Hi all,

I've just finished watching series 1 of The Wire. It's been the best piece of TV drama that I have ever watched. Play still has series 2 for £17.99. Is it series 2 as good? I thoughtt that series 1 kind of wrapped up most things really well. Even if its not as good, I presume that it will be better than most TV dramas?

S2 is actually better than S1 and S3 (I haven't yet finished S4)

you should definitely buy it

Series 2 continues a great deal of the plot from S1 as well as adding in an entirely new case. It's terrific.

Well worth buying. New plot, but plenty of storylines from season 1 continue and season 2 merges into season 3. It's some of the best tv ever produced.

I think S1 is the stand out season; all 4 are excellent though

Best program on TV imo. I've watched al 4 seasons and virtually every episode is a cracker.

I recently got to the end of season 2. Good, but I think I preferred season one with just the one main plot running through it.

One question about the end of season 2's story:

What happened with the 'leak' in the FBI office? - I didn't really understand if he did or didn't work for the FBI - I assume he used to work for them but got transferred, yet somehow managed to keep his PC access and phone contact??? I thought he would then become the main target for the investigation, but it just seemed to drop off the radar in the season

The Greek was more valuable to the FBI if he stayed put rather than being taken down by Baltimore p.d.

I recently discovered The Wire myself. Season 2 didn't impress me in quite the same way as Season 1, partly because I was used to the set-up, and partly because it's rather wider in its focus. The Barksdale subplot is very good, but not entirely relevant to the new case which the detail is investigating. At times it's like watching two shows at once.

Still, like the OP said, even if it's not quite as good as S1, it's still far better than most TV drama. Well worth £17, and it left me wanting to see S3. Just need it to come down in price a bit...

Actually, my main problem with S2 is this: compared to S1, it's a bit... I dunno... cheesy. McNulty and Daniels get their old jobs back. Good ol' Bunk joins the team. The detail becomes a permanent unit. In S1, nothing seemed to go according to plan; the detail were stabbed in the back by their superiors at every opportunity. This time things go relatively smoothly; it's perhaps a little predictable and sometimes feels like a crowd-pleasing exercise.
The Greek was more valuable to the FBI if he stayed put rather than being taken down by Baltimore p.d. I just assumed the guy at the FBI was corrupt, but your explanation makes a lot more sense.
Coo, look at all these black boxes. Isn't it mysterious? :p

Season 2 does concentrate on a completely different community (seasons 3 & 4 return to the original 'hood and provide some resolution to some elements in season 1).

If you've grown really attached to the criminal characters in season 1 - you'll miss them in 2. The cops remain though. Personally I loved season 2 - but it is different in feel and slightly tangential to the rest of the series (so far?)
