Awwwww No :(. I take it your daughter is very young, so you can't really blame her. I have a young daughter too and when they break things you just have to accept it. They know no better.

I think I see an insurance claim coming on though. If bought it on credit card, use that first else your household insurers should pay provided you have AD cover. Say that your daughter knocked it over accidentally rather than squeezed it.

And I'd get the cover back on the other one shapish. It may not look so nice, but it'll sound better than the squished one.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Were these your 602.5's?

:(

I'm gutted for you (as the proud owner of 601S3's and an LCR60S3)

I assume you can claim on your house insurance?

Grilles on in the future then (which begs the question of why B&W didn't use silver/grey grilles rather than the black ones)

You could try and get a refund or replacement, you may not get much it depends how old she is.:D
HA HA

It's part of the learning experience you can choose nice things or kids, I'll keep my kids for now.

My daughter is 3 and a half and actually very good with things around the house. She has been used to speakers since she was born and has never touched anything before. We have never moved ornaments or delicate things and have taught her fairly well what is acceptable.

I think the fact that these were new and shiny were too much of a temptation. Although I was at work, the wife said she knew straight away that she had done something wrong and kept saying 'sorry' to her mum.

Her punishment was no chocolate the following day. Since that day she has asked 'are you happy now daddy?' and 'I won't touch daddys speakers again' on several occasions.

I am 100% happy she knows exactly what she has done and would put good money she won't do it again. I think Grumpy you can have both as long as they are taught properly. There is no intention to put the grilles back on, the solid black looks bad in our room anyway ;)

As for cost, the dealer has quoted me £71 to mend it. They sold them to me for £510 so they are still cheaper than new full price :). They are 603 s3's BTW

Just to show you I still love my little girl, heres a piccie

Was just going to say that it won`t be too much for renewal.I recently inquired for parts for B&W speakers and it would have been about £50 to replace what you`ve damaged.

I'm quite impressed at what a comprehensive job she did. Centre of both domes. That takes talent!

Of course next time you threaten to stop the chocolate, Abigail can just remind you to keep it coming or the speakers get it...

Oh well maybe she'll think of that when she's four.

Just remind me to keep her away from evil twisted people that might put thoughts into her head ;)

Thanks for the kind comments :)

I have absolutely no more speakers! The last few I had have now sold to a friend, all of them helped finance the purchase of the B&W's. Trouble is I bought some, then upgraded. Bought some more and upgraded again. All the old ones went into the loft until I planned to use them again (maybe in an EX experiment).

Fell in love with the B&W's and therefore had to sell the old stuff. Virtually everything I have sold has been used for less than 3 months (some things have been used for less than a week!)

Think I might stick to these new ones for a bit now ;)

PS Hope your speakers are still running well? When are we going to see some pic's on the Home Theatre Picture thread? :)

They are running great. I got a Tannoy centre from radiohead and they sound really good.

As for the picture, I will get round to it but there is not much to see as my wife insists everything is hidden away in a pine cabinet but I will try and take one.

Aren't they just pretty dust caps really? Can't you just put the grilles back and pretend nothings wrong?

This is the reply I had from B & W.

Dear Mr Baigent

I am sorry to hear about your misfortune with your new DM603 S3
Loudspeakers. Both drivers, like in all loudspeakers are delicate, and im afraid to say to bring them up to full specification they should both be changed.

Although you may not hear any difference, they will not be performing to their optimum levels. Most importantly I would suggest changing the tweeter straight away.

The dust cap is fitted to the bass driver unit to aid dispersion at the crossover point. You could leave it how it is, but I would stress that you may hear distortion when the unit is working very hard. If you do not hear any distortion, then I will leave the decision to change it to you.

If you need to have them repaired I would suggest going back to the dealer you purchased them from as soon as possible.

If you have any further questions or comments, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Best regards

Plus, they look naff now and I can't put the grilles on coz they look crap :)

That's a very nice letter from B & W. It may as well read:

Dear Sir,

I am sorry to hear about your misfortune. Due to the fact that we at B & W, much like most other 'high-end' speaker makers pride ourselves with robbing our customers blind we suggest you get into as much debt as possible and buy a new pair.

(Before you say anything I already own TWO pairs of CDM-9T's!)

Like I said before the dust cap should do very little to affect the sound. Agreed the tweeter may be damaged. But I doubt if you could tell any difference between the mid and bass frequencies.

Looks like you need to get on the phone to the insurance company :(

The tweeter would definately need replacing(though probably only the diaphram). The mid/bass damage is only to the phase plug come dust cap and I would be amazed if you could hear any difference to that. But if I`d just bought them for £500 I would have to replace it.Psychologically it would ruin the sound if nothing else.
ps I`ll give you a tenner for the old mid/bass unit:D

Dunno if it's any help, but have you tried using a vacuum cleaner or a pin to pull them back into shape?

I tried, I really did try. Hoover was hopeless, tried selloptape but wasnt strong enough to pull so resorted to a pin. The midrange cone popped out quite easily but has a few holes in it from the pin and where it was originally pushed in. The tweeter is more like tin foil and won't pop out at all. It also has a biggish rip in it.

As they are so new I would want them perfect again, whether or not its going to cost. £71 + £510 is still less than the RRP and they are such good sounding speakers, its a small price in the end

As a parent of a 20 month old girl this was the dilemma I had when choosing a new TV

I really wanted the 42" Toshiba but went for the 36" in the end,

Now when I come home from work and scrape the tellytubby shaped dried on hard goo from the screen i'm glad i went for the 36" with the glass screen as opposed to the 42" with the plastic one:brickwall

Tempted, but I have heard they are unreliable. Apparantly they need constant maintenance for at least 18 years and in some cases, alot longer ;)

I guess I'm lucky my 3 have always been good around my stuff.
I have to agree with you about being able to have the best of both worlds (I was only joking before), like you said if they have been taught properly and mine know how to respect other peoples property but as you know accidents happen.
I would like to add your daughters a little cutie and you just know one day she will break your heart (I have 2 daughters 13 & 7, damm, they grow up fast)

Our 20 month old son loves to launch himself from one side of the room to the other and use our 33" Toshiba TV to stop himself hitting the opposite wall. The TV rebounds of the wall. If there is any sound associated with this unprovoked attack, it is drowned out by us shouting. "Jake, stop that now, you naughty boy", or words to that effect.

My 18 month old also uses our 33" Tosh to stop himself - and has the cheek to shout "CRASH" when he does it. Still, TV is 3 years old so by the time he's totally destroyed it it will be time for a new one.

Also, how many times a week is it possible to scrape chocolate, biscuits and dried milk off a TV screen before you wear it out?

Driver dustcaps = kiddie finger magnets!!

Been there and had that done to my tweeters, the grilles had only been off a couple of hours too.. :(

Went back on a bit sharpish I can tell you. :p

Managed to pull mine out with the hoover, and as long as her finger hasn't delved into the coil it should be fine. Must admit you do get pretty paranoid and start imagining hearing something wrong for weeks afterwards.. :p Since changed mine anyway - just to be safe. :D

Don't you start getting cold sweats when she grabs hold of your Pronto..?

:D

all i can say is  :brickwall  as the proud new owner of some 602.5's

My nipper done the same to my Sony Pascal's and the grilles had only been off for 10mins before he done it :( , hence the new 602.5 above.

My policy now is, Grilles off most of the time and grilles on when the nipper comes to stay! ;)

At least its not to pricey for a repair

That's a nightmare of mine ... and I haven't got any kids! My brother has four, so I do get a bit twitchy when they are visiting. Mostly worried about them knocking the 602s off their stands (despite my best attempts with blu-tack and spikes). I'm not allowed to leave the covers off mine though as my wife thinks they look spooky.

I would really resent paying £71 to mend them, but I guess the insurance thing is going to cost you excess-wise anyway. I would expect you could get the bits and do them yourself, but I have only had to replace a front panel (damaged in transit) rather than a whole driver unit (or two).

Hope you get it sorted to your satisfaction ... and let that be a salutory lesson to hi-fi-loving-anal-retentive-dvdphiles everywhere. I'll not sleep now having seen those pictures.

Imagine the horror though if you normally had the covers on and when you took them off, they were like that underneath
