I'm thinking of starting up a little E-Bay shop, but I've heard a few fair bad things about PayPal. The idea of buyers being able to do chargebacks at the drop of a hat doesn't appeal to me either. I've currently got a NoChex account, and I was wondering if that's the second most widely payment system after PayPal. And if not, what is? There are quite a few that E-Bay apparently lets you use such as BidPay and Moneybookers but I'm not sure which it's worth going for.

I'd normally stick with just taking cheque and postal order but I'd imagine some people don't bid on auctions that don't take PayPal or a similar systems. Plus, instant payments would make things a fair bit easier.

The ones you have mentioned are all the main ones, however if it is a shop you are opening you are cutting out a fairly large amount of customers by not taking Paypal

I'm not disagreeing with you over their poor service but if you want the shop to be a success you may have no choice......maybe offering more than one with a small discount on the altenatives would be an option...although most folk don't like payiing extra to use Paypal.

I don't think you're allowed to charge extra for PayPal.

A common alternative is WorldPay which would allow you to take credit cards.

Paypal is indeed a terrible company. I only gave in and started accepting it again last December and sales shot up dramatically. So I'm sticking with it, prepared for a bit of grief here and there.

I know PayPal can freeze your account, but can they draw money from your bank account without permission? What worries me about PayPal as well is the way they ask for your actual bank account details rather than a debt card.

I think Paypal is Safe and you should not worry about providing them with your bank details. I have used Paypal for over 4 years. Never had an issue. And also ebay and Paypal are actually the same company
the customer base you could get by using paypal is more than you would get by using its rivals like nochex etc. - GOOD LUCK

Nevertheless I do wish their fee charges were a bit less

> can they draw money from your bank account

I think they can for chargebacks where there are insufficient funds in the Paypal account.
