View Full Version : Movies you buy for the sake of owning?

I can think of many DVDs in my (small) collection that I've bought only to watch once, then shelve for months. Some I haven't watched properly at all. For instance, with half the Hong Kong Legends discs I tend to skip through the movie to all the fight scenes, watch a couple of the extras (usually the British Trailers, which are awesome) then put it away for all eternity. Perhaps I should be renting titles like Once Upon A Time In China rather than buying them outright.
With Forrest Gump: I've seen the movie a dozen times, and apart from watching a few of the (quite boring) extras I'm not compelled to watch it again in a hurry. Yet it sits on the shelf, a £15 'investment', and that's how I justify it. Yeah, there are several ace titles that I watch over and over (Bruce Lee movies, horror titles and comedy especially, plus a few wicked demo discs), but on the whole I feel I could live without half my collection. Anyone else occasionally feel the same?
(and I only have about 60 discs...how you guys with hundreds can live with yourselves :D having spent all that moolah is beyond me, unless you watch a different one every day or something)

i certainly feel the same. If i was truly desperate i could cut my 110 disc collection down to about 25, being the titles i actually watch over and over, including music titles.
But it's a collection like any other, i just keep it there to marvel at. And being DVD i can marvel at it for a really, really long time, unlike VHS etc...
I feel the same about Forest Gump -- i've watched it enough times by now, I just keep it for the sake of completism. And you never know i may get the mood to watch it again one day -- although it's become the kind of film i catch when it pops up on the TV. :)
"It's better to have a movie and not need it than need a movie and not have it".
That's all the justification i need:D

Ones in my collection that I've bought for the sake of owning are probably - Iron Monkey, Shawshank, Green Mile, maybe The Thing too.
I've only got about 60 discs myself though, and not TOO much dross in their either :)

I was just thinking this the other day. I have about 150 DVD's and if I really think about it. There is only a handfull that I watch alot. But having said that, if I got rid of something I haven't watched for ages I can gaurantee I would miss it and suddenly 'need' to watch it!
So as Robby said, its better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
At the end of the day its a collection/hobby like anything else. My aunty collects shaving mugs?! and has hundreds. At least with DVD there is some entertainment to be had!!

I definitely fit into this category. A part of me wishes that I could exercise more willpower and cut my 150-odd collection down to less than 50. But it's soooooo hard to part with some discs - even ones that I know I'll probably not watch again for ages - if ever.
I've even bought/replaced discs that I previously traded on these forums, just coz I liked having the disc in my collection. It's insane; I was never this obsessive about VHS....

I think there is probably an element of this in all but the most die hard of DVD collectors. I try to ask myself a simple question before I purchase a disc "Will I watch this film once or more than once?" Once and I rent it, more than once and I buy it.
There are a number of discs in my collection that I keep thinking I should get rid of, discs that I bought simply because they were cheap. Now I look at them and feel like they let down the whole collection.
John Carpenter's Vampires anyone?

Any film where Sheryl Lee gets tied to a bed naked has a place in my collection :D
I used to be like this and my cd music collection. During my teens and 20's I just bought anything and everything I wanted - spent thousands. Now in my 30's with a mortgage I look at these ranks of cds and think 'what a waste, u selfish prat'.
I rent dvds atm and haven't bought one yet.
Save up for a house - buy it - sell it 2 yrs later and go on a cruise with the profits.

All my DVDs are bought for numerous viewings. Anything I want to watch once is usually thru trades.
Trading is much cheaper than renting.

Always thinking about this, what ones to keep what ones to get rid of. At the mo, trying to get the best prices for the Ultimate Mummy collection (Unwanted xmas present, used to have this already but i've finally woken up to how bad the films are)
Agree about The Thing (good film but not really a rewatchable movie).

I often feel the same, but I think of it in other ways. When you buy a DVD you buy into the statua of 'owning it' and the ability to say "Oh yeah, I have that movie". It's more than just a movie..... but It's a damn expensive way to gain self-indulgence.
I'll shut up now.
I am exactly the same, but I've actually gone to the extreme of having a clear out every few months, which usually keeps my collection size under 60.
The one disc I regret selling is the Unbearable Lightness of Being Criterion, because I've just read the book (well, before starting Lord of the Rings :))and wanted to watch the film again. Here's hoping it's re-released through another studio...
Then again, you can make a profit out of selling unwanted discs. I bought Fight Club R2 for £15 when I worked in V.Shop - my copy is going for £19 on eBay as we speak, with 7 hours left... :D

250+ and counting. I don't trade or sell. But about 50% of the collection will be rewatched within the year, I could do without some of the guff I got in the plight to get bargains on the bargain forum, therefore I don't follow all of them. I get what I want (and that's hardly any US or UK releases).
my problem is slightly different.....I decide "I'll watch a DVD" so I mosey on over to the DVD cabinet....marvel at the beautiful things in the cabinet on the wall, open it.....and then sit there, looking at my 200+ collection not being able to decide what to watch....I honestly think my DVD player had more of a workout when I had 20 disks rather than 200 as there was less choice and it was easier to decide what to watch, now I can never make my bloody mind up
