Hello all!
Has anyone seen this film yet?
Hopefully it'll be as good as Toy Story (1 & 2).
Trailer looks good but then they always do!
Cheers, Paul.

I've seen it and will be posting my review later tonight (I hope - just have the proofreading to do). It's very good, but I didn't think it was quite as funny as the two Toy Story films and Bug's Life. Still - I wouldn't have missed it!

That's weird - in my opinion, it's the best thing Pixar have ever done.

I could go on about the thrilling adventure sequences, or the hilarious script and performances, but what impressed me most was the genuine, unforced sentiment that emerged. It didn't end on a gag to set up a sequel, nor a big song-and-dance finale, but stayed low-key and so, in the end, was rather touching and genuinely uplifting. And not a cringingly crap tear-jerker song in sight.

What he said. Randy Newman is conspicuous by his absence, which can only be a good thing. An all-round great film and I for one can't wait for the usual great Pixar DVD package.

Saw this yesterday, and was a little disappointed. Thought the start of the film was great, as well as the last third. But for me, the whole thing lagged quite badly in the middle and I found myself looking at my watch a couple of times. It's good, but could have been better.

Thought the Pixar short at the start though was fantastic though!

I've seen it about 3 times now, and even though it does get better with repeated watchings, the story itself is not as good as Toy Story, and the opening credit sequence is ridculously bad and annoying.
Admittedly there are no tear-jerking songs, and the animation is incredible, but like other people, I felt that it did drag on a bit and one scene is inserted in there for no reason at all apart from spreading it out to last over an hour.
It does leave itself open for a sequel so hopefully that will be better if its made, judging on the fact that Toy Story 2 is better than Toy Story 1.

That is correct, and the release date for R1 is 15/10/02. Yes thats right - October!

jeez! I'm sure it was previously something like April - although I'm guessing now that that was just an estimate then!

Plop - I was looking forward to a nice R1 release soon after the cinema release here.

I liked this. Maybe not as good as the toy story films, but certainly better than A BUg's Life. The animiation was excellent. Especially Sully. And Boo, turned out incredibly cute and I was impressed with her cos I thought she would be really annoying. And there were some genuinely touching moments in this that I loved

Just saw this last night and was quite impressed with it. The imagery is wonderfully detailed. While the film wasn't as good as Toy Story 2 it was definetly worth watching. Boo is absolutely adorable. I must admit I cringed through the outakes at the end. Some of the outtakes were funny but were ruined by the "actors" laughing, it just didn't work.

What did everyone else think of the For The Birds short? I loved it, pure genius :)

Loved it! Great gags ("I'm taking her to a monster truck rally"), great visuals, great gags - whatever those Pixar boys are on, they should pass it around to the rest of Hollyeood IMO.

Monsters inc was montastic, definatly up there with the rest of there output. That little girl boo was so cute just like my 4 year old daughter(who also enjoyed it.).The opening short was just pure movie magic, shame about the r1 dvd release not out till october(is this really true, hope not:( )

me and my mate saw this yesterday and we both absolutely loved it!

IMO this is the best thing that Pixar has done so far, some great gags, was very exciting at times and i thought Boo was adorable in the film.

It had some really touching moments without being too sentimental as well.

I had to laugh, at the end of the film i heard some women talking to her husband about it and she was saying 'I can't believe i cried at Monsters Inc!'

Also during the film this young child sitting on her/his dads lap scared the crap out of me (around the same age as Boo in the film). Whilst watching the film i heard noises behind me, thinking it was Boo in the film, and then all of a sudden i felt tugging on my hair, i nearly crapped a brick and turned around seeing this little kid smiling at me!!

I'd also have to say that the short before the film was very good as well, wish that they would do this more often for other films.

But no matter way you look at it, whether you like this more or less than other Pixar films those guys really are brilliant in anything which they have done so far.

More Hollywood studios should take note.

I saw this this evening and enjoyed it very much. I didnt think it was quite on a par with Toy Story but it was certainly very good and very funny. Although it seemed to be aimed more at children than T/S & T/S2.

Animation was top notch which you would expect from Pixar and the movie moves along very quickly.

All in all a top movie from Pixar and I will certainly be looking forward to picking it up as soon as it's available. :)

[Dan's belated review for Monsters Inc.]

Monstropolis needs power, and this is supplied by the screams of young children. Sullivan (John Goodman) is top scare-mongerer, aided by Wazowski (Crystal) and envied by his rival in the monster stakes, the shifty chameleon-like Randall (Buscemi). A door selected from the factory floor of Monsters Inc. takes them through a childs bedroom closet into the real world. But the monsters fear contamination from these children, and one day a little girl escapes into the world of Monsters..
Excellent movie. Better than Shrek? Probably not, as this is not trying to be savvy or hip or subversive..to be honest it’s not a fair comparison as they may feature monsters and are CGI, but are completely different movies. Monsters Inc. is heart-warming and thoroughly enjoyable, and comes whole-heartedly recommended, especially to those who enjoyed A Bugs Life.

I'll have no hesitation getting this on DVD.

Saw this on Saturday night, and loved it. Thought it was better than Bugs Life and on par, if not better than the Toy Story original but not quite as good as Toy Story 2 - which really would have taken some doing though.
Comedy wise, it probably lacked the range of supporting characters that the Toy Story series have - Hamm (John Ratzenbeger in his 4th Pixar Pic!), Rex, Slinky, Jessie, Mr Potato Head, Mrs Potato Head (For the Monkeys, of course!!!) and Bo Peep et al; but yet the story was probably better for it.

Anyhoo.... See it if you haven't, and count down the days 'til it's out on DVD. (but I don't wanna wait 'til October, I want it now!)

i reckon it would be fine to take your son to it.

Very funny and i cant really think of anything which would really scare your son in it, in fact he'll probably be laughing too much to notice it :D

Also i definitely think Monsters Inc, whilst being very good, was aimed at a lower age than Toy Story 1 and 2 where.

I'll go along with most opinions that it's not "quite" as good as Toy Story 2, although I think it's because we know the characters in TY2 more.

However, I don't think it's better than Shrek (Sorry Dan). I thought Shrek was magnificently overhyped. I mean Shrek was ok but it left me feeling "is that it???". Monsters Inc. was much better in storyline and characters.

Just my opinion, feel free to destroy it :D

I liked both of them to be honest, and I'll be getting Monsters Inc. on DVD. For CGI Toy Story 2 (and possibly A Bug's Life - soft spot for that) beats both of them though my personal favourite animation ever is Beauty and the Beast.

watched this today with a group of about 15, half yongsters, half teenagers, boys/girl, and i think i was probably the only the one who truly liked it... the guys didn't really like it, and kept saying 'it's not as good as Toy Story, which wasn't really that good' yadda yadda... 'it's not that funny'... and the extreme of 'it's *******.. the outtakes were the only good part'.... and the girls would only say it was cute, most likely down to Boo and the bright colours. But overall there was a feeling of dissapointment from everyone, bar one or two...

I kinda felt sorry for them... i think they went into this film expecting a laugh riot or something, there aren't many laughs, though it's a very humourous film and i had a constant smile plastered. And i'd definately say this film is more aimed towards the younger audience, which i think Pixar sort of lost a bit with their Toy Story films, especially the sequel... i find children much prefer Bug's Life actually...

In some respects Mosters Inc. is Pixar's best... forget the technical aspects, which i found literally flawless, the sound is simply 10/10, and the quality of the CGI is by far the best i've seen!! But the visual design of this film is not only Pixar's most interesting, but of any recent animation, set in a parrelell world, the production team have gone crazy with insane bouts of visual inspiration, there is barely a minute that went by that i didn't find something to marvel at!!

The storyline, i felt was excellent, the whole idea is priceless, but the father/daughter theme between Sully and Boo is for me the heart of this film... it's done in a very traditional way, simple but very, very effective. Boo is simply adorable, and undeniably adds to the overall charm - you really just want to pick her up and cuddle her. Imagine your typical story about a father who decides to take a part in his child's life, or any friendship really, but disguised behind crazy disney colours, and surreal images. Something about animation tugs at my heart strings much more, because it's more of an expression than a reality, and i don't know but if i wasn't at the cinema seated next to a stranger, then i would have definately needed a tissue during this film.

my god, that bit when Boo opens the door, and goes 'Boo!' it made my heart sink! and the final image as everyone is saying is truely endearing... "kitty!!".... "boo?" i'm choking up just thinking about it!!

The 3rd act is really very good, and reminded me of the great surreal Tex Avery cartoons. The film's structure is note perfect. Maybe a few more laughs would help, but it's still great entertainment.

I'd probably say this is my personal favourite Pixar offering, which adds to an almost flawless roster. My only comment would be the film shouldn't have included the outtakes straight after, i reckon the film would have ended perfectly on that last scene, then fading to black.

8.5/10

Did anybody else notice the Toy Story 2 character?

Right at the end of the movie, Boo is showing Sully her toys - one of them is a 'Jessy' Doll from Toy Story 2

The only bit that annoyed me was

I thought the ending was a bit of a copy of the Toy Story 2 ending - just the huge room with all the doors felt very similar to the baggage sorting room in the airport at the end of TS2

Still a great film :)

A quick thanks to Mr Woo. Took my six year old and three year old, they both loved it, the scariest part for them was the Scooby Doo trailer before the film.

Tip for anyone going to see it; watch the end credits and "out takes".

Went to see this on Sat night. A 9.30pm showing, not a single young kid in the whole screening! Really enjoyed it. Personally I am not going to compare it with Ants, T/S, T/S2 and bugs life as I have enjoyed all of them.

The short at the start like every one else has said is brilliant. The film overall was excellant (imo) and the out takes at the end were ok. especially fought the cameo in the out takes with Rex from T/s was amusing.

Some what miffed about the dvd release. Would like to have it sooner. DElayong it for the Xmas period no doubt :(

Are the kids really digging it? I saw it in a showing with tons of kids and they made little to no reaction. There was nothing like the hysteria to the Toy Story films.

However, the (justifiably) critically slammed Just Visiting had the kids doubled over from start to finish! I aint kidding. Even the Jimmy Neutron trailer got a bigger response than Monsters Inc! Odd.

Well I went to see Monsters Inc last night and thought it was very good - gorgeous animation! - But I fear they've made one mistake with its presentation... That short film at the begining was quite simply the funniest short I've ever seen!! I nearly died laughing! So when the main feature began it just couldn't match "For the Birds" for shear out and out LAUGH factor...

Nice to see Fox's "Ice Age" trailed before the movie - this, although Computer animated, looks to have taken a more stylised view than going for a "realistic" one, the backgrounds in particular look very Warner Bros Looney toons style - can't wait!!

At first I didn't want to knock the credability of Toy Story - but what the hell - I think this is slightly better than TS.

I thought it was funnier and a more entertaining. Not a tear jerking song in sight. And that subtle ending was just perfect.

I hate it when people dismiss the likes of Monsters Inc and Toy Story as kids movies cus they're not (that would be underselling them), they're family films - and brilliant ones at that.

Long live Pixar...

The_Evil_Dean

The kids in my showing where underwhelmed also ....which was surprising and I must say the film was good but it felt lacking somehow I cant put my finger on how though.

The ending is great ( not giving anything away ) very nice little ending there.

It was no toy story thats for sure but it was better than shrek which after a second viewing just seems cynical towards Disney which admittedly the mouse house does deserve fun being poked at it ....but maybe in a true adult cgi film ( that would be fun )

obviously Monsters Inc was not aimed at me ( an overly critical 19 year old ) but it does have its moments and it did "get me" in one of the sentimental bits ...im talking welling up of the eyes almost tear worthy.

Good clean fun 3/5

Saw Monsters Inc. last Saturday and loved it -- got to disagree about the opening sequence though, which I thought was a lovely nod to the old Disney "animated sound" shorts. Got me all choked up at one point too :o

Wasn't too impressed with the trailer for Ice Age though; the bits at the beginning and end made me laugh, but I found the bits inbetween were distinctly underwhelming. Same goes for Jimmy Neutron too, but without the laughs.

I have to agree with most of the other views on here. I did, however, think that it was aimed at a younger audience than the T/S films. It was much more of a visual gag based stroy rather than clever witty/ multi levelled comedy in T/S, with the exception of the line "Don't worry it's lemon".

The animation is amazing, for example where Sully is out in the snow and the wind is running through his fur, the texturing and colors are perfect. One other point to note, it had a very good "ambient" sound track - but then I guess we have come to expect this from animated films.

We took our 3 year old to see this last Saturday & she's come away from it Boo mad. I have to say it was a masterstroke not haveing her speaking proberly thus avoiding turning her into some street smart kid. It also made her seam more vunarable. A big well done pixar!

I thougth it was great to however I have had to watch Toy Story 1 & 2 hundreds of times, and still enjoy & look for something new in them, weather Monsters Inc hols the test of time Ill have to wait for the dvd relase.

I dont mind waiting untill October as I know it will be worth waiting for. At least they are not bringng out a dvd within 6 months, only to be replaced by a SE 6 months later.

From the creators of Toy Story comes Monsters Inc in which Monstropolis needs the screams of children in order to generate power. Sulley (John Goodman) is the top scarer along with his one-eyed assistant Mike (Billy Crystal) in which they go through doorways into the closets of children’s bedrooms.

Coming second to Sulley is Randall (Steve Buscemi), who tries to beat Sulley to top by any means necessary. One night Randall is caught cheating in which a child escapes into the Monsters Inc building and chaos ensues. The monsters believe that if they have contact with a child it could kill them. The CDA (Child Detection Agency) is then in hot purist of Boo with Sulley and Mike trying to protect her from them.

The film has a real light-hearted appeal, so children will love it. The animation is superb from the variety of different monsters, right down to the hair on Sulley. The characters are loveable so they don’t make very convincing monsters. The story is very good and it’s also very funny. Watch out for the gags, there’s one taken from The Right Stuff. While not up to the standard of Shrek or Toy Story, it’s definitely worth a look. Wait for the outtakes at the end, they’re also very funny.

My kids liked it and for a 2 year old to sit still through a film it must be doing something right.

This is a film that really works. The plot is original, the design flawless (including the best title sequence I've seen in a long time) and the voice cast on top form. Unlike a certain other computer animated feature, it doesn't rely on popular culture in-jokes and is all the better for it. I think this may be a keeper on DVD.

Hmm looks like I'm in a minority but I was really quite disappointed by this movie - yes the film looks gorgeous and is quite touching at times, but I think it lacks the sharpness and hilarity of a Bug's life and Toy Story 1/2. Best bit for me was the "For the birds" short which was classic pixar! No doubt I'll buy the DVD though - perhaps repeated viewings will change my mind :)

Dear Mr Echo

I finally got to see this on Saturday and like pretty much everyone else here thouroughly enjoyed it. I'm not going to get into the "better than/worse than..." because all of Pixars features are virtually flawless so there is little point. Magnificent animation and art direction again raising the bar for others to aim for and an excellent voice cast.

Like New said I think one of the genius strokes was not having Boo able to speak properly. It (ironically) lent a level of 'realism' to her character - having to script a very small child would have probably led to saccharine instead of the genuine warmth that came through between Boo an Sully.

My four year old enjoyed it a lot, though she did watch the whole film with her fingers in her ears - it wasn't that loud!!! :)

And just to repeat Sonicmint - and a really important point - it is a true family film (like Pixars other features) - it is simply a good story well told and beautifully rendered.

And another thing... stick around at the end even after the "out-takes"... there's more!

Andrew
