I fancy getting a few budget pedals but would rather hear a load before narrowing down and going into a shop. Anyone know of anywhere I can get samples of effects (ideally with a clean sample of each to compare)? Samples would be better so I can play them on my stereo, though if there are any that have other audio streams I can still hear them, just not through such good speakers.

And if there isn't anywhere....why?! Th'internet should be ideal for things like that!

Thanks

Well, some manufacturers like Electro Harmonix have samples on the web - and on YouTube - but obviously the guitar and amp colour the end result

The Marshall site has demo samples of their pedals.

Cheers guys. Just had a quick look on the Marshall site but I'll have a wade through at the weekend. I'll look at the Electro Harmonix one again but I went straight to the Myscapce site and I always find Myspace pages such a mess (why do they always look such a state?!) so I'll try again.

I'm mainly into indie and classic (blues) rock sounds, so they're the sort of things I'm after, not metal or heavy rock sounds. Hendrix, Clapton, Pink Floyd, etc, late 80's like Pixies, Smiths, New Order, plus typical modern indie like Bloc Party, Kings of Leon, Cribs, Shins, stuff like that (in case that helps suggest any!)

Well, any web audio is going to be ropey at best. EHX site is ok - not seen their myspace site. There are good demos of EHX effects on Youtube which you can get a better feel from.

The best option is, obviously, to try them in a shop. EXH are good for the music you describe but are largely analogue so are a bit hissy.

The Holy Grail pedal is good for reverb. I also have a deluxe memory man which is the delay pedal used by the edge - it is good but limited compared to a digital delay. MXR make good compression pedals and I use an Ibanez tubescreamer which is a classic pedal. I also have Marshall distortion and chorus/phaser pedals which are good enough digital effects.

To be honest, unless you are really, really fussy about analogue over digital you are probably best served by getting a multi effect pedal board. I think line 6 have a new one out
