Black Hawk Down has now been rated 15 but on the TV ad next to the certificate it says 'contains frequent battle horror' (or something similar). Anybody know if the BBFC insisted on this before they would give a non 18 rating. Theres nothing on their web site. Similar thing happened with LOTR too.

I think this is a spin-off from the new BBFC guidelines – the 18 certificate was massively liberalised while younger age classifications were tightened up, and I suspect the increased information is a side-effect of this.

A key complaint of parents is that BBFC certificates weren’t particularly explicit about why a film was given a particular classification, and I think this is designed to remedy that.

Whats the bets that if this wasnt a big budget Bruckheimer flick it would have been rated 18. Typical BBFC pandering to the major players in Hollywood!

That's quite a good description of the film as its packed with two hours of solid battle horror. People getting blown in half, limbs getting shot off etc. Very good film though.

It seems to be a new initiative from the BBFC to try and give viewers more information about why the film has recieved its classification, and therefore allow them to make a better informed choice about whether the content is likely to spoil their enjoyment of the film. It was discussed in a recent interview by the head of BBFC in Sight and Sound magazine.
