Would like On-Digital - ITV digital just for the free-to-air channels, but don't want to pay £169 for the annual sub (can do without the rest)

spoke to Customer Services, but they say that they only rent them while you're subscribing.

Anyone know where I can get the box, and if it would work without the card ?

After all, you can buy IDTVs and get the free channels without subscribing

And BTW who told the BBC they could use license-payers money to provide services that the payers can't watch ???

Sure you do mate;)

As far as I know you can't use a ITVdigital box without a card of some sort. Well mine doesn't anyway. You can pick up boxes from our very own General Classifieds or if you are flush then ebay has them as well. Avoid Nokia though...very nasty.

What search string should I use for Ebay ?
And I'll check out the general classifieds

Thanks

Mine works just fine without a card for the Free channels.

You CAN buy them retail - they cost about £350!!!.

I've read somewhere that sometime in the spring, they will start becoming available as retail items for about £120. Part of the govt's desire to switch off analogue or something.

I've read that some people have managed to negotiate rental of their existing boxes with just the free to air channels for £3pcm. Usually after they said 'come and take the box back', it must be said. :D May be worth asking, though.

I've also heard the rumour that several major home electronics manufacturers are planning on launching standalone digital set top boxes this year for around the £100 mark. If so, it may well be worth waiting for these.

Note that the BBC digital channels are free to UK licence payers; the BBC will arrange for you to receive the necessary card. There's some good info. at http://www.lpilsley.co.uk/skydigital.htm

They've scrapped the £3 a month for just free-to-air now - but not bothered to tell anyone. I changed onto this just before Christmas and am waiting for them to bump my direct debit up to £12 so I can ring and have a go at them!

[Ummm... being cautious, so as to avoid discussing potential illegal activities..]

I strongly suggest you treat the forum mentioned above with caution and scepticism. There are much better forums for discussing this topic, that aren't full of traders trying to make money off you... the Shack, for example.

When I try to access these forums I get the following message;

Warning: MySQL Connection Failed: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (61) in /usr/www/users/cdmax/forums/admin/db_mysql.php on line 40

Does anyone know what this means?

I was just having a look, and I wondered if there was a problem with the site or with my computer.

I don't think so, or if you do, it should come with the TV

Yes, you do.

Look at the BBC's digital pages. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/digital)

No, you don't.

The BBC website says this:

To watch free-to-view digital channels via satellite without subscribing ............

Note - "via satellite". This thread is about terrestrial DTV.
