I didn't like this new version, I thought it dragged too much, they have 2 extra stops after the Dolong bridge!
One is with the Playmates and the helicopter, while the other is at a French family. They also added extra footage the Kurtz compound sequence. These didn't add anything to the film.
There are some excellent shots that were added at the beginning.
I was very disappointed with new version, I'll stick with my Region 2 version which is one of my favourite films.
Longer doesn't necessarily mean better, but I did prefer the "Redux" cut to the original.
I liked the Playmates scene, as it showed amazing contrast from when they were on the stage. The French Plantation scene, however, didn't add anything - it made the film drag.
Also..
the relationship with the French girl was wrong
As I say though, I enjoyed it more than the original overall, and found it a more complete story.

My jury's still out on this as the original is my all time #1 film. On the whole I think I found the additional material did not detract from the original with the following exceptions:
1. The French Plantation Scene stopped the flow of the movie without really adding anything
2. Stealing the surfboard (as amusing as it was) nonetheless spoils one of the greatest closing lines to a scene ever ("One day this war's gonna end"). I know a lot of people treasure the surfboard stealing but give me the poignancy of the original anytime. That said the humour does deflate the puffed up posturing of Kilgore which can't be a bad thing.
I've seen Redux once and the original many many times so time will tell.
In the meantime I'm gonna' hold out for the R2 release or an inevitable Special Edition unless anyone can convince me to get the current R1 release.

Did nobody prefer this new version?
I thought the French Plantation scenes actually added a lot since they discussed some of the reasons why France fought for and then left Vietnam and why America was still idiotic enough to go to war ten years later. It was also well acted and powerful in my view so I was pleased to have it.
Otherwise I prefer the original cut, although the more of Brando's demented ramblings the better as far as I'm concerned.
Actually I like Redux better, I've watched it about three times already since getting it and I'm finding it better viewing each time, the new scenes add more to the film.
Is the R2 DVD still in Print? I'm looking to get the original version of the film as well, or should I hold out for special edition of the original version on R1 or R2?

I thought someone had stuck a Bertolucci film in the middle...
Well, I had only seen bits of the original theatrical version before going to see Redux (I'm only 17 :)), but the new scenes did stick out like a sore thumb. I think they were exceptionally well done, and the French plantation scene in particular was great in itself, but added little to the overall story.
I think I'll be buying Redux for the sake of having those extra scenes, which were still thoroughly enjoyable. Even at 3hrs 20 mins (or whatever its length is), the time flew by...

The Region 2 version is Out of Print. If you want the original version you'll have to buy the Region 1 version.
Unless you're lucky and find an obscure shop with it in stock. You could try a video hunt over at www.blackstar.co.uk
Hi,
I was lucky enough to get to see Ali and a Beautiful Mind while I was in New York and I enjoyed both but a Beautiful Mind stood out for me.
Russell Crowe plays a mathematical genius that suffers from schizophrenia. It tells the story of his life from when he started collage to when he wins the Nobel Prize. It is by far the best I have seen from Crowe above The Insider. It is a very well structured film and shows how scary it must be for a sufferer of this disease. It’s a must see when its released in Febuary.
Ali was pretty good too. The fight sequences were as close to the actual fights as I’ve seen. You feel like you’re in the ring getting hit by Foreman or whomever Ali is fighting at the time. Will Smith will also be pushing for the Oscar but I felt that if you don’t have an interest in boxing or Ali then you might find this is not the film for you. I enjoyed it for its honest view of Ali - warts and all.

Tyler, could you post separate reviews for those movies on the forums. Stuck in this thread nobody interested in them, and not interested in Apocalypse Now, will see your comments!
Redux" is the first time I have seen this film (as strange as that may sound) so I didn't know which were the added bits.
Now that I know that the "French Family" bit was newly added, I think that was wrong, the only part in the film that had me bored.
Excellent Film though:clap:
My vote would go for the 'Redux' version...
Since seeing the original when it was first released 'Apocalypse' has been in my top 5 films...
But the additional extra footage seems to split up the droning voice over... which to me was a little too prevalent in the original.
Cannot wait for Redux 2... as there is supposed to be hours more footage available !

I do think that the original is a lot more watchable, and i'm not sure if the film would have done as well if the redux version of the film had been released, but i wanted to see the extra footage out of curiosity. I was eager to see Brando in daylight most of all!!
I think the redux version is mainly for fans of the film to see new scenes and so I don't think its worth moaning about!
