What are peoples opinions on this?
I missed an item (graphic novel) that he was auctioning. It ended up finishing with no bids so the next day I messaged him asking if he was relisting it.
He said he had intended to but offered me a private sale instead.
He seems legit (has 57 100% positive feeback) but I'm aware that I won't have much cover if something goes wrong.
He wants payment by Paypal.
So what do you guys recon?

Can't you ask him to list it with a buy it now at a time agreed by the 2 of you? In fact I think the seller can put up an item that only you could bid on, better to be safe than sorry. I have mad purchases outside of the bay, but only when I knew it was also a store (i.e. goods from Hong Kong).
Yeah, get him to relist for you

Cheers guys.
I'll try to get him to add it as a buy-it-now at a set time - seems to be the safest option.

I think it can be listed, and the poster can set it so only you can bid on it.
Jeez, just do the sale outside of ebay, saves the seller his listing fees, you can always complain to paypal if it doesn't arrive anyway. eBay are hardly famous for fighting hard on the side of the buyer, are they?

How much are we talking about, if it's only around a tenner then I'd buy it privately no probs.

I'd buy it privately if it wasn't hugely valuable.
I have done this in the past as both a buyer and seller, as long as the its not so valuable like kingjames says. Saves a few pennies on the FVF i think.

thats what i have done a few times when someone has asked me to sell outside ebay. just relisted as a BIN and sent them the link. it doesn't show up in a main search for ages anyway.
going outside ebay would be against the T&C and can just lead to hassle when it goes wrong.

I've bought and sold stuff privately on many occasions with no problems whatsoever. eBay don't like it of course because they believe that every transaction in the world between individuals should be earning them money (see their latest tv ad). PayPal gives you more protection than eBay does (although it's the same thing in reality), so what's the problem?

So what? eBay just want money it's not like it's illegal to sell anything outside of eBay!
I would buy it outside of eBay it is only a graphic novel!

it would be against T&C if the original item was on ebay and thats where the seller saw it.
just like having a contract with an estate agent and then doing a deal without involving them.
but hey, do what you want OP, just because its not what your supposed to do doesn't mean you'd get caught.

Surely it's not quite the same? For example, ebay still get money even if you don't sell.

its the same as someone saying "hey, i'll buy your thing your selling, just stop the listing and sell it to my privately". its avoiding ebay final value fees is all. up to people if they want to do it or not.
Well I don't see a problem with it. I've lost count the number of times that a buyer has failed to pay for an item. I get my final valuation fees refunded but not the listing fee. When there are other bidders who turn down the 2nd chance offer, it means that I lose out.
Do ebay care?

To be fair CJ, its nothing like that, the listing came to an end naturally, nobody has ended the listing, its just finished without a buyer. Ebay has been paid for the service they supplied. Theres nothing in their T&C's to dictate what the seller has to do after a listing has finished without a sale.
