Are ukeleles sold as right- or left-handed? Since they are symmetrical I assume all I would need to do is string one the other way around. Correct?

How much does a half decent one usually sell for?

I went to look today and the half decent ones came in at just under £100. That's much more than I'm willing to spend, my friend told me he got his for around £50.

I got this one from eBay for about £20.. nice sound, lovely to play, stays in tune.. and they had lots of colours :D

what it's important to look out for in a cheap uke is that the tuners are geared rather than open. open (or 'friction' as they can be known) tuners, in my experience, are awful and not worth bothering with. as soon as you get the string tuned, there's no tension holding it in place, so it goes right out of tune again. geared tuners are much better and less frustrating.
geared tuners look like this:

Mine cost about £30.
Although I would much prefer a Formby style banjolele, they sound MUCH better.
/suddenly finds himself with a strange urge to buy a Uke!

My mate bought a blue one of those Maholo ukes for £12 from a local music shop, so it's worthwhile looking locally and not just going on the 'bay.
Ukes are awesome :D

I had a Martin Uke a couple of years ago - don't know why I paid that amount of money for a Uke, but I love my Martins :D
Check out Jake Shimabukuro (http://www.ukuleledisco.com/jake) for excellent playing.
