Hmmmm plasmas...

The Good

Very aesthetic
Perfect Geometry
Large Screen Size Possible without dominating the living room
Progressive Scan
All manor of (most) connections
Ability to display HDTV images
Can be used as a PC Monitor

The Bad

Pricey
Often no scart inputs
Contrast not as good as CRTs, Blacks can look grey
Can suffer from screen burn
An emerging technology, so likely to get both better and cheaper in the next few years

The last point is obviously a good point in some ways, but bad if you are thinking about buying one now.

No SCARTS? Excellent! Must buy one.
The SCART/PERITEL/EUROCONNECTOR thing is the Work Of The Devil (or the French). It is unique to Europe and is the Worst Thing To Happen To Video Ever.

We bought 40 at work about three years ago and used em at exhibitions. Their life was over after two years and most of them have been chucked out. We have one in our office for DVD watching purposes and the picture is pretty poor really. Black is grey and you get allsorts of artefacting and colour spillage. Fujitsu's I think. The new ones are meant to be much better.

Well IMHO it's better than S-Video,at least it can handle component (RGB) video.

You can connect RGB or Component without using a SCART. There is no substiture for high quality RCA or BNC (or various other) connections.

I'm not criticising any signal protocol, I'm just criticising those stupid 21 pin plugs and sockets.

Anybody who has:

had reversed stereo
had unwanted loopthrough effects
had unwanted crosstalk effects
wanted to route their video signal via an external device, such as a scaler, macrovision defeater, standards converter
had or wanted any other slightly "non-standard" setup

would, I suspect, tend to agree.

I agree scarts have their problems and RCA phones are much better.

However, that doesn't get around the point that a lot of UK equipment such as digiboxes require a scart to get a decent RGB picture. I know some of the Fujitsu plasmas will only take RGB through a D-Sub input which is completely incompatible with a scart lead. The only choice then is to either use composite (great!) or buy an RGB to S-video converter (more cost and slight quality degradation).

I thought that Plasma did not suffer burn in.

I'm afraid they do. They use phosphors to generate coloured light just as CRTs do. It is only the way in which the phosphor is energised that differs. And it is deterioration of the phosphor with use that causes burn in.

LCDs and DLPs are the only display devices that are virtually (but not totally) immune ie the length of time it will take for these to become affected is likely to be much, much longer than phosphor based devices.
