Reading the list of disc contents for the upcoming Season 1 collection, am I the only one worried that they state that "Encounter at Farpoint" is in two parts. Now when this was first shown in the States it was as a feature-length episode and only subsequent showings cut it into two parts. A downside of this is that several trims were made to the episodes in order for it to fit into the 1 hour slots that they had been given as is the usual case with these. So by issuing the discs with the episode split into two will we be getting the trimmed version, like was re-issued on VHS a couple of years ago. If so then I think we are once again being conned and it will be another case of a DVD being issued that is not the true complete collection.
Exactly why I'm not rushing out to pre-order these initial releases. I don't intend to buy these from any region untill I've read reviews confirming this issue and actually seen/handled either of the god awful packaging options.

For all friends of the longer versions of the pilot/finale-ST-episodes there is hope !
Today Mr. Torsten Nobst (Production Manager of Paramount Home Entertainment) has posted an answer on my question at the German DVD-Forum http://www.areadvd.de for which version of "Encounter at Farpoint" will be included on the planned TNG-DVDs.
He writes that all "missing" scenes of the two-part-movie have recently been translated / dubbed (this was the only two-part-episode which was never shown in the longer version in German TV or on VHS). This could only mean, that the pilot will be split into two parts, but with all scenes which where normally omitted in the two-part-versions !
The (German-language) thread:

My (German-language) homepage with more details on that scenes:

Sorry for my bad english,
Nick.

Flippin' eck! Over $100 at Amazon.com! I though the SRP was $100! R2 might even be cheaper at this rate.... good grief.

Personally I'm going for Region 2 this time purely because I think the packaging is much better, so I don't agree with the previous post about both sets of packaging being awful. Only Region 1 looks really poor, Region 2 is cool. The R2 DVD Project are reporting that Season 1 is being released on April 1 (Easter Monday) and this is the official date as given by Paramount. DVD.Co.Uk are pricing these box sets at £69.99 which in my view is a great saving and the one I've gone for. It also looks like the new series Enterprise is being launched on April 1 but only on VHS. The R2 Project seem to think that a DVD release in box set form will happen at the end of the year.

No, no, no. The R2 boxes look like a McDonalds breakfast box sprayed silver, albeit without the tasteless content. :) The R1 editions, if they stay as the pictures shown thus far look like technical manuals and will probably end up being far more functional and durable over time. Still, I'm waiting to see how the prices settle down with the R1 edition, and hoping R4 produces something special price wise.

Cervaro, I fail to see how cardboard packaging that’s been shown to deteriorate if you stare at it too hard (a la X Files) could possibly be more durable than hard plastic.
Personally I’d like to see more "real" pics as opposed to these hyper-slick CG renderings but I’m definitely leaning in the R2 direction even with the slight extra cost.

I'm not seeing any extra cost... look at the prices on www.dvdpricesearch.com and they all work out at more or about the same as the £69.99 dvd.co.uk want. I'm waiting to see what ********* and Play want for the R1 version, and if there's no improvement, It's R2 for me.

Today Mr. Torsten Nobst (Production Manager of Paramount Home Entertainment Germany) has confirmed, that the Pilot "Encounter at Farpoint" will be released in ist original form uncut as a "movie" insteed of two single episodes on the upcoming DVD-edition.
There was a lot of confusion because all press-releases mentioned two episodes with the numbers "101" and "102" insteed of the production number "701" for the feature-length episode.
Does anyone have pictures of the R1 Boxsets?
I'm debateing whether to get R1 or R2

Is it true the complete series' will be out before the end of 2002? £70 a month is a fair old outlay, if it's true...

I thought they were being released at the rate of 1 set every two months so as follows:-
Season 1 - April
Season 2 - June
Season 3 - August
Season 4 - October
Season 5 - December
Season 6 - February 2003
Season 7 - April 2003
If not then it could be a very expensive year for me as I am determined to get every set even the first two inferior seasons. By the way I think the boxes look really great on the Region 2 set, much better than Region 1 in my opinion.

Got the R1 box set yesterday from www.northamericandvd.com, £71.67 & no customs charges (they marked the package with a value of CAN$36).
Encounter at Farpoint is in a one feature length presentation (1h31m). Picture is a little soft & lacking in detail, but better on subsequent eps.
Sound is fantastic, an excellent remaster in DD5.1.
Hmm the R2 version seems to be going like:-
April 1 2002
June 1 2002
Whereas the R1 version seems to be coming out sooner that a month as follows
March 26 2002
May 14 2002
so judging from that i guess the next one will be July 2 2002
just a guess if there's a complete release schedule of R1 sets then please post it..

R1 as follows:
S1 Mar 26
S2 May 7
S3 July 2
S4 September 3
S5 November 5 (same day as X-Files S6  )
S6 December 3
S7 December 31
I've also got the R1 set and now I've seen actual pictures of the R2 packaging I think R2 will hold up better over time. See if I can sell the R1 set somewhere....

Well, I'm getting the R2 version for £60.99, and I get the warm fuzzy feeling inside that I'm paying VAT to boot :p.

Y'know we do have a Sister site that carry reviews :)
My review specifically covered the Encounter at Farpoint issue and is here
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=698&story=2904
If you can't be bothered to read it the pertinent line from the review is ...
"Encounter at Farpoint is presented in its original format of one long pilot episode running 91-minutes with 18 chapters. "
It is amazing the number of people that use these forums and don't realise DVDTimes exists :D
DVDConcept is not sending my Season 1 of Next Gen intill the official release date. That's the last time I order from them!

I feel that the source material (Film & NTSC) is better served by being carried on a NTSC format disc, STNG was the first occasion that I noticed PAL pitch change too.
I've no doubt that there are more places doing R2 for less than the R1 price, but at the time of ordering there were no cheaper R1 sources - as that's what I wanted thats what I bought:)
Fair enough, although if I could notice the pitch shift(sorry, never notice outside a "side by side" comparison, it would probably be the PAL version which would seem right to me, since thats the only way I've heard the theme tune outside the movies ;).
