Is this a mistype as I cannot find this deal on their website at all. I can find the e-value offer code but it starts much high at £599 with no option to reduce support & "only" includes a 20" panel?

It wasn't there when I clicked on the link, but searching for the value code in the top left found it.

Does anyone know how the 3 monitors (without spending +£250) compare?

Dell™ 20" UltraSharp™ Digital Flat Panel (2007FP)
Dell™ 20" UltraSharp™ Wide Aspect Digital/Analogue Flat Panel (2007FPW)
Dell™ 22" Black Wide Flat Panel (E228WFP)

The CPU it comes with is fine, I'd go for the HDD upgrade myself. 250->320 for 17 quid odd.

I'd upgrade the RAM to 2G, but not from Dell. I purchased a 1G stick on Ebay for £30 delivered.

Just received my 500G Seagate HDD from Ebuyer. Didn't come with a SATA cable, so need to purchase one of those.

This ia a fantastic deal for almost anyone.

I'd say (in my terms) that the base is 'entry level' and a bit restrictive but that won't stop me buying one beacuse I'll keep the TFT and sell the base.

(Not buying these from Dell obviously!)Pity they supply 2x512 with the base as I assume it has only 4 slots ie you're as good as limited to 2GB which I'd say is the minimum for a happy PC life with Vista.

Firewire cards cost less than £8 but I'm not sure I'd go for a PCI LAN wireless but if you do I'd say <£20.

Damn these forums...if you take another E520 base unit they are doing free upgrade to 2gb of ram, with 320gb hard disk & 19" dvi monitor it comes to a reasonable £599.

Is the 22" non dvi panel any good? I have a 17" Illyama dvi panel at the moment & would worry it would be a step down in quality?

Are you sure? According to Crucial this system needs memory in pairs, so an extra 1GB would be 2x512.

I'd be delighted to be convinced that's not the case as I just bought an E520 (the smaller monitor, bigger CPU and HD one that was on offer last week at this price).

Not really a gaming/film rig (360+50" HD plasma does for that), more of a designer thing, so i think 1600x1200 would probably be better for me than 1600x1050. Having said that, I never seem to use the full hight at the minute, and always want more lateral desktop space. Decisions decisons... damn you bargain forum!

Seems like a very tempting deal...

I bought a cheapie X850XT yesterday and had to remove the double-height fixing plate from the card before it would fit in the slot. This was due to the USB port casings being so close to the PCI-E slot.
If you take a look at the pic on this site :
http://www.retekdirect.co.uk/
And imagine the grill coming up and *just* hitting the underside of the USB ports. There was easily enough space for the fan casing though the exhaust is muffled by some of the metal of the case itself too.

Cheers,

Rob

The 22" monitor has DVI & Analogue inputs and comes with both cables. I'm 99.9% sure this is the same monitor I got recently with works computers after talking them into upgrading from a 19" or 20". I can't check the model number just now.
Can't comment on quality as I've nothing to compare it directly with.

I was thinking of doing this too - the monitors seems to sell on ebay for between £225 and £250, so even if you got £200 off the monitor this system seems a good deal for around £280 (or £230 if you manage to get the £250)

So I told him not to bother and I'll just order with monitor, sell it and therefore get the base for around £250-280 and he said hold on, I can actually do you a much better deal

System above, with 500gb hard drive, 2gb ram and a dvd rom (this after explaining I don't need a 250gb HD let alone a 500gb, and didn't need an extra dvd drive), for an outstanding £715 (with monitor)

I'm selling the brand new base straight away as I only wanted the monitor. I currently have a 17" Dell TFT that has served me well but I couldn't resist a cheap option of a 22" upgrade

the only option I modified was the Logitech cordless keyboard and mouse for an extra £37.60 seeing as it's £45 at Amazon :) so total price of £516.59

Dell are

you sure it's a good deal?, if you custom build to those specs it's £631.73 for me

Upgrade charge
500GB £44.62
DVDROM £17.63
1GB memory £70.50
Total=£132.75

so £132.75 added to £478.98=£631.73

and even so you can get a 250GB Hard Drive, DVD ROM and 1GB memory for a lot less than £132.75 ;). I'll probably upgrade it with my spare parts along with installing extra programs so it will be better than the original base unit when I sell it. In my eyes you are paying around £210 for the base if you take off £200 for monitor and £60 delivery which is a crazy price

I priced up the spec to build this PC and it's into the £600's so you can't go wrong at this price as even the standard base unit is at least £430.

My PC breakdown price of £475 below are rough guesstimate prices and this is without delivery which would be from multiple places if you wanted the cheapest and this doesn't include everything either

£90 processor
£30 motherboard
£45 Keyboard/mouse (upgrade)
£70 OS
£85 memory
£35 graphics
£70 hard drive
£20 case
£15 keyboard mouse
£15 dvd writer

so that's £475 without the monitor which is around £200ish ;) and I paid £516 with the 22" monitor

it's crazy as a few years ago you could save £100's building your own system, now you save £100's buying them and breaking them up

It's just that whilst the clock speed is a marginal 1.86Ghz over the standard 1.8Ghz, the FSB matches the memory at 1066Mhz [800Mhz]

Any techy bods confirm or advise otherwise?

Thanks :)

The only other difference between the 1st and 2nd cpu is that the 1st lacks the virtualization feature, this won't be a problem for most people.

It seemed such a bargain that I just got the go ahead to get my parents and also my sister one!

I can't believe that I've spent this evening ordering my family nice new PCs while I should have been planing the re-build of my sub-standard home-build!

Such is life.

Anyways, cheers to the OP for highlighting the re-listing of this bargain.

Hmmm got a phone call on my mobile from Dell about checking something on my order - hope it's not a cancellation or a major problem.

THey might have spotted that the no mouse £18 discount was a mistake - to be fair as i suspected it was. The message was shortly before 9pm but i only just got a chance to hear it and ring back but the teh support is closed.

Anyone else had the same ?

Funny you say that, just place an order and noticed the -£18 mouse (don't think it's been mentioned in the thread)

Anyway came to £495.44

Upped the HDD from 250GB to 320GB +£17.62, and the Graphics card to the X1300 +£17.63 and subtracking the £18.80 for "no mouse"

The no mouse thing, as that just appeared, or did the OP just miss it, oh....big thanks goes to the OP by the way

Won't be keeping the TFT....so if anyone wants that.....I guessing it won't be the only one on here :)

Thanks to the OP - just ordered.

The mouse option is still there but shows up as an incompatability with the standard keyboard.

You need to select the expensive mouse and keyboard combo to make it work which defeats the purpose.

Still, even with the mouse its a steal :)

Just ordered mine -sods law I also missed out on the mouse glitch (I noticed it but was busy at the time, and not drunk enough to hit order!) but if it is like the mouse I am thinking of it is actually quite a nice one with the back/forward buttons on the side.

Apparently the processor in this offers better value than the 6300/6400 which surprised me.

Now I need to buy another 1gb of RAM and probably another license for XP MCE 2005 because there is no way I am sticking with Vista! :D

The mouse isn't a glitch. You select it if you chose the more expensive keyboard as that come with a mouse. If you select it without the keyboard it warns you your building an incompatible system. And I bet thats why Powder got a phone call...
We actually went for the expensive keyboard cause we already have one and it's damn good!

My Dell just arrived; same as this offer but with 320GB HD, X1300, Intel 6300 and smaller (19") monitor for £479 (last week). All seems well built. Some room in the case for extra components (no IDE connectors though, so so much for my dream of re-using my old HD for extra internal storage). They've had some good deals this year - I spec'd this system at a couple of other places and each was a good £120 more at least, and some were + delivery too.

So now my order has gone ahead for the bargain price of £460.18 :)

Also for those of you having trouble finding the machine - have you tried just going to the Dell site, browsing to Desktops and then Entertainment Destops you should see the £479 machine listed as the E520 pc there - haven't found it by Evalue code myself and have just looked for it every time on the site right up until now

Yip PCI slot for firewire.

I put a Terratec Cinergy 2400 Dual Tuner card in mine and it uses the PCI-E x 1 slot. After *a lot* of faffing around with drivers, I found one that works well with Vista. These can be had from Pixmania (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(15797)a(60823)g(120943)) for 50 odd quid, which is a great price.

Cheers - think I'm going to take the E6300 processor upgrade as it has hardware support for Virtual Server, VMWare etc so that the virtual stuff (which I use a lot) should run up to 3 times faster. I gather the Virtualisation support is the only significant difference between the E4300 and the E6300 but it's worth it to me.

Bit of a kicker about only two spare PCI slots, by the time I put my two DTT TV cards in them it'll be full :( ... yeah I know you can get twin tuner cards now but I haven't needed one yet.

The spec says 6 USB ports on the back, but the pictures only appear to show 5 :?:

I run virtual stuff on two year old processors fine so the E4xxx will be just as good as those at it, it's just all done in software, that's all.

Yes always buy the minimum RAM from Dell. Crucial or sometimes even PC World stuff (they're actually cheap for some common chips) is fine for the rest. Crucial Memory (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-582776-10401721) always deliver within a couple of days :)

Usually the same with things like disk drives too, cheaper to add a second drive from somewhere else, although in this case the £17 upgrade to 320gb seems worth doing for the ease of it. Wouldn't go beyond that at Dell prices though.

I have the Pentium D (from 1 year ago - Dimension 5150), and purchased this one on 1st March when it first surfaced.

When idling or used for surfin both are equally quiet.

When used for Video Processing however, the fan spins relatively loudly on the older Dual Core machine, but is not noticeablay any louder than the surfin fan speed on this Core2Duo machine! (very very quiet)

Only downer is Vista. Its nice, very useable, opaque windows very nice, Media Centre is improved ... but it fails miserably to install/run most of my video processing apps. This is why I'm using it as my main surfin machine and still using the trusty Dual Core 5150 to do any *real* work.

Has a 10/100M Ethernet on motherboard, no firewire port BTW.

It is, but don't let Dell tempt you with their prices as they are highly inflated and you are better off doing it yourself once the machine arrives.

But wont that void the warranty.

Johnr
31-03-2007, 19:35
Because me and Vista don't get on that well at the moment :( (Too slow for not much gain from XP).

It won't void the warranty as Dell encourage you to perform upgrades on the system, just remember you didn't install it when it causes the system to fail ;)

Would either of the graphics cards on this be any slower than the ATI 9800pro that I have in my current three year old system (AMD Athlon XP2800+), I play Call of Duty 2 alot still and wouldnt want to downgrade, but I am very tempted at what seems like a bargain price. ?????? Thanks in advance.

But wont that void the warranty.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think Dell are fine with people opening the case. They even made it very easy to open (pull a lever on the top of the case, and the side pops open), and instruct you how to open the case and change components in the manual.

Would the standard CPU that comes with this be able to handle HD material smoothly ?

Mainly 720p, but occasionally 1080i/p

Also what would performance be like with an xbox 360 HD-DVD drive hooked up and connect to my LCD via VGA be like ?

Will handle HD stuff no problem.

Also, when using it with an XBOX 360 the 360 is doing all of the hard work, so no problem again.

Hi. This looks like a great bargain. Nice one Sammy709Sony930.

Dell are offering 7% discount before VAT and shipping as part of their Employee Purchase Program at the moment - search for EPP in the Dell website search box and it appears as a red special offer on the right hand side. Does anyone know whether this is meant to apply to all purchases on their website, or does it just apply to the selected discounts link which doesn't appear to work? I don't fancy ringing India at the moment and asking them.

Cheers,

Two questions:

1. Will this be better than the Dell Dimension 5150 with a 3GHZ Pentium 4?

2. Does it take the same kind of RAM?

I picked my old machine up on an earlier Bargain Forum thread, and am wondering whether it is time to upgrade...

well mine arrived yesterday. first impressions very good.

it's VERY quiet.

the monitor looks excellent. the backlight bleed is only noticeable if the screen is totally black. i guess if you plan on watching DVDs with a wider than the monitor aspect ratio it might be an issue for you. but in "normal" use its not noticeable

Vista as installed contains a ton of crap from Dell. I wiped the HD and set up the partitions as I wanted and did a clean install.
i'm liking Vista so far as well.

1. Yes, its Dual Core with more cache so for most things will well out perform the P4. Some games may not benefit but still will run as quick or quicker because of the extra cache and better design. Windows will run a lot quicker.

2. I don't think do, this takes DDR2 the P4 takes DDR. The good news is DDR2 is cheap to buy though, 2GB of very high quality RAM is about 100-120 quid.

It really depends what you want from it.

Most people I know using home pc's for either browsing/playing multi-media/gaming have gone for Home Premium.

There's a decent BBC article summarising it all - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4754462.stm

And anotehr useful sumamry - http://www.microsoft-watch.com/content/vista/whats_inside_the_six_windows_vista_releases.html

I did have a matrix linked from somwhere which was a pretty nice explanation of which things were possible with each version or not, but lost it when swapping jobs.

On my planned homebuild in a few months (waiting for next raft of processor price reductions and ATi gfx card arrival to drive price down there also), I'm going for Home Premium.

Well, I am just outside London and hope mine will be here in the morning. The tracking website states that they have an expected delivery date of tomorrow. I also guess that because its being sent to a work address that they won't call to arrange a delivery date/time.

Maybe you can go round their depot and get it if it's nearby? I think they are either part of TNT or they are TNT or they use TNT's depot (near here anyway). I know mine left the Coventry hub this morning so will be at the West London local centre some time this evening, and if for some reason they don't put mine out on the local delivery van tomorrow, I am planning to just go up there and collect it in the evening, the place is 24 hours anyway, save both them and me the hassle.

if my council are using 22" widescreen TFTs, I want some money back on my coucil tax!

personally, I think the monitor is excellent, but as I said previously, the only drawback would be the light bleed, but that is only noticeable when the screen is black. under normal desktop useage the monitor is perfect for me. i don't watch DVDs on my PC, but if I did I might reconsider. The extra size more than compensates, and give me so much usable desktop space at a good high resolution.

i switched over systems last night, and am now running this as my main system. one word of warning - i went to transfer my SATA drive from my old PC and noticed the clearence in the case for the HD and lead was not enough for my lead from my old machine. The Dell HD uses a right angled SATA lead, and if you are planning to put a second HD in there, you may need to pick one of these up.

i'm considering an upgrade to 2gb RAM. whats the cheapest online price for this? anyone done any searching?

The value 22" is nice but I'd say it's a 'council' monitor and not something I'd want to sit in front of all day.

Excellent thing to sell on Ebay for sure.

I think I will dump it and keep my new HP 20" then.. that seems a decent thing.

To those who have had theirs delivered; who do Walsh Western use as their local couriers - read TNT earlier in the thread. I have on numerous occasions picked deliveries up from the depot so i can set them up over the weekend. Mine left Coventry this morning just before 11am.

It's no big deal if it isn't possible to get it before the weekend but to find out i need to know where to phone.

Mine came via TNT, but others have said that a different courier delivered it. Keep an eye on the order tracking. A line appeared in mine saying what courrier and which depot it ended up with:

05/04/07 08:07 TNT - ALTON ORDER ON DELIVERY.

D'oh! System and 2007FP monitor delivered by TNT about half an hour ago, and about 10 minutes ago a nice lady from Dell called to say the 2007FP monitors are being recalled due to a faulty batch and they need to swap mine out! I've barely unpacked it!

I have discovered that the built-in SATA controller is hardware RAID-0/1-capable which may be of interest to some - not sure if it was mentioned in the spec or not. Personally I have turned this off (which means you have to reinstall but I was going to anyway) as I think RAID is too much of a liability in the home, but I know some people like to use it.

Also worth mentioning is that there is no conventional IDE controller (PATA?) - the optical drive is connected via SATA just like the hard drives, in case someone was thinking of adding an old DVD burner in or something.

I'm very impressed at the near total silence though.

Near total silence? Can you possibly record it in a quiet environment powering on as mine is of a moderate volume but I may be expecting too much

You need to turn RAID off if you're planning to stick a XP CD in otherwise you get a BSOD before the install even begins...There may be ways to integrate the correct RAID drivers into the installation but it is quite a lot of work.

I may try putting a PCI IDE controller in my system over the weekend as I could do with my Pioneer 111D burner

There is fan noise for a few seconds as it powers on, in common with all recent Dell systems, they all seem to do a fan test as part of POST, but it really does go virtually silent once that's done.

I have mine too now. Hurrah! Though it is all still in the box ;o) I just can't decide what to do over the monitor.

Does anybody here have personal experience of both the HP L2045w and this Dell monitor so they could comment?

Thanks ;o)

RAID 0 is disabled in BIOS but RAID 1 is available.

That's easily disabled in Control Panel ... Users. Then in the Security CentRE you can tell it to stop telling you that you turned UAC off.
