Hi, I'm looking for a player which outputs a NTSC signal as Pal 50.
Why? My Sony Tele, which is 8 years old doesn't seem to like NTSC.

The picture seems to fade every 20 - 30 seconds when playing Region1 discs :( So, I need a player with a PAL 50 option.

Any recommendations? Advise please :)

I might be wrong, but I've always thought that setting any player to send an RGB signal fixes this.

RGB doesn't address the frame and line refresh issue which messes up some older TVs with NTSC sources.

However, the symptom described "picture seems to fade every 20 - 30 seconds" doesn't sound like an NTSC or 525/60 issue. Can you be more specific? How is DVD player connected up? If it is connected via a VCR rather than directly to the TV, what you are seeing may be Macrovision copy protection.

I'm going to re-check it tonight to make sure that I understand the problem. I'll be back with more details later :D

This is what's happening.

Rolling bands appear across the screen when viewing NTSC, usually when there is a panning scene or fast action. The Band are light grey. Makes no difference with connection; RGB, S-Video, Composite.
PAL is fine.

It always happens on the same scenes. Is it refresh rate?

LG and samsung players usually have pal 50, they do usually list this as a feature in instruction books, so try to make sure first.

As I recall the Wharefdale 750s does this as well...

Yep, correct about the good old Wharfedale 750/S which could do NTSC/PAL50/PAL60.

The £99 Dansai from Tescos does NTSC or PAL50 (no PAL60) and so do others from the current crop of budget <£100 players.

Best wishes

Difficult to be sure, but I'd guess that, given it is peculiar to NTSC sources, it probably does indicate an inability of your TV to handle such a signal.

I'm surprised, though. Every Sony I have had (including one bought in 1977) would give a stable image from a Pseudo PAL (ie PAL/525/60) source (although the 1977 one did compress the image vertically).

Maybe, after eight years, it's time to consider a new one. Have you already got a DVD player, or did you borrow one to try your TV out?

If you do have one, if it's a "good" one, then buying a cheapo one, just to get PAL50 may not be the best approach. "Cheapo" players are much more prone to suffer from odd problems with specific discs. For example, my Dansai (not my "main" player) won't properly play CDs where one track merges into the next; it always plays a short gap between them.

I'm surprised, too. This was a top Sony, bought in 1993. It accepts NTSC, maybe it's faulty. I'll try a VHS player and play a NTSC tape.

This is my Dad's tele, I was testing my Tosh 100 player on it.

...this is close to the problem with my Panasonic TV (a 5 year old TX25MD1) when viewing NTSC or Pal 60 via RGB (doesn't seem to affect it when playing NTSC from a VHS source).

Horizontal banding upon fast movement. Very strange :(
