View Full Version : TV/FM sockets in every room in the house ??

Hi all,

Ever since we moved into our house (6 years ago !!!) I have been trying to work out how the previous owner managed to have TV and FM sockets in practically every room in the house (especially every bedroom) ... but haven't managed to figure it out.

There is a TV aerial on the roof which feeds the Sky+ box in the lounge (via a length of co-ax which runs down the outside of the house). The 2nd RF socket on Sky+ is then connected to a co-ax cable which goes off up into the ceiling. A portable TV in 1 bedroom plugs into a aerial socket on the wall and picks up the RF feed from Sky+

The other 2 bedrooms each have a "dual aerial faceplate" (I have so far assumed 1 is RF the other is FM) but only 1 co-ax cable going up into the roof. But nothing can be picked up by a TV plugged into any of these 4 aerial sockets.

There used to be an FM aerial on the outside wall which we have since removed as we never needed it.

Whenever I have looked in the loft I haven't seen any sign of a "distribution box" but there is a TV aerial fixed to the chimney stack.

For those who have understood this rambling post .... anyone got any ideas how the TV upstairs is getting it's signal ? And would he have used the same method to feed the other rooms (which don't seem to work) ? Or is he possibly using two different "loops" ? If he's using a distro box should this be easily visible ? and since the co-ax cables in the bedrooms go up to the ceiling is it safe to assume the box is in the loft ?

TIA for any help/comments.

Regards,

Adam Brunt

Well he could have used a distribution amplifier taken from the 2nd RF out of the sky box. It could also use the 9v(?) to drive the distribution amp, that's what we did at my parents.

As for not working maybe they are unplugged from the amp or maybe it's knackered...

Thanks for the reply.

Regarding the 2nd RF out from the Sky box .... that was 'done' by me or rather I found out be accident that somehow the lounge was connected to at least one of the bedrooms via a co-ax cable that goes off into the roof.

The other thing I possibly should mention - we have a Sky "magic eye" connected into the co-ax cable in the back of the bedroom TV. This basically lets you use a Sky remote upstairs too control the Sky box downstairs by sending IR codes "back" down the co-ax. Would this be possible if there was a distribution box in the 'middle' ?

Sounds like the connection from the lounge to the loft is actually to the bedroom. The other bedrooms probably go to the loft and are just sitting there. Can you get a TV reception in the other bedrooms?

Have checked over the cabling again and it does indeed seem that the lounge is connected directly to the bedroom that works fine.

The other two bedroom co-ax's go up into the loft (and possibly connect to the 2nd aerial under the roof). Pretty sure neither of these gets any TV reception but will double check during the day when the kid's aren't asleep ;)

Do you know if the guy you bought the house from had the whole house working or did he also buy it as you've now got it?

I've been looking into this for my own place and as far as I can tell, I need to get a powered amp thing (necessary if you want to run more than a couple of TVs off the same source) which needs to be situated as close to the aerial as possible.
In practical terms this means in the loft which will need a leccy to climb up there to install a 3 pin socket so I can plug one in. I'll then need to run coax cable from the box down to each room where needed.

It sounds like you might have the coax already in place and just need to sort out how to distribute the signal from within the loft.
