View Full Version : PDN's 30 New and Emerging Photographers
I must admit to not having looked at this too closely, but I did see Brian Ulrich's name on there, and do quite like his stuff, so there you go.

Its a bit like the modern art thread in the general forum. Some of the photos in the link seem so basic that anyone without any technical ability could do them. The photo of the train carriage for example.

As she says "By recording and sharing these spaces, I aim to create a an environment in which people can recognise previously unarticulated notions of nostalgia and cultural identity" - that makes me think both of a first-class Pseud's Corner entry in Private Eye and also wonder whether there's some big joke going on with this sort of photography that I'm not in on.
That said, there are some very good photographers there indeed - but to my eyes this isn't one of them.
There's a couple of nice ones in there, as you'd expect, but there's some godawful dirge in there as well!
The couple of night shots on there look like they've been taken by someone balancing a compact on a bollard... awful.

This is why I sometimes think I don't "get" photography.
Some of the ones in there are superb, but some of them are pretty crap and anyone could easily shoot the same thing without having any talent or vision at all.
Ms. Beuret's stuff is ok in parts - but compare her shop shots with this one from one of my flickr contacts;
http://www.flickr.com/photos/bedlam/251724069/
To my eye Benny's shot does a similar theme, but with far more warmth and humour. (He also doesn't piffle on so, which is good).
Having looked through the selections a bit more, I think this is remarkable in that quite a bit of it is rather good, and some of it is very good indeed. I also wonder whether it's coincidental that the people who seem to be earning a living from this (those who are editorial photographers etc) are producing the work I liked best, by and large.
"Sometimes when you shoot in a museum, people follow you around and ask questions."
:suspect:
If I'm ever interviewed about my artist philosophies and the motivations behind my projects, I shall adopt a thoughtful, pensive-yet-traumatised expression, lean in close to the interview and whisper:
"I liek too click."

Without question Mr Monkey.
Check out the bint from Belfast's [or should that be Bangor? :suspect: ] website [as listed on the PDN link] http://www.victoriajdean.com/index.html
Am I missing something or are the majority of these completely dire? :gag:

youre right, they are dire unless there is some arty meaning to them that i just dont get. Some very good photos on the main PDN site though that i like. JohnC's contact from flickr should be on there as well.

 She got her qualification from where I'm studying. I think it says a lot for the standard of the establishment. :( I will say however that some of the students work I see in the halls is excellent despite the college.

To be fair on her, some of the stuff in "Nation of Shopkeepers" is a sight better than the examples PDN chose.
Edit: - just realised that we're no longer talking about Ms. Beuret, apologies for sending you off down a blind alley if you were looking for this in Ms. Dean's portfolio
Stu - Ben's well worth adding to your contacts - his portraiture is excellent, imo.

I wonder how they get picked for something like this

Marcus Nilsson comments "I'd rather make one perfect picture than 10 mediocre ones.".
That is proudly displayed under one of the most mediocre pictures of the lot!
I did like the pictures by Kathryn Cook, Aaron Huey and Alys Tomlinson.

Those Victoria Dean photos are, to me, what the **** is wrong with artistic photography. People trying to be conceptual and end up looking like absolute tossers - the fine art photography brigade (a degree that I'm ashamed to say I recently considered switching to) at my uni, recently exhibited a lot of their work in a gallery on campus... It's safe to say that most of the regulars on this forum could take better photos than them with their eyes glued shut, and a large man repeatedly kicking them in the balls.
