Star Trek fans clamoring for DVDs in complete season box sets will soon have their wish come true. On March 26, Paramount Home Entertainment will launch their foray into the world of Star Trek: The Next Generation on DVD with the Season One box set, complete with the extras that make DVDs the hottest format for home viewing today.

Paramount Home Entertainment will kick off a year-long release campaign with a seven-disc collector's box set containing all 26 episodes from the first season, along with four newly created documentaries exclusive to the DVD release. A new season will be released every other month and the entire series is presented in newly remixed Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround.

Each season of TNG will be presented in a highly collectable box set, with seven discs and a pull-out booklet of episode information and a panoramic montage of the crew (Season 2 will have only six discs due to the abbreviated season of 22 episodes versus 26). The seven box sets will create an attractive library of the entire series.

"Star Trek is one of our most popular and enduring video franchises," said Eric Doctorow, president, Paramount Home Entertainment Worldwide. "We are very excited to be releasing Star Trek: The Next Generation on DVD because we are now offering consumers the ultimate home viewing experience for this immensely popular show."

The contents of the Season One box set are as follows:

Disc 1: Encounter at Farpoint Parts 1 & 2 (episodes 101, 102), The Naked Now (103), Code of Honor (104)

Disc 2: The Last Outpost (107), Where No One Has Gone Before (106), Lonely Among Us (108), Justice (109)

Disc 3: The Battle (110), Hide and Q (111), Haven (105), The Big Goodbye (113)

Disc 4: DataLore (114), Angel One (115), 11001001 (116), Too Short a Season (112)

Disc 5: When the Bough Breaks (118), Home Soil (117), Coming of Age (119), Heart of Glory (120)

Disc 6: The Arsenal of Freedom (121), Symbiosis (123), Skin of Evil (122), We'll Always Have Paris (124)

Disc 7: Conspiracy (125), The Neutral Zone (126), Special Features

Disc 7 includes the following special features:

— The Beginning: focusing on the challenges of creating a new series and keeping to Gene Roddenberry's vision. Includes interviews with Roddenberry, Patrick Stewart, Robert Justman (former producer of the Original Series), Rick Berman (Co-Executive Producer at the time), Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Denise Crosby and other cast members.

— Selected Crew Analysis: features first-season cast members talking about their roles, their acting backgrounds prior to being cast and their impressions of the Star Trek legacy. Also features a comparison between the launch of the series in 1987 and the comments from the cast seven years later (1994), using archive interviews and b-roll to present a fascinating "before-and-after" look from the series cast members.

— The Making of a Legend: features commentary from the first-season production staff members — Michael Westmore (Make-up), Herman Zimmerman (Production Designer), Mike Okuda (Scenic Artist), Richard Stembach (Scenic Artist), Dan Curry (Visual Effects), Peter Lauritson (Co-Producer), Rick Berman and others — as they discuss the making of the new series. Uncovers information on how the beaming effect is achieved, Worf's make up process and how much time and effort goes into creating each episode.

— Memorable Missions: cast and crew discussions of specific episodes and events that occurred during the first season.

The DVD of Star Trek: The Next Generation – Season One is presented in a full-frame version, and the audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo. The DVDs are subtitled in English and closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired.

The Season One box set carries no suggested retail price but is expected to be priced by retailers for their customers at under $100. It is not rated in the U.S. by the Motion Picture Association of America; it is, however, rated G in Canada. Each disc has a running time of approximately 176 minutes, with the exception of Disc 7, which has 88 minutes of features and approximately 60 minutes of special features. All seven discs are encoded with the Macrovision™ AntiCopy process. The above information pertains to the North American release only.

From what I can see in the illustrations I prefer the R2 ones. But the big question has to be; what region has more extras or are they going to be identical. Guess we will have to wait until Paramount finally anounce the release of the box sets.

R2 for me. That R1 packaging is pretty blah.

It will come down to pricing for me. I have the R2's on pre-order (£59 each shipped to Australia) at the moment but they may change once the prices start appearing for R1.

Jimmy, where have you found them at that price?

Probably at AmazonUK as they remove the VAT for people outside Europe.

raised before I know, but is it worth considering whether the cuts in the episode 'Conspiracy' will remain in the DVD version? If so, R1 might be the choice, but I agree that their packaging is no way as sexy as ours!

I remember the big broo-ha-ha (sp.?) over the cuts to Conspiracy and it'll be good to know whether they've been re-submitted uncut.......

The video release of "Conspiracy" was uncut, so I would imagine that the DVD's would be the same. It was the BBC that shredded that episode. Don't know if Sky have shown it uncut or not.

oh yeah that's right - sorry, it was quite some time ago now!

Yurgh. R1 packaging is ugly as all heck, but at under $100 a season = £70 retail, there's a fighting chance it's going to come out a fair bit cheaper than the R2 copies... so it's either pay a vast amount more over the 14 months for nice packaging, have the NTSC versions but with ugly packaging... decisions, decisions, decisions...

I have ordered the R2 at amazon.co.uk at £72. But it may change.

One of the most important things to think about is that packaging. It is quite hard to see how exactly how the R1 packaging looks like.

I want the version which keeps the discs in a scratch free/easy to get out case. I dom't want another Buffy situation.

I will get what version has the best for the discs. Although it depens on the price as well.

The packaging looks pretty for both R1 and R2 but are they practical? I still prefer it if all companies would use amaray's for all DVD's.

jonathan.e is correct :)

The price once the VAT is removed was around £64 shipped and I had 2 £5GC I used for each pre-order

I think I will stick with the region 2 version I have on order from Amazon, is any one else surprised to find Amazon are cheaper than Play for these box sets?

I don't think (I may be wrong) that the Play price currently is their "final offer" so to speak - look at Robocop... started off at near RRP and then dropped quite substantially when everyone else had announced their prices. Bear in mind that £76 is the price without VAT of the Retail Price (£90) - so y'know... they can do better than they are doing, I would think.

They haven't got an R1 price, though, yet... that might be good, in the same way as Simpsons R1/R2.

We have had the 'offical' Region1 announcement, does anyone know when Paramount are going to release the Region 2 details ?
Its got to be pretty soon I would have thought.

I think the R1 packaging looks good and eminently more practical than the R2 boxsets. No point in having pretty packaging if it isn't completely up to the job of protecting the disc(s), e.g. Stargate SE - pyramid edition.

DVD-Debate have this picture of the actual UK plastic case (not computer generated image like the others). see: http://www.w2designs.plus.com/Pics/uktng.jpg

Still looks pretty impressive though the storage case ain't as shiny! :( :D

Just been studying the ST:TNG Ep listing here (http://www.startrek.com/library/episodes_tng.asp) and I think I will start purchasing from Season 3 anyway - so many classic episodes from S3 onwards when looking through the listing!

You and me both, although having said that if Season 1 and 2 reach a more sensible price I'll buy them, but I will not be rushing to pre-order.
