I know it’s a bit of an ambiguous title but I’m off to Hong Kong this Friday evening and was wondering if there were any recent good titles worth getting.

The last few DVD’s I ordered from www.dddhouse.com were:

Battle Royale
Audition
Bullet in the Head
God of the Gamblers

I’m not to bothered about getting that many martial Arts films as the other half dreads them. She only tends to watch anything with Andy Lau or Leslie Chung in.

are you or the other half into hk comedy? you can try Love on a Diet (http://www.hkmdb.com/db/movies/view.mhtml?id=9425&display_set=eng) (summer 2001) with Andy Lau

If you don't already have it, then I would heartily recommend Shaolin Soccer - an excellent comedy with fine production values. There are also three good CGI action movies which you may already be aware of: Storm Riders, A Man Called Hero, and The Duel.

Other than those the other titles I would recommend are not HK films but are available at a good price in that region... they are:

Inugami (Japan)
St Johns Wort (Japan)
Space Travelers (Japan)
The Goddess of 1967 (Australia - directed by Carla Lau, a HK expatriate... or so I believe)
Shiri (Korea)
Series 7 - the Contenders(USA)

Hope this helps.

regards, Tim...

Decent films really m8.

One of the (er's) favourites of last year was ' Fly me to polaries' and 'I hate you so'

She tends to buy most of the girly stuff on VCD anyway.

She did enjoy Tokyo raiders, purple storm and Space travelers which I found rather strange.

kcxdev - She does like HK comedy so we're give 'love on a diet' ago. She's not to keen on Stephen Chau though. He was pretty funny in ' form Bejing with Love' a spoof spy comedy.

if she likes 'and I hate you so' I would also take a look at 'lavender' and 'anna magdalena' (http://www.hkdvdheaven.co.uk/AnnaMagdalena.htm) . both star kelly chen (magdelena also has Aaron Kwok who was in 'and I hate you so') and has her usual slightly 'abstract' and 'eccentric' love story feel about it.

all these can be found quite cheap, was about hk$69 or less when I was there in sept/oct.

Fly me to polaries had me in tears big time first time I watched it :)

But recommendations for the newer comedies:
La Brassiere (http://pub5.ezboard.com/fhongkongdvdsreviews.showMessage?topicID=1066.topic) My recommendation
Dummy Mummy without a Baby (http://pub5.ezboard.com/fhongkongdvdsreviews.showMessage?topicID=1059.topic) someone elses recommendation
Funeral March (http://pub5.ezboard.com/fhongkongdvdsreviews.showMessage?topicID=990.topic) My recommendation

All these could be what your other half may be after... wait. Also get her the Andy Lau 2001 Fiesta Concert (either kareoke or DTS version).

You know, I'm not sure whether to start a new topic about this - but here goes.

What type of HK film would anyone recommend to a first time viewer (namely me :D)?

Any particular titles which could be of interest?
