View Full Version : itunes - square symbol after artists name??
just imported some mp3's into itunes and a small square symbol is attached to all the groups names at the end of their name.
bit annoying as i have 2 lots of killers, etc instead of it all being under 1 band name.
any idea what it is and how i rectify it.
btw when i click it and 'get info' the symbol doesnt appear after the artists name???
cheers matt

In other programs, the square is sometimes just a blank space after a bit of text.

Select all the tracks by the Artist with the proper name, "Get Info" and copy the name to the clipboard - the select all the tracks by Artist[ ] - "Get Info" and paste the proper name back into the Artist name field.
cheers andy..trying to understand ur instructions. working on it.
il llet you know how i get on
ta
ok andy im struggling !!!
what i have for example under artist is bod dylan and under that bob dylan (with the annoying square after his name)
All the artists from the compilation have got this annoying sqaure after their name. Now i could go through all the artists and re - write their name under the 'get info' , this gets rid of the squrae. But what i was hoping to do is click on the album, and eradicate the square from all the artists in 1 fell swoop.
any ideas??
cheers

Ah - if it's a compilation then there's no choice but to do it one at a time.

Did you try selecting ALL the bob dylan tracks, go to 'get info' then tick the artist box next to where you type before getting rid of the square? It should save all the tracks with the new artist text then.
If you have a compilation then you'd have to click the 'artist' tab at the top of the column to arrange them into alphabetical order before doing the above. That or go through selecting each one with CTRL held down.
If you're worried about messing up your track order then copy the playlist somwhere else in iTunes before you start.

Usually the squark indicates eitehr a control charater or an undisplayable character. It's possible that mp3 tags have a limited charaters set and somehow an extra bit of data got appended which is undisplayable.
Might be an idea to get a batch tagger (something like mp3tagger) and try to recreate the tags. Would be quicker than using iTunes to do it..
