It depends on the disc and the player - my old Samsung 807 played the French Last House on the Left without French subtitles, but my current Toshiba SD-500E insists on them.

And I thought the Russ Meyer titles on Fravidis also had forced subtitles until I discovered that if you just opted to play the film without going via the language menu you got unsubtitled English.

But I've yet to work out how to remove the subtitles from the French Last Seduction or Blood Simple without opting for dubbed French, and I've tried everything!

I'm having the same problem with the french Wings of Desire . The disk menus don't seem to give the option to lose the subtitles, but my machine wants to give the choice of subtitles on/off, but nothing happens.

It's worth trying a bit of returning to menus and general key prodding I've found..

There's a "hack" for getting rid of subs on the Spanish Blood Simple here (http://www.dvddebate.com/eastereggs.php?op=show&egg=50) which might help...

Incidentally - I never submitted that to DVD Debate - I just posted it here  - no prob as far as i'm concerned tho..

I have a Scan SC-2000 and I can't get rid of the forced Spanish subtitles on Braindead. It's so irritating! The only way I can remove them is switching it to the Spanish audio.

cheers andy, tried your hack on my spanish dvd of once upon a time in china and america, worked a treat, however presumably it will only work on discs with the sin subtitulos option?however,it does show that the subs on these type of discs CAN be removed, finding out how is the problem!
