Just got this and on first listen... not that impressed. Although tbh it's been ages since I listened to Employment, so this might be a grower.

Sure to sell loads though regardless of quality.

Reviews seem to suggest it takes a few plays. The single took a few plays.

Amazing that it took so long to get out there.

I really, really don't like this...and I liked the last one.

Ruby makes me want to smack my head violently with my fists in a slightly deranged fashion - and 40 year old blokes singing along to it in the workplace, is not helping it's chances either.

Doesn't help that the rest of the tracks sound the same.

The SHowaddywaddy revival starts here

Andy

You mean you REALLY, REALLY, REALLY don't like it?

I don't like the single much either... but willing to give the album a few more listens.

I've only heard thw new stuff in a live setting so can't really comment on the actual album yet but I can say it has the worst cover I have seen a very long time

Kasier Chiefs... I don't know why they irritate me, but they really do... Not as much as Gwen Stefani mind.

It's a bad cover but the hours skull cd cover takes some beating.

I know it's very naughty... but even on second listen I'm glad I haven't paid good money for this.

I mentioned on here ages ago that the Kaisers would go by the wayside of bad 2nd album syndrome like Franz Ferdinand / The Darkness etc. and I got shouted down.

Haven't heard it as yet but looking at the average reviews and comments here it sounds like I could be right.

Shame there aren't many decent bands around anymore that would actually make me want to go and see them live. Used to go to about 3 gifs a week in the Britpop heyday. Last band I saw was Snow Patrol who bored the pants off me. Dreadful.

High hopes for The Twang, lets hope they fulfil their potential and The Gossip's album is pretty good so far (on iPod at the mo).

Mr Majestik

Well the Gossip are on thier 3rd album...

(I'd still argue the Franz album wasn't bad.)

Agreed about Franz and as for seeing Snow Patrol well there really is no valid reason for paying good money to see those bunch of dullards.

Whatever the quality of the new Chiefs album they put on a damn fine live show.

The first album wasn't great either. Ace singles and great live though.

Hadn't realised that, will have to dig them out. Nice one.

If the Killers's debut hadn't been so good they'd be sinking into obscurity following their 2nd album which was very poor in comparison. Hot Fuss and their excellent live shows (could do with more crowd interaction though) should carry them through though.

The thing that put me off the Kaisers was the fact they were well and truly overplayed on the radio and whenever they were shown on festival coverage it was always the same 3 songs. Just got bored of them very quickly TBH.

I think we are working from differnet perspectives as the Killers were one of the dullest live bands I have seen in a very long time.

That's hardly their fault. Saw them live proper and didn't really expect a great deal but they were a highlight of Glastonbury 2005.

When is this album out..?
I quite enjoyed Employment and wasn't sure if their 2nd album would be anywhere near as good. By your posts, it looks like I might be right. Looking forward to listening to it though. I would ask where you have all heard it but I won't. ;)

GregB

Haven't The Gossip done five albums now? I've only heard Kaiser Chiefs new stuff live but it sounded good, better than their first which i'm not that much of a fan of.

Mr Majestik
22-02-2007, 18:55
A quick google and yes the Gossip have five albums out.

Only heard two and personally i'd say they've only got one decent song. And that's getting really over played, been hearing it none stop for a year now.

Back to the Kaisers...

First listen. Sounds alright to me.
More of the same but a bit louder.

Jez
23-02-2007, 00:39
Sounds ok to me, no better or worse than Employment.

Seems its easier to jump on the second album is automatically bad route, when its a grower like the Killers second.

I am not a big Keiser's fan but seems a pretty much harmless and enjoyable listen.

Very much a grower.

The Kaiser's records certainly improveing on further listens.

Heard an interview with them today on the radio and they sound like top blokes, so I'll have no problem with it selling ****loads, but it's not for me - it's not offensive, just doesn't tickle me in those parts.

Kudos for trying with the beards though.

My wife's friend just went to Manchester to see them. All that travel end expense and they only played for 75 minutes.

That's very poor

Oh, and they record's crap too!

saw them last night in wolverhampton (£26 a ticket) played for just over an hour and were truly truly shocking, without doubt the worst live band i've seen in the last few years. was a good example of never tour an album that folk don't know yet as well, huge lulls when new material was played. Even the singles lacked any kind of punch, just looked and sounded like they were going through the motions.

i predict we won't be seeing a lot of these fellas soon. the whole evening had a 'darkness' feel to it.

DM
24-02-2007, 13:18
They shouldn't play the new stuff because the fans don't know it? How are they supposed to promote any new material? All bands have done this since the day 0.

you miss the point completely, you tour an album after it is has been out for a while and the fan base knows the tracks, no-one minds hearing new stuff but when the band make sing along music like the kaisers it helps to know the songs.

Still, doesn't take away from the fact it was a shocking show, old or new songs.

Fans appreciate new material.. I always have done when going to gigs

Especially an album like employment that's been played to death.

LouBarlow
24-02-2007, 18:10
I think a lot of bands hone and refine new material by playing them live - certainly Radiohead play songs from their next album, and they always (usually) end up sounding different when it finally comes out.

A lot of bands likewise.

Picked the album up today, given a listen. Thinks its pretty good, nothing as immediate as Riot, but thats not a criticism.

Or if you're Radiohead you play songs from three albums down the line. :D My friend's pretty sure they played one of the Amnesiac tracks (in one form) at a gig in 1996, and they were certainly playing Motion Picture Soundtrack prior to OKC, and similar.

Actually my main issue with Kid A is how much better it clearly sounded live and how the album lacked that refinement.

Kaiser Chiefs remain the only band to be overplayed on the radio who don't annoy me. This album is solid, at times very good, but obviously nobody who wants to retain any credibility is ever going to want to admit thinking this. A lot of the current crop of bands (in fact, nearly all) have fallen foul of the old difficult second album syndrome, but the Kaisers have had no such problems.

LouBarlow
26-02-2007, 18:05
Jesus, when will people get over this 'fashion' thing? - it has nothing to do with credibility, it is all about the music and beards.

Well, we might not agree on football (Pires the dirty diver :D ) but we can agree to go against the flow and admit to liking the new Kaiser's album!

I was drawn in by the single and have thoroughly enjoyed both listens I've managed so far.

After thinking I would dislike this, on 2nd listen it's pretty good. Not as many 'gimmicky' songs as the debut which is a good thing. Very mid 90's Britpop which is right up my street.

On further reflection it's the new Menswear album

I was trying to think what this reminded me off. Track 4 - Highroyds or something or other, is pure Menswear.

I rather liked Menwear though and the album is starting to grow on me.

Wot he said.

I was giving this album a wide berth as i've had it up to here with 'Rooooby, rooby, roobeh!!!!!!' but that song aside, oh and Boxer Champ which is a bit naff, it's a solid enough follow up album and one that i thought was pretty catchy on first listen.
