Surprised this has been discontinued already. What about the PG50?
Panasonic 36pl30 if you dont want surround.
Toshiba 36ZP18 if you do (no DTS I believe) - i.e. the wizz-bang!

The Toshiba 36ZP18 is a fine TV, except many people have found problems with brighter areas around the edges. There's a humungous thread at a certain other forum concerning this TV and the people that are unhappy with it, although some people appear not to have a problem.
All 36" TVs have their problems though. Probably the most reliable is the Sony FS70, although it often displays some wierd lines travelling across the screen when connected by s-video.
I looked at all the 36" TVs and decided that image quality was more important than screen size, so I went for a Loewe Aconda, which (touch wood) has been near perfect so far.
If he really wants a big screen, how about one of the LCD projectors that can be picked up for about £2,000 now. Will a 120" do ;).

I have the Sony 36FS70 and I am very happy with it. Excellent picture and you don't get the blurring effect which some of the other makes have trouble with.
