Jesus. And I thought today couldn't get any worse..... :oh-hum:
Hopefully this'll be a hoax like Roger Waters
Is Roger Waters a hoax then? He certainly had me fooled!
Is there really a sizeable audience for this though?
I honestly can't see who (other than the media) is actually waiting for this to happen.
Take That worked primarily because their tour dates attracted the 'Hen Night' crowd of groups of 20/30 something women who still want to scream at blokes. But those kids who were Spice Fans 10 years ago are going to be a lot less keen to revisit that experience now.
The 'Girl Power' moment passed by us a long time ago, and I don't think it'll ever be back.
The All Saints reunion seems to have died on its arse and I suspect this may go a similar way - albeit with a bigger initial level of media interest.

The Spice Girls were hugely influential and surely a respected pop act?
Why the hate?
The Spice Girls phenomena was one of the most interesting musical parts of the 90's.
With great ballads and amazing throwaway pop singles the band may not have been hip to like but my 90's would have been a far duller place without them.
I'd take their output over grunge and Brit Pop any day!
You couldn't buy Nirvana chocolate for a start!!
Read David Sinclair's excellent book "Wannabe- How the Spice Girls reinvented pop fame" if you want to know more about the fab 5.
I'm not sure about the reunion but at least it will give people an opportunity to revist their classic hits.
For Bonos red charity and then tour in the Autumn.

Although reports this morning suggest that Boyzone are actually reuniting for exactly the same events.
Coincidence? Or confusion?

I just cannot understand the vitriol from some people in this thread.
Hopefully will be about as successful as the All Saints reunion... Big Fanfare for new album stating how they're all mates really. First single does well...then nothing, soon to be dropped by the label :)
Granted they released some quality pop records but lets not forget when they believed they're own hype and went 'serious' for the last album...shortly before the breakup

First album sold 3million copies in the UK - third sold less than 0.3 million.
The Spice Girls obviously saw how much money Take That got from reforming and the touring and thought to themselves were a bit skint (Except for Posh cos she's living off David's income!) and thought Take That made a load of money we should too!!!!!
And it looks like Emma Bunton's new single is going to struggle to even get anywhere near the Top 50 this week and she was the last member left with any sort of solo career going (in this country at least, as I think Mel C is still doing OK in parts of Europe).
To be fair I dont think money comes into it. Granted I'm sure promoters will be falling over themselves to get the cheque books out, but I cant see thats why they'd do it...More of a way of either re-promoting their next solo albums or getting them back into Hello magazine

this was the bunch who helped launch "girl power" on the world, feminism light that can be sold on a tshirt on a merchandising stand and had such heavyweight pundits as Richard and Judy referring to it with reverence :cuckoo:
Read David Sinclair's excellent book "Wannabe- How the Spice Girls reinvented pop fame" if you want to know more about the fab 5.
surely it's just the fab 2 (at a push) because Geri and Mel C are the only ones who came close to solo success.
We'll Geri had 3 number 1 singles so she's the best solo star out of the 5.

Why the hate?
Because they suck! Sugababes, All Saints, even Girls Aloud (now) are respected pop acts. The Spice Girls stuff was bad at the time and hasn't got any better with time. I'd argue that the success (or not) of most pop acts is down to picking good producers, ones that can add an exciting, modern sheen to the songs, and I don't think The Spice Girls had that...
Respected by who? The cool kids? That discounts you JV cause nobody says 'suck' anymore. :p

And who from Nirvana's demographic would by Kurt Cobain chocolate? The spice girls were a merchandising companies wet dream (As well as men at the time). The music was shockingly bad, directed at parent’s wallets, they were totty and would have gone the same way as previous Girl groups if it wasn't for the rise of the 'celeb' magazines.
Nirvana and other 'alternate' music from the era have stood up to still be critically lauded, whilst the Spice Girls just gets derision.
I can't believe you used branded chcolate to highlight how acclaimed a music act was.
they were totty and would have gone the same way as previous Girl groups if it wasn't for the rise of the 'celeb' magazines.Totally disingenuous and also untrue. They obviously had something (as a 5 piece) that was very special otherwise it would've been impossible to take over the ENTIRE world like they did! They had that magic X factor that can't be bought, they caught the wave at just the right moment and laughed all the way to the bank.
Spice Girls was and is fantastic POP music. It's certainly of it's time but to disregard it outright is completely misguided.
Nice to see the music nazis out in full force today though! :p
So when do Steps and SClub7 reform?
In light of recent events, I'd say the best you can hope for is S Club 6
I was going to say that but didn't want to fan the flames! :D
It'll probably just be plain S Club anyway (as they were after whatshisface left).

Spice Girls music only gets deride by people who think their type of music is better.
I mentioned chocolate because one of the main reasons I love the whole Spice Girl phenomena is the fact that you couldn't move for Spice related items. The camera's and spray to mention two of their most succesful.
add the lolipops, books, bins, bedspreads, dolls etc,etc and it was a multi million industry.
As richie said, they had some sort of magic that came together when the time was just right for them. The buzz that followed the band for a couple of years hasn't been equaled since.
...you couldn't move for Spice related items. The camera's and spray to mention two of their most succesful.

And the music??
But seriously, that's precisely why I fear that a reunion may not be as popular as people assume. The young kids that bought into that whole 'Spice' thing have now grown up and probably aren't all that interested in revisiting it in their 20s.
Take That disappeared from the limelight and remained largely popular (Mark Owen won Big Brother didn't he?) whereas the Spice Girls have never really gone away and the public couldn't wait to get Emma Bunton off Strictly Come Dancing.

Sorry Lorne.t but that is just soooo wrong! You cant praise a band because of the way they so unashamedly milk their fans for all their worth surely ?

I don't consider myself a music nazi. :D Steps scored loads of number ones, but does that make them automatically "good"? ;) On the other hand, a lot of fine music goes virtually undiscovered. Of course, it's all a matter of opinion, but sales figures are IMO never a mark of quality, or at least they don't impress me much.
If you want a decent 90s pop group, go listen to Saint Etienne... loads better than The Spice Girls (though we've had this discussion before), and it's easy to rationalise: better songs, better production, etc. "Wannabe" is barely a step up from that m-na m-na song (can't remember what girl band did it ;) ).

I'm not.
What I'm saying is the whole thing about the Spice Girls was it was about far more than just the music. It was amazing to see a group of performers coming from nothing to achieving world domination in under two years.

You can discuss it as much as you like, but only one of those acts will be remebered in 20 years time, and it ain't SE.
To achieve mass-market appeal in the music industry, is as impressive a feat as a band producing a technically stupendous, critically acclaimed album...the winner is those who can do both, but then they typically disappear up their own a-holes, or the die-hards desert them, as it isn't considered 'cool' to like a successful, multi-million selling artiste/act is it?

I gave up caring who's where in the hit parade ages ago. I'm mental, me. ;)
It has very little to do with chart performance from 10 years ago! The fact is, a decade on, you "Spice Girls" and EVERYONE knows who and what they were and can no doubt name them etc.

Spice Girls music only gets deride by people who think their type of music is better.
Sorry, this is closer to "Spice Girls music only gets derided by people who think any type of music is better."
I haven't really have a type of music since I was 17, I like all sorts, but still think the Spice Girls are crap. I even like the Sugarbabes and have even seen them live. I've also seen Girls Aloud live and think they were a bit poo, but kinda liked their first song, mainly because of Nicola, the dirty strumpet.
The Spice Girls were a product, they were printed on everything because of the power of men in suits. A brand does not equal talent. Sure you could say they were a phenomena, but not due to their music, but because of their exposure.

Remembered and classified as cheese as are a lot of the 80s pop acts
As to Nirvana their tshirts are still selling long after Kurt died and being worn by kids who may not have been alive at the time which can't be said of spice girl tshirts
But there would have been no exposure without a few decent tunes! I still remember how shocked all the music toffs were when "Say you'll be there" was played for the first time on the radio. They couldn't believe that the act they dismissed as a one hit wonder could follow up with something equally catchy and with a tiny bit of soul!
Anyway this is yet again a pointless argument. It matters not what anyone here actually thinks about the music or about the people involved, history is the only thing that'll ultimately remember.

IMO, debatable. They were simply there at the right time. The whole 'Girl Power' thing was (possibly) fuelled by them. They said, "look at us, we can jump around and be obnoxious, because we are girls, and we have the right to." and all the teenyboppers went "This is so me!" and bought into it.
Well tell that to Shampoo who did the same thing! One act had decent pop music, one was only big in Japan (coz they'll buy anything).

"I'll tell you what I want, what I really really want.
So tell me what you want, what you really really want.
I wanna, i wanna, i wanna, i wanna, i wanna really, really, really, really zig a zig ahhhh..."
