Went into Costco today. They are priced at £458 inc VAT, but they didn't have any  :(

Get the Sony. :D
Both the 24" and 32" versions have been given great reviews in 'Home Entertainment' magazine. The KV28LS35 is reviewed in the latest issue of 'What Hi-Fi' - it only gets 3 stars BUT they are reviewing it as if it cost £850!, £499 is therefore a bargain for that TV.
Not sure if the other TVs above have these features, but the Sony has a picture rotation facility to correct any picture slant. You can also manually center an RGB picture if it's slightly off.
A cool gimmick is a feature called 'auto volume', it ensures the sound remains at a constant level when any adverts come on.

I've found the Sony 28LS35 for £499 (not including stand) at KrishAV and the JVC 28WTF1EK for £464.98 at empiredirect.com
Does anyone know of anywhere selling either cheaper?
I have a Samsung Plano flat 28" widescreen. has a really good picture and looks great too (hate the look of the JVC)
Price from QED was around £460 for the Nicam model with stand etc.....
