Other alternatives worth looking at are the Pioneer DV696 (around £150, think it was on off at about £100 in RicherSounds) or at around £190 is the Oppo 981 widley regarded as one of the best upscaling players
I would have a read over at avforums for more details
I was just about to post a similar question  .
I have just purchased the Panny TH42PX60 HD TV and was considering complimenting it with an upscaling dvd player.
My budget is £100 and the Pioneer DV 696 looked about the best when sifting through reviews. I'm sure its a few quid more than the price posted above at Richersounds, i found it for £110 elsewhere. I enquired availability at a few distributors and a couple of them said they would not be stocking it as it is now discontinued  . Is this true ? No mention of this on the Pioneer website.
Will also check the Sony NS96 as didnt consider this one.
Play.com are currently doing 1.2m Linx HDMi leads for £7.99.
Can anyone comment on the Pioneer player or recommend any others ?
I'll check back with interest, cheers  .
I use a Denon 1730 with my 42" Panny, and the picture it gives out is fantastic!!
Another vote for Oppo 981
Just installed mine and i am amazed at the quality & plays everything you throw at it.
Also comes with a HDMI cable but can cost as much as £180 Including Customs But well worth it.

I have no direct experience, and I'm keeping an eye open for a potential candidate (though I do not have an HD ready screen as yet).
On the AVForums site I keep reading decent things about the Panasonic S52.
The Philips DVP 5960 is a good choice, very good community firmware updates.

All all dvd players mentioned here are region free too?
Any more votes for the Pioneer DV 696 ?
i thought id made my mind up to go for the Pioneer for £109 del,
but i'm tempted with the Oppo 981 too (where is the best place to purchase from and is this multi-region and PAL compatible ?)
Might have to check out the Panasonic S52 if thats also getting good reviews.
I'm connecting to a Panny TH42PX60 plasma if anyone can offer any recommendations or advice.

Interesting - The CRT web site says that this player is universal, but no mention of whether that includes DVD-RAM disks. Can anyone confirm?

I just brought a Wharfedale DVD320HDMI only available at Argos and you also save £5 on a HDMI lead when brought with this player. Book price was £49.99 and then the lead at £15, But when i got to the till it ringed in at £39.99 so for £54.98 i got a steal, Plugged it in and on the remote hit the HDMI button till i got to 1080i and wow.
I know its not a dear player but on my Samsung 32" R74 mind blowing on Lord of the rings. If your not bothered about losing DIVX like I'm not as i hook my lappy up via VGA, then this player is for you. Page 365 2nd down on the right in the new Argos book.
Does the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive upscale ?
