I own restored widescreen versions of Superman: The Movie, The Goonies, The Terminator, Ghostbusters and Army of Darkness. They sit alongside such foreign films as Shaolin Soccer, La Haine, Ring, Iron Monkey and Battle Royal, all in their original aspect ratio. My copy of The Evil Dead is uncut and features hilarious insight that my old VHS copy never could. I can watch Batman: The Movie from 1966 in widescreen, while listening to my heros exchanging quips. By some magic, I am able to see Bruce Lee's intended ending for Game of Death, and his extra footage for Enter the Dragon. Straight to video release Drive is revealed to be really rather good, and worth of a theatrical release (in my opinion). Mixing one's own Beastie Boys music-video turns out to be great fun, courtesy of Criterion's great release of their Video Anthology. Oh, and I can now impress my kung-fu crazy friends with knowledge of martial arts movies which surpass The Matrix, some directed by the very same coreographer (or, in fact, his brother).
For me, none of this would be possible without DVD. How many regular VHS owners can say the same?
